I think the problem that most critics have with natural/mined diamonds is that the diamond companies create artificial scarcity to keep prices high. The diamonds aren't that rare and there are a lot of diamonds just sitting in the diamond companies' vaults where they slowly trickle a bit out at a time. It is just greed creating high prices for no reason other than the profit of the company. That is where I think that most people get the idea of a scam from.

Finally a real report on Lab vs Mined diamonds, I was looking at videos in order to gain more knowledge about them but all I was coming across were high end diamond sellers who clearly dislike lab grown because it affects their sales. Your video has convinced me to go for a lab one, I don`t intend on selling it or trading up but I can get a much bigger well cut stone for half the price of a mined one.

Yup! I agree. Why pay 10-20k for a 2ct diamond when you can pay 5k for that same 2ct diamond. To me it’s a no brainer. Put that extra 10-15k towards a house, something that will actually hold its value or increase in value. Even natural diamonds don’t hold their value very well since they are heavily marked up

Most natural diamond wont go up in value either. I have bought my wife natural diamonds, lab grown diamonds, and moissanite. All great choices and none of them I would say are investment worthy. I will say name brands like Tiffany may hold value better but in general never buy these as investments.

It was 40% cheaper than a Natural Diamond when you bought it, and currently its 90% cheaper than a Natural Diamond. The Value only keeps Degrading which means it will soon be worthless, whereas the prices for Natural appreciated by 40% this year alone, so the investment & Demand in Natural Diamonds will only keep growing.

Buying ANY diamond for investment purposes is completely absurd. The only diamonds that are investment grade are significant enough to end up in a history book. Every other diamond is an indulgence purchase. If you want investment jewelry then buy a heavy gold chain. 10 grand on a diamond no matter how good will end up vanishing. 10 grand into a hand-made Miami Cuban Link will always have a baseline melt value.

Hey, Just want to point something, when you are talking about "blood diamond" saying that there's so many program to guarantee diamond are conflict free like the kimberley process, I can tell you that is just "marketing measure". Im a diamond dealer my self, selling both Lab grown and natural diamond in Antwerp, where most of rough are sold. I went also in Sierra Leone to see the mine and make some rough diamond business, I can tell you that diamond can be simply transported from one country to another to do the kimberley certificate. Even if the country where the rough diamond came from is black listed by the Kimberley process. This is just Marketing. There's no way to guarantee the source of a diamond, thats physically impossible. Great video though !

@Joana Castro I dont agree when you said a diamond is likely a blood diamond. The three majors mining company produce over 70% of the total production(Alrosa, DeBeers, Rio tinto). Those company are heavily regulated so we couldn't call that blood diamond, I guess. Depend on the definition of "blood diamond" at the end of the day... For the color I agree, but then, HPHT diamond are always DEF color ( not always but 99% I would say)... Anyway for central stone of a ring, it is very likely that the stone isn't HPHT but CVD instead. For CVD the color range is larger but as time go, average color improve. Grower continuously improve their recipe...

Dear sweet jesus, the things that "concern" you about lab grown diamonds, are the SAME concerns one should have about a mined diamond. PERIOD! YES, most lab diamonds have a tint. YES, most mined diamonds have a tint. In fact, almost ALL diamonds of any kind are likely to have a tint. If BOTH a lab diamond, and a mined diamond are put side by side, and are professionally graded by the GIA and the specs are the same, there is NOTHING about the lab diamond that is ANY way inferior to the mined stone. NOTHING! Equal grading means equal gem, equal durability, and equal appearance. In fact, a lab grown stone can often have a much better cut, because the cutter isn't under pressure to cut the heaviest stone possible. I hate these sly little innuendos that diamond dealers throw out there to ever so slightly tarnish synthetic diamonds. You want to leverage your expertise just enough to throw doubt upon lab grown gems. This results in some poor schmuck spending WAY MORE than he needs to because suddenly everyone who sells diamonds is making "the face" when they discuss lab grown gems. It's the same kind of thing American car dealers used to do to create doubt on import automobiles. So, if you are going to be completely honest, you will say that all grading specifications being equal, there is NOT, NO, NYET, NIEN, UH AHH, any difference between a lab grown diamond, and a mined diamond. And don't even get me started on rubies, sapphires, and emeralds....

What I don’t understand about the resale value argument is this: in my local market, a 2carat F/G coloured VS1 natural stone is about $20k, and I’ve seen these resell for about $15k (I don’t think natural stones retain 100% of their value on resale). But I can also buy the same exact specs in a lab grown for about $5k, and so the loss I would incur selling my natural stone would near equal the cost of buying a lab stone in the first place. Either way, I’d be out about $5k, plus I could keep the lab stone when it came time to upgrade instead of having to resell it. Am I missing something? Do jewellers in other areas buy back natural stones at 100% of the original value?

In my experience, jewelers will cut you down way more than 5 k on natural diamonds. They will give you a fraction of what you paid for whether natural or not.

Love Bonnie's videos even if I don't really care for diamonds, may get hate but I love Moissanite. 💕 But enjoy hearing the story of the creations made on the channel. But imo the only people that care about diamonds are jewelers, diamond consumers, and thieves/burglars. Obviously it's a little joke but still kind of true. Unless you are in heavy debt, struggling financially, really hate the ring, or relationship doesn't work out which are all possible. Resale value (imo) shouldn't even be a thought unless you're a jeweler or a convict smuggler. 😶 I don't agree that moissanite are only or just "fake diamonds" or something. Sure they are stimulants because we call them that. But they are their own gemstone they just aren't primarily grown in Earth's natural environment. I mean you’re not wrong in the sense that lab grown still require energy to produce…. But you can’t act like earth mined diamonds aren’t absolutely terrible for the environment either. The impact of mining is substantially (practically overwhelmingly) worse from an environmental perspective. Mined diamonds use way more water, practically double the amount of energy to mine. The carbon footprint of a lab diamond is 5% of a mined diamond’s footprint in certain situations. It’s absolutely undeniable that mining is worse than manufacturing diamonds.

The materials used to create lab grown diamonds are mined also. They aren’t mine free, nothing really is. Diamond mines aren’t the only types of mining happening. If you were to travel to Botswana and see for yourself, yes the diamond industry has positively impacted the country, it’s people and wildlife.

Looking for the minerals it takes to make a lab diamond is pretty easy to do (for mining companies), while looking for diamonds is like trying to find a ... well a diamond lol. Way more intensive mining is required. Look up the differences in the ecological footprint and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Thank you for this video, which truly presents a balanced and honest view of both lab-grown and mined diamonds. I have tried, at times, to help people understand that both mined and lab-grown diamonds are diamonds with the only difference being growth structure pattern. And, it is not only mined diamonds that effect the environment, as it takes an enormous amount of energy to produce lab-grown diamonds; mining diamonds also effects the environment. The misconception that an inhumane labor process in used for all mined diamond persist at times, and as you stated, this truth of the past has been changed by policy and protocols to ensure safety and wage issues. These jobs do provide income, monies for hospitals, education, etc. I've always believed that the decision of which diamond to by is an individual one, and neither choice is wrong! What matters is the love and symbolism of a couple's commitment and their belief of what is best in picking the diamond regarding personal beliefs (lab-grown or mined). This was a great video. :-)

Hello :)! As a diamond buyer, our suppliers come from africa who actually like the mined diamond business to still continue. Why? Because that is one of their natural resource where they can profit from. They do not have the same opportunities that 1st world countries have where they can just instantly switch industries. They are simply trying to profit from what is available on their earth and what is working. Also, i think their should have more research regarding lab diamonds. Environmentally friendly is a marketing tactic too. It takes a lot of energy and big ass machines.

Even if you trade up it would be ideal to be able to keep your previous stone for sentimental reasons. So only purchasing something for its trade in value or resale value is a non factor if you can save thousands on the front end to begin with. Then you could even have multiple stones without forking out tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of dollars. I have a smaller GIA triple Exc natural diamond I will never part with but I will never invest in another. Lab green or moissanite from here on out for ethical reasons. Everyone has a different motivator and that’s ok… having a beautiful stone that has meaning is the true point.

I completely agree. I don’t know why some people are hung up on “Lab diamonds have no resale value. Natural diamonds uphold their value.” Like personally, I don’t think that I’d ever want to trade in my engagement ring diamond anyway because of sentimental reasons. If worst came to worst and I suddenly found myself struggling, I would try and sell it, but I’d honestly try to get ahead of that in the first place and not buy an over-priced mined diamond. I understand some people like to trade up when they’re older, but again personally, I’d keep my first one for maybe vacations or something where its possible I could lose it. Idk it’s all personal preference

You've mentioned CVD lab grown diamonds, but is there a way to tell the difference between HPHT lab grown diamonds and natural diamonds? As I understand it HPHT process mimics the way natural diamonds were formed. Would be curious to hear!

Argyle mine diamonds are special because they're pink and are therefore rare. But the bulk of what's being sold is not rare sadly, unless your diamond is a Type IIa diamond. Type IIa diamonds make up 1-2% of all natural diamonds (1.8% of gem diamonds). These diamonds are almost or entirely devoid of impurities, and consequently are colourless (no nitrogen in the lattice) and have the highest thermal conductivity. Thats when marketing comes in using the minority to sell the majority by saying that all diamonds are rare or even worth the $$$. Also explains why natural diamonds don't hold the resell value if you decided to sell the stone years later.

I took my jewelry to an old antique jewelry shop he looked at the diamond & sapphires and told me they are natural not man made. I took them also to a jewelry store and they used a gemstone tester and couldn’t tell me what kind of stones were in the jewelry. I again took them to another jewelry store at the mall just to get another opinion. I wanted to know if the stones were real, the gold kt, clarity and cut. They asked me if I had the paper work for the jewelry. I did have the paperwork at home. I was just testing them to see what they knew. The new generation of jewelry stores do not have a clue. They have been exposed to so much imitation stuff they don’t really care or sometimes don’t even know if what they have is the real deal. They just want to look bling & shiny with all that fake stuff on. I came along when everything used to be made of high quality and very good craftsmanship. The same name goes on all of these top name designers products today but the quality is not the same. You can barely tell the difference between the real thing or the imitation stuff today. I only purchase vintage consumer products when I go shopping. They’re the best quality. It makes me feel real good about myself when I know I’m rockin the real thing!

Wow the KZbin algorithm strikes again! Been looking into and thinking about getting a lab grown diamond. The hardest part is knowing where to buy/look for lab grown diamonds. Some of the companies that get associated with lab grown diamonds have enough bad reviews for me to stay away. I do want to look into getting them, but finding where is hard. Any recommendations? Unfortunately I think some people don’t see that unless your natural diamond is “special” meaning pink or red diamond as mentioned in the video or big diamonds such as 6+ct then it’s pretty limitless and worth pretty much nothing. Those .5 or 1ct are everywhere and no jeweller will give you close to what you paid. Another thing is. You buy let’s say a 2ct natural for 20k and one that’s lab grown for 2.5k. Yes your lab grown might be worth zero or close to nth but that’s only 2.5k lost. Try selling that natural 2ct one. Youre guaranteed to get ripped off and lucky to get like 75% of what you paid. So at the end. Losing like 5-8k on the diamond is still a lot more than buying a lab. (You can buy like 2-3 lab ones for the loss of your natural😂). End of the day. Buying a simple diamond (not those rare diamonds) is never an investment. You want to invest go invest in real estate or stock. Diamond should be for special occasion and “reselling it” mindset should never even occur to the couple

I prefer “conflict free” diamonds. Same as cultured pearls vs natural pearl. Debeers will eventually open the floodgates, and prices of natural will plummet

Lab-grown diamonds have no resale value, meaning no jeweler will buy it back. If you try to sell lab-grown diamonds to a jewelry store, a pawn shop or on EBay, you’ll get pennies on the dollar for it. Regardless, due to massive profit percentages and deceiving tactics of price comparisons to a real diamond value, it becomes easier to convince some uninformed buyers shopping for engagement rings or jewelry pieces to lead them choose a lab grown over a natural diamond. Often many jewelers indirectly encourage their clients by comparing prices with “real natural diamonds” but not disclosing the real resale value and more important long term investment factor of this emotional purchase. Its a time bomb waiting to explode!

For 99% of the people who don't own the advanced machine, the lab grown diamond will most likely be undistinguishable. The trend of keeping a real clear diamond that has terrible resale value is a terrible buying decision. For a decent 4k 1+ carat lab grown diamond is an amazing deal.

The main problem with the KPCS is that the definition of a conflict diamond is far too narrow. It merely aims to end revenue from diamonds going to rebel groups to fund wars. However, it does nothing to address corrupt governments, state-sponsored militias, or the unethical treatment of people involved in the process of mining blood diamonds. This means someone could still have been enslaved, tortured, raped, beaten, or killed to mine that diamond, and it is marketed as a conflict-free diamond because it didn’t directly fund a war. Yes, the mining industry does create jobs, but often these jobs give poverty wages in horrid conditions. Saying that todays diamonds are ethical is extremely disingenuous. Evidence to the contrary is numerous and well documented.

With the current pricing on lab grown diamonds, even if their resale value is ZERO (which it isn't), you would lose less money than you would if you were to pay for and resell a natural diamond of the same grade. It's a no-brainer - just buy a GIA certified lab-grown (stay away from IGI and the others) and you're all set...
