Dallas, what do you think about great smelling fragrances with bad performance? Annoys the shit out of me when I find a scent I love that doesn't last or project. Recently bought a By Kilian fragrance that was supposed to be extreme (Straight To Heaven Extreme) but doesn't project and doesn't last. Paid almost $400 plus shipping. I think I'm going to start being way more selective with my fragrance purchases when it comes to performance. I'll miss out on some great scents sometimes but I'm a lot happier with my fragrances that perform well.

In all honesty, I don't need my old cheap scents to do anything for me. It's about the journey and where I started to where I'm at now. A true collector isn't looking at it the way you are. We all start somewhere and you were proud of them at one time. I'm proud of all the ones I bought because I bought them. Who cares if anyone else doesn't like what I bought. Everyone I got holds a memory for me and that's what's so cool about this frag thing. Stop overthinking things, people good grief.

Great video man. One point to not be overlooked should be that cheap and inexpensive are 2 very separate and distinct things. Cheap = low quality. Inexpensive = low price. I usually buy frags in the $30-50 range and you can find some absolute gems from more obscure houses that are niche quality. You just need to know where and how to look. I’m really into watches as well and couldn’t agree with you more on that point. Buy quality, regardless of the price being low.

I have been WAITING for someone to say this. So, so, so true. Unless you have $20 to spend and NO MORE (which is probably, NEVER), don't buy cheap fragrances. You'd be WAY better off to have 1 great fragrance than 3 bad ones. I cringe every time someone recommends Sean John Unforgivable, essence of cardboard (and everything else on that quality level). What is even the point?! Even if YOU haven't sampled enough to discern the difference in quality, people around you WILL, just by nature.
@CarpathianLife

FKA Imavlog But you can find great fragrances at a very low price. Price doesn’t equal quality or a likable smell.
@fkasample1543
@fkasample1543 5 жыл бұрын
@@CarpathianLife I've found that not to be the case. Common "cheapies" (like CK One Shock, Perry Ellis 360 Red, Sean John Unforgivable)... are pretty horrible; composed cheap and smell cheap. A $20 Nautica is quite literally more valuable being considered "$20 off a good fragrance" by not buying it. I hate seeing people do cheapies list because it's a waste.
@acidic6706
@acidic6706 5 жыл бұрын
Agree so much. Cost of a fragrance might not always indicate the quality 100%, but it's a spectrum imo. The cheaper it is, most likely it isn't using oils as good as it's more expensive counterparts. Finding a great fragrance in the $20 bracket is very challenging, and there are few and far between great frags in that $15-30 bracket. As you explore more expensive fragrances, there will be a higher percentage of greater fragrances within that bracket. And I'd say most niche over $150 is fantastic quality (with some misses here and there), even if the notes aren't your thing. I think the market will naturally correct itself if an expensive brand is bottling the same quality that fragrances under $30 use; that's why fragrances hit discounters too. Buying cheapies is definitely a gamble, especially since they're blind bought way more often than expensive ones.

I get what he is saying. He's simply throwing a "caution" to those who are starting out. I went through the very same thing. I blind bought/bought a bunch of subpar frags when I began this journey - many of which I now regret. It's weird, but it actually stresses me to look at them, Lol. A reminder of how important it is to really slow down, take time, and sample a frag first. Get over that natural tendency to act on impulse. It's also difficult not to want to purchase it NOW, out of fear of an imminent reformation!! If you wait for something to hit discount, you are likely not to get the/a "vintage" formulation.

I have so many frags that I thought I really liked when I first smelled them but now I just dont have room for them anymore and never wear them. The only advantages to cheapies are if you TRULY love them OR if you get something that gets discontinued later, in which case you can flip them for double what you paid. I did that with Escada Men from T.J. Maxx. Cheapies are often a gamble, but so are niche blind buys sometimes.

I've been obsessed with fragances for over 20 years and you are spot on. Most of my cheapies (and by cheapie I understand as something under $25 USD for 100ml ), have turned into gifts for others or expensive bathroom or car air freshener. But just like everything else, there are exceptions. I always wear Preferred Stock (that is where my "journey" started), Aqua Quorum (great office - summer scent) and Lagerfeld Photo (sadly discontinued). Sometimes if I foresee a day without any type of excitement at work, I do not feel like applying good shit and since I'm a proud oversprayer, I'll reach for the cheapest of the bunch. Good advice mate.... I would say have no more than half a dozen cheapies in your collection.

Listen to this man. He is tellin you the truth. Trust me I KNOW. Your taste changes through your fragrance journey. You’ll be stuck with a lot of fragrances you do not wear often or want. At that point you might as well give them away because you won’t make anything off of selling them either way. Luckily I don’t have too many I do not wear but what he is saying is so very true. In my case I’m not even referring to cheap cheap fragrances but designers you can get cheaper through FragranceNet or reputable e bay sellers. Buy what you LOVE.

Depending on your age I guess because if you are young then a big collection of various fragrances is acceptable, but if you are an older man , then there’s no point in buying many fragrances because you won’t be able to wear them all. Also it all depends on your situation, if you are a man who is a business person, then some good quality fragrances is recommended, however if you just hang out with young friends then some good cheaper fragrances is okay. But yes you do start to appreciate good quality fragrances as you grow older. Kinda like wine and many other designer products. Lastly it all depends on your budget.

I disagree. I bought some retro quite cheap scents and they smell great. The problem is that slowly one by one they're disappearing from the market and the prices of now so called "unique" smells also go high very fast. For example, who would have thought that cheap Masumi by Coty in vintage bottle will cost so much now? My grandma used to wear it, it used to be a cheapie.

@@mercedesbenzs600bash your name reminds me that Mercedes-Benz Cologne is also a good one and not heavy on the wallet either. It may be, "Cheap," but it smell great IMO. I'm NOT a frag collector though and I only have about 10 bottles total (and samples) so don't take my word as gospel by any means. Give it a shot!

I always say start cheap just to get your Fragrance wardrobe started then start getting into the higher end. That way you have something to wear all the time but if you want to use the expensive stuff you still can.

Esp wit the Niche perfumes, i buy the clones to try them out, as in Dubai you get many such clones... so if i like them and then i look at investing in the real deal... but that being said doesnt mean that all cheapies are bad in quality ... just treat them as "a perfume" and if you like them great they dont have to be disliked coz of their prize...

Buy what you actually like. Some niche and designer frags smell and perform great but there are a lot that are crap for a high price tag. I have Aventus and 360 . I also love Nautica Voyage but I hate Erolfa. It depends on your preference and po$$ibilities.

but in general, i agree with you (author) here. better one frag that you love than 5 cheap ones that you kinda' like... i've made a lot of cheap buys (3-6 per one order), and like them, but for the same money i would get f.i. Stronger with you, that i love!(500ml of ok VS 100ml of love); just wanted to add this! anyway, keep reviewing, chaos! (when i watched some of your earlier videos, i was wondering when you'll be in the news: "Bodies found burried in woods behind this fragrance lover's cottage"; you've come a long way from then!)..lol.. cheers!!!

I mean no disrespect to you brother but, if you had started listing your points in reverse, this video would be completely unnecessary. Its sad that you threw in that “haters” comment in the end because your whole argument was not very well thought out and im sure if you put some time thinking about it you would realize that at the end of the day there isn’t a $100 difference in a vetiver note in TF’s Grey Vetiver and Lalique’s Encre Noire. Hope you chew on that, keep up the good work👍🏽

@@ExistentialSadness No way if you want to smell like green apple and cucumber buy Voyage. If you want to smell like a pineapple buy Creed Adventus. The difference a tiny tiny fraction of the cost of Creed. I would never pay more than $150 for a fragarance.
@HBO1984.
@HBO1984. 5 жыл бұрын
@@ExistentialSadness Then you have all the different "reformulations" or "batches" of a certain Creed fragarance. That is soo stupid, once you change the smell it becomes a different fragarance or a different version such as "intense", "sport", etc. It is nothing but a money making scam knowing collectors will want every "batch". Shame on Creed, the inventor must be Satanic.

Great video and good advice. I wish I had gotten it when I first started collecting because I did buy a lot of cheaper stuff that ended up gathering dust in a cabinet. Thankfully they were sellable so got rid of everything. But it was a total pain in the neck and I know I lost a lot of money due to shipping and material costs.

I've found my experience to be the opposite, I find more appreciation in my cheaper fragrances than I do in the one's that I splurged on. I think people regret buying cheap fragrances because instead of doing the proper research and testing/smelling samples and decants, they blind buy cheaper fragrances online and they end up not liking whatever they received. So, the end up searching for that one perfect fragrance that will be the end of all fragrances, their signature scent so-to-speak. Consequently, they end up with multiple 3 oz+ bottles of fragrances that they don't even necessarily like, that they won't be able to make a profit on through decanting. When in reality, this whole thing could be avoided if these newjacks just sat down and figured how how to read note breakdowns and really understand what a fragrance smells like before they buy it. Otherwise they'll never figure out what they truly like. For me, I've found that fragrances like Dylan Blue, Nautica Voyage, Aventus, and Versace Eros are all my cup of tea, because I figured out what they actually smelled like and what demographic they were aimed towards before I bought them.

From my cheapies i only regret buying thallium, Cuba copacabana, joop, and that's it. The rest of my cheapies like coach for men, lacoste l12.12 blanc, dunhill icon, and bvlgari aqva amara have given me countless compliments and they were all about 60 or less. Smell is a very suggestive thing. I don't care if it's 800 or 10. I just need it to smell good, last a decent number of hours for what i paid, and not have anyone say i stink.

Eh.... I get your point Dallas but this isn't 100% true. CDNIT HANDS DOWN.... TO ME is better than Aventus. But that's just me. As well as Alexandria fragrances quality blows Creed and most Tom Ford fragrances out of the water. Alot of these so called niche and designer frags just care about your money and not about the quality and longevity of the notes and scents. But love the uniqueness of subject matter on yiur page my dude!!
