How often are you seeing the 4.4 engines having their timing chain guides explode? Was it only that one E53 you worked on in the past? If not, around how many miles does it happen?
@NathansBMWWorkshop7 жыл бұрын
Well they will start making noise at cold start, if you keep driving it it will eat into the aluminum part of the guide and eventualy break the chain, also the cheap timing tools is what the problem with the timing over advanced codes, I need to make a video on that too
@atrain1326 жыл бұрын
Nathan's DIY Garage Garage new subscriber here man! Awesome, informative videos. Did you ever make a video on the Cheap Timing Tools? I recently looked at a 2001 740i sport with a P0011 code, over advanced. The guy said he just had an independent shop replace the timing chain guides. However, that code is popping up, and I heard a light knocking / ticking sound on front drivers side of the engine. Does that possibly sound like a tale tell sign of cheap tools used?
@andys32756 жыл бұрын
The timing chain guides on the 4.4 are very common to go, they used the same engine in early l322 range rovers as well. The problem mostly is that people use cheap oil and long oil change intervals which clogs the oil passages in the guides and causes the plastic to break off. I have done a bunch of these.if the engine was maintained with synthetic oil and normal change intervals, it will survive.

Hey Nathan, Great video, I love that you made a video on what to look for before buying a BMW X5. I bought my 2003 BMW X5 3.0L L6 about a month ago. Wish there was a video like this for me to see. My X5 was leaking oil, which was all gathered in the pan at the bottom where I didn't see it. I drove it for like a day before the service engine light came on. Turns out, both catalytic converters went bad as well as their oxygen sensors. Hopefully this video could help many others not get scammed like I did. One small detail I wish you included was the windshield water pumps and the windshield wipers, both front and back of the car. The X5 has that HUGE windshield fluid container with the two windshield water pumps behind it. Both of mines weren't working, so I had to replace it. For some reason, the light on the dashboard is telling me that the there's something going on with the windshield water pumps even though they work perfectly. I'm not sure if I have to clear the lights or what. Also, my airbag light is on. Anyways, great video, hope many others see it. Keep it the great work Nathan. I just subscribed. Tommy

Crankcase ventilation diaphragm will crumble and cause severe white smoke condition similar to head gasket failure. The transfer case chain will stretch and slip, causing a loud clack clack as if a chain is slipping on the gear. The engine timing chain guides will fail and crumble into the oil pan causing slack in chain causing an out of time event where valves will slap the Pistons this is often the death of the X5 as it it very expensive to fix. Also water pump fails, radiator corrodes,

Hey Nathan, fellow e53 and sequoia lover here, got a question: on one of my e53s (facelifted/late years), I'm having intermittent AC issues, it's a 3.0 though not a v8, could this be related to the AC condenser fan not working? The AC works fine after running a while/driving it, but on startup at times it appears that the system won't kick on the compressor until driven a bit. It seems like the compressor and refrig levels are fine bc once it gets on it is ice cold. Only things I can think of are relay or climate control CPU, the fan is bad, or low freon or bad pressure switch...seems like the fan might be the number 1 culprit even on a 3.0/m54, is this right??? Thx!

Oh makes sense cause I found a super clean 2009 for 2500$
@JeffreyJamesLippold4 жыл бұрын
I think that really depends on the maintenance, changing your vanos is a lot easier than the alternative in other engines, and Never had a timing chain issue in mine, 275k and still runs like brand new. But then again I do all the maintenance and regularly inspect mine for issues before there is a problem and I can tell you yes 1) yes the maintenance is time consuming so if you are not a mechanic then expect to drop 10k in maintenance as the mechanic legitimately has to put in about 40 hours of work to change all the gaskets ie valve, timing chain cover, upper and lower oil pan, alternator bracket, and transmission pan gaskets which probably should be changed every 120k or every 5-10 years which really isn’t that frequent when you think about it. Also if it leaks, oil or coolant that is not “normal”. It means you have a problem that means you need to have it fixed before it becomes a problem. German engines are made to run “perfect”. Not “oh there is a little sound here or little leak here or this light goes on but it’s okay” no it isn’t okay that means there is a problem that needs to be addressed. But let me tell you my 2004 X5 runs exactly the same as when it was new,, and have never replaced anything other than regular maintenance items. The only other car, besides this one, I have ever owned that never had a mechanical failure was an Acura legend win a 3.2 v-tech engine, now that car was almost maintenance free. Pros-This suv will out perform most SUV’s on and off road( I have taken this x5 up mountains through creek beds and windy muddy dirt roads on hilly ledges where traction is critical and this suv has outperformed most trucks and jeeps I have taken through the same terrain, and with proper maintenance runs like new.Cons- gas mileage is awful, it’s a heavy suv for its size and it really eats gas, The maintenance is very labor intensive which if your a mechanic means several weekends working on your vehicle, if you aren’t a mechanic then A). You better become one fast (This suv will require 1) a hydraulic floor jack, 2) 3 ton plus jack stands (I use 6 ton) jack stands 3) besides standard sockets (a set that has 16mm as you will need that). E torx sockets and torx sockets, 4)an engine support beam.(you will need to either Jack the engine up and hang it from support beam (Harbor freight 100 bucks it’s a little short for x5 but don’t panic it still supports the weight fine) 5) you will need a 1/2 or preferably a 3/4 inch breaker bar, if you can’t find e sockets in 1/2 or 3/4 inch then use a impact wrench extension set that drops from 1/2 o r 3/4 to 3/8. Must be an impact wrench extension as you will snap the others in half trying to take the 6 frame bolts off the sub frame (. I snapped 2 extensions and a 3/8 breaker bar). Also you will need a breaker bar extender which is essentially a long metal pipe. I took the steel pipe off my jack but was a bit too heavy but still worked fine. or be prepared to drop at least $10k, at a reputable BMW mechanic, (warning do not use a mechanic that does not work on bmws as neither of you will be happy...lol) into a vehicle you bought for $5k. Which is actually a bargain considering it was probably $55-80k. New. Anyways my bottom line is if you don’t want to perform heavy labor hour maintenance then don’t buy a bmw. But if you love the performance and don’t mind some long hard work in your garage then absolutely buy this vehicle as it truly drives amazing.

first unhook the battery and touch the cables together to reset , if that does not work check the fluid level, if that dont work replace the solenoids in the trans, they are common for doing that in the gm trans which your x5 has

Amazing..on such an expensive car, the door handles are so cheaply made-weird. Why so much plastic?
@mmartin0306 жыл бұрын
Lol had my X5 for 2 years and have put 3 handles on the drivers side (finally held in with a screw in the plastic end thing that is sup to key into the hole in carrier, b/c it kept pulling out, never broke since either!) and one on passenger side and now my rear needs one! Yes, door handles are crap on this car! I def. expected more from a BMW after having crappy cars my whole life (and never one broken door handle ever!)

The N62 is a pos. Stay away from it and go for a M62 if you have to have a V8, otherwise you’re better to go with the straight 6.

I wish I would've seen this video BEFORE buying my Money Pit™. This X5 of mine is crap. Fix one thing and another breaks. It was dirt cheap when I bought it (

Nathan, I have a transmission problem with my BMW X5 (e53 4.4 2001). After I drive it for around 15-20 minutes it gets in a "transmission failsafe mode" and it doesn't change gears smoothly, I have to rev it in around 6 thousand revvs in order to shift up. I have taken it in authorised mechanics, they have tried everything and I still have this problem since 2016. I have also fixed the ABS and DTC wires, so this isn't the problem. What should I check???
@NathansBMWWorkshop7 жыл бұрын
Change the fluid and filter, next would be change the solenoids, that isn't cheap on the zf trans, the problems come from not changing the fluid on the regular basis
@anastasisrekk14027 жыл бұрын
Nathan thank you for answering my question!!! I'll get it tomorrow to my mechanic to check the solenoids, but I forgot to tell you that it also has a problem when switching from drive to reverse and also the radio sometimes shuts off unexpectedly, so I'm thinking if the problem (swithching gears in 6000 thousand rpms) may also be caused by the alternator and the wrong battery voltage. What dou you think? Does it play a role??
@Jsaiis7 жыл бұрын
Anastasis Rekk I had the same problem with mines turns out it was an aftermarket radio that was causing the issue took the radio out never did it again I'm thinking its a voltage problem

Window regulators and door carriers suck! I've had to replace three door carriers and two window regulators on mine. Luckily for KZbin I was able to do it myself. BMW wanted $700 to replace door carrier, and 800 for window regulators and new motor. Door carrier was $57 online and window regulators with new motor included was $47. Saved myself almost $4000 after taxes. Fuck BMW! Oil leaks are increasingly common. Mine has an internal oil leak that BMW wants $4000 to fix it. The rear pinion seal is another common part that breaks down quickly. For a cool $1200 BMW will fix that too. Interior fabric has poor quality glue, in hotter climates fabric falls off. Brakes are just that, they brake, you will be replacing brakes quickly and often. Do not buy this car!!

andywillhite Me too! Changed out 3 windows regulators Plus door mech on passenger side

Door handles and regulators, once you know how to remove door panel, actually are easy! Yes, frustrating at times, but I'm a girl and have done them just fine myself. Just watch one of these DIY vids, and only pay for the parts. And for door handle carriers, get the BMW brand, and save yourself a freak out!

how about don't buy a series one e53 like this, buy a series two E53 2004-2006. far better car and lot more improvements and problems were fixed. more reliable,if they have had wiring mods running across the engine like this one looks and this rough under the bonnet/ hood. RUN

There’s a major difference. Next gen V8 engines and xDrive awd. The facelift has many of the issues sorted out as the earlier comment states.

Love your videos, found you after I bought my 2003 x5 4.4L. I guess the video should be titled "Why NOT to buy an X5". Lol. But they are fun! Mine is very stiff steering not sure if that's normal (being the "sport" version & all - prob the 19" have something to do w/ that as well) or if there are issues w/ linkages or something else??? Oh well. Keep it up! Much appreciative!
