Understanding Lab-Grown vs. Earth-Mined Diamonds: A Rose Analogy Imagine this: you’re looking at a stunning bouquet of roses. Now, consider where these roses might come from. When you order roses from a florist, chances are they were grown in a carefully controlled greenhouse. In this environment, advanced science, specialized equipment, and optimal conditions work together to create beautiful, consistent, high-quality blooms. The roses are nourished with just the right nutrients, protected from harmful pests, and designed to meet your expectations every time. This process allows for efficiency, reliability, and availability when you need them. On the other hand, you could also go out into nature and pick wild roses. These roses, while just as beautiful, are shaped by their natural environment. Depending on where you look, you might find a variety of roses-some pristine, others more unique, with qualities shaped by the soil, climate, and surroundings in which they grew. There are even places in the world where wild roses flourish in remarkable ways, growing naturally in remote or special conditions. Each rose from nature has its own story, shaped entirely by the earth. Now, let’s connect this to diamonds. Lab-grown diamonds are like the greenhouse roses. They are created using cutting-edge technology in controlled environments that replicate the natural process of diamond formation. This approach ensures a sustainable, consistent, and high-quality result. Lab-grown diamonds are chemically, physically, and visually identical to earth-mined diamonds-they sparkle just the same and are graded on the same standards. Earth-mined diamonds, on the other hand, are like the roses growing in the wild. These diamonds are formed deep within the earth over billions of years under extreme pressure and heat. Each one is unique, shaped by the environment where it was discovered. Their rarity and natural origins give them a story that resonates with many people who value the connection to the earth’s natural processes. In the end, both lab-grown and earth-mined diamonds are authentic diamonds-just like both greenhouse and wild roses are still roses. The choice often comes down to personal preference, values, and what matters most to you. Whether it’s the sustainable, innovative creation of a lab-grown diamond or the timeless allure and rarity of an earth-mined diamond, both offer something extraordinary.

I read an article on the diamond business that claimed that when the South African De Beers company controlled roughly 80% of the diamonds being dug out of the ground and therefore 80% of diamonds which could be sold, they could; to a large degree, keep the price of diamonds used in the jewelry market artificially high, by restricting the supply of these types of diamonds to the market. It turns out that diamonds aren't really that rare. In general, it was in the best interest of smaller diamond suppliers to do the same thing, so both De Beers and their smaller competitors profited from the artificial restriction of the diamond supply. But it looks like the good times are over for De Beers. I can't say I feel sorry for them.

As a millennial, I have always wanted my engagement ring to have my birthsone, amythyst. Also, I detest the diamond industry for it's price gouging and human/environmental suffering. So if my engagement ring were to have diamond(s), I wanted it/them to be lab grown. My husband got me exactly what I wanted, and more. He even got it set in a way as to not rip my gloves at work, as i verbalized this concern. My ring is a in a 3 piece bezel setting with the focus stone being amythyst and the 2 smaller supporting stones being cubic zirconia and I work as a nurse.

Moissanite is not a diamond. Well said. It isn’t. Honest sales people at the jewelry stores, and there are some, will tell you that the lab growns are better than real diamonds. Because it’s now a technology, diamonds are going to become cheaper and better every month. Ultimately they will be almost as cheap as manufactured goods. Like Hardware. Really cheap. Real diamonds will ultimately have to match the price. Because they are chemically and physically exactly the same. There will be no added value by getting real diamonds. Zero. For those who don’t know, all gemstones can be man-made now. The same idea. The prices of all of them are going to fall through the floor.
@pokemonsuperfanАй бұрын
Exactly. I think a lot of people are still confused on what a lab grown diamond is. Lab grown diamonds are not moissanite (as you have stated). Chemically and physically, lab diamonds are diamonds. Over time, "real" or "natural" diamonds will become less and less popular. There really is no real reason people would prefer "real" or "natural" diamonds beyond historical preferences and the lab growing process being relatively new.

Colored gemstones: long before exact duplication of diamonds was the exact duplication of sapphire. Lab grown sapphire is the exact same element, not just similar, but the exact same element as found in the earth sapphire. To tell the difference you have to examine them under magnification to see growth lines. You cannot tell just by eye, and in a setting it's impossible. Red sapphire is called ruby. Over three decades ago, I purchase as an engagement ring a ruby surrounded by diamonds..... was very elegant and beautiful, and cost much less than if the ruby was found in the earth. As a Gemologist, I predicted this decades ago. The great thing about higher-quality colored stones is, while there's lab-grown synthetic colored stones, the colored stone synthhetics are much easier to identify as opposed to the lab diamonds, where you need sophisticated equipment that can cost thousands. It just isn't cost effective for the smaller store owners to buy these instruments, which will accellerate the expected decline in trust in what your buying when it comes to diamonds. IMO, diamond prices are going to continue to gradually decline, then, when the masses realize what's up, prices will crater all at once. Not so with finer, high-quality Colored Stones, which IMHO, are more immune to the synthetic issue (easy to identify) and will continue to be stable in value and, IMHO, are way, way more pleasing to look at and own.
