We are retired and years back we were on vacation driving through a small town in Tennessee when I noticed a pawn shop. I can't pass up a pawn shop so I stopped to check it out. It was old with a lot of older stuff sitting around covered with dust. Back in the corner they had some guns and a glass case full of old M-16/AR-15 GI mags. A bunch of them had black followers and some had green. I asked about them and the kid acted shocked. I told him I would be willing to buy all of them if they gave me a good price, and he ran to get his 90 year old Grandma. She asked what in the world would I want with all those dam things. I told her I collected them and would love to have them. I told her it's a one time deal, if her price is good there sold, if not, she can keep them. She told me that I was the first person in years to even ask about them. She told me to make an offer, I told her $2.00 each for the green and $1.50 for the black followers. She told me I could have all of them for $1.50 each, sold. Keep in mind that this is a large glass case that's almost full. She walks back behind a blanket that they had hanging in a doorway and started dragging a large box that was filthy out half full of mags, I about crapped! I told her that we were driving a Honda Civic and would try our best to get all of them in the car. It cost me around $1,700 after tax, and she had to mail me the rest. The car was totally stuffed to the brim for our 400+ mile drive home. This was my best AR related deal ever and it fell in my lap.

Another source of mags is Palmetto State Armory, for the longest time you could find metal mags made by D&H with the Magpul anti-tilt followers for $7.99 - $8.99 on sale sometimes with free shipping with an order of 10 or more, but not as I'm writing this comment. The one thing I learned about the Magpul polymer mags is that you need the dust cover to push down on the rounds to relieve stress on the feed lips - which is the main reason those mags end up failing. I personally prefer the GI style mags only because my gear is all surplus because it's inexpensive and it works.

i supplement my 30 rnd load out with a sprinkling of old steel 20 round mags. they tend to promise a consistent feed because they have metallic followers quality spring, steel springs, and that are shorter and less prone to kinking or binding especially since they don't need to accomodate a curve. they also make the system less cumbersome for maneuver in combined spaces, i.e. foliage and vehicles etc. the empties are easy to stow in pockets or pouches, and easy to store handily in various nooks and crannies, like flak vest pouches, ass packs. consoles or glove boxes. On long distance dismounted scout patrols we would run the full 6 mags, a 20 rnd mag in the mag well and a couple on our person in a cargo pocket and/or a blouse pocket. that way, even if your not in your harness, at the very lease you have your weapon and a couple 20 round mags and a speed loader. if the old steel mags get a little sticky, we used to load 28. maybe that's a myth, but it seemed to work. the idea is the reduced tension on the first couple rounds would mitigate friction on the feed lips that might cause a misfeed. any feedback on this would be apreciated though. Last thought, instead of fancy stipling or grippy rubber coating, we also fashioned tabs out of 500mph tape, which also mitigated noise, was still slippery in and out ot the nylon pouch but still facilitated handling in the darkness and chaos (which for me personally it never got quite that pear shaped!).

I then had one steel mag( ran that). Reloaded the pmags and not one of them will sit right and if I smack them in hard enough the bolt carrier gets jammed up. The steel is the only one to now feed. The same day I ran my ruger ranch bolt action which also came w pmag and have had problems day one with the bolt needing a lot of force to run( this same day it jammed completely and wouldn’t move at all with mag in place). Sometimes you can get away with buying cheap mags (army surplus), if you understand that you’re only delaying paying for quality. The nice thing about army surplus aluminum mags is that so long as their feed lips are good, you can fix them up with new followers, springs, and base plates. Plus a new coat of some MoS2 dry film lube and they look brand new. I just did all that to the first 4 mags I ever bought and I’m really happy with them. They went from Bubba-camo dysfunctional trash to sleek high performance mags: brand new springs, yellow followers, L base plates, all made by magpul. Instead of having to chuck them and being down to a dozen good mags, I instead have 17 quality mags via some investment and a little bit of work. They can be not only serviceable for duty but also give your other mags in rotation some relief. I know you said you like to keep your mags loaded and that’s your prerogative, but I like to rotate mine to extend their service life. I figure that if I paid for good pmags, D+H metal mags, and lancer mags, I’m gonna take care of them and not add wear n tear when I’m not using them. Accordingly, the surplus mags I refurbished take on some of the load. That’s just my opinion, thanks for the video.
@Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors3 жыл бұрын
I totally agree about buying service mags IF! a person knows what to look for. Most of my viewers won't know how to look at service mags and decide if the feed lips are good or if the bodies might be damaged. I KIND of know- but I have been wrong twice before on what I thought would be good mags. So as a general rule I would suggest avoiding doing that- but I do it myself. You have to find service mags REALLY cheap, or else if you get it wrong a few times like I did you might not actually be saving any $. Fwiw- i believe if you do some research you will find that rotating, loading, and unloading mags will wear them faster. Ymmv. I dont care enough to start a fight over it lol Thanks for the comment.
@nicknaylor98953 жыл бұрын
@@Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors fwiw, I keep 4 mags loaded for 3 months at a time, then they don’t see stress for another year. I don’t get many opportunities to shoot (I live in a big city) so the loaded ones generally just sit loaded until it’s time to rotate. But in any event, I can’t say definitively whether constant compression will damage magazines, so I’m not trying to say your way is wrong. I just have my way of doing things, that’s all. Keep up the good work man.
@yellowdog762jb2 жыл бұрын
Staying loaded / compressed doesn't stress the springs. The number of compression / decompression cycles wears out springs. So loading them and unloading them every so often, just to "give them a rest", vs leaving them loaded, is actually harder on the springs. We're probably only talking about an extra 4 to 6 cycles a year, so that's not really a big deal in the scheme of things. But don't worry about leaving them loaded for years at a time. If you have a couple of thousand rounds set back, I don't think that you need them all in mags. I would agree that any prepper worth their salt should have a full combat load in loaded mags for each rifle they have. Plus you probably want another full set of mags to practice with. Showing up to training with them already loaded is a must. Other than that, I find storing extra ammo in the factory packaging, or in sealed ammo boxes more convenient than storing loaded mags. It also makes it easier for me personally to try to shoot my oldest ammo first in training. Twice I've "lent" ammo to folks for training. They paid me back w new ammo they obtained shortly after the training. Having it in factory boxes was more convenient. That's one of those KZbin " Yeah but stories ". It probably won't happen to many folks. But just sharing. I have a variety of different mags, including rebuilt GI mags, and even some that are stamped Law Enforcement Only that I bought after the Clinton gun ban expired. Metal mags fit into most pouches better, and it's often possible to load 2 mags per pouch, which I like. And they are very easy to pull out for a reload. They also store in a marginally smaller space. Plastic eventuality breaks down with age and heat. So if you're prepping to pass stuff to your kids and grandkids, maybe you'll want to throw some metal mags into the plan, just in case. I use Pmags for my hunting rifles because they are more silent when carried loosely in a backpack, plus that is the only time I use those little covers they come with. Brownells has a supply contract with one of the branches of the military. I forget which one. But their metal mags often go on sale and they have worked well for me. Be sure and test every mag that you buy. Even the ones that you plan to rathole away. You want to know for sure that they'll work if you pull them out 5, 10, or 20 years from now.

@@yellowdog762jb I actually now have enough mags such that the ones I have in rotation 3 months at a time only compress/decompress every 3 years. So it’s only an added cycle every 3 years. I have something like 60 and will probably buy more. Longevity by volume is my philosophy.

All the CA compliant P Mags I've bought come glued at the bottom. I don't like that. I prefer Lancer mags or even Hex Mags. At least Hex Mags use a 10 round limiter and spring (which can be replaced like many of us did during freedom week). Never had a problem with Lancer, Hex Mags, or Daniel Defense mags.

If you ever want to part with the Center Industries mags, I want one. I used to deliver their mail back in the late 90s and early 00s before I moved indoors. It's about a mile and a half from the first post office I ever worked in. I did a double take trying to make sure I was reading it correctly. Since they're LE mags from the ban years, I have seen pics but by the time I bought my first black rifle new 30 round mags were cheap. I have a ton of D&H mags with the Teflon finish and Magpul follower and Gen 2 windowless Pmags. I keep my box of home defense rounds in a Colt 20rd mag that's at least 35 years old my dad had. He is a Mini 14 guy and didn't need it. The 20 is great using my rest to check my accuracy. It allows more adjustment.

I know this is old but don’t overlook Hex Mags. I’ve have about 12 or so and they’ve worked very well for me, also usually a few dollars cheaper than P- Mags
@Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors5 ай бұрын
So through my training groups I have personally seen a TON of failures from hexmags from multiple sources. Normally that would motivate me to buy the hexmags then rum 500 or $1000 worth of ammo through them in a class to verify- But for me it isn't worth it just to save a few dollars per mag as compared to pmags. Which is kind of the idea of the video- back in the day I paid like $30 a mag in Afghanistan and that's what people were used to paying for mags- but that's not where we are at. There is no reason to save "a few dollars per mag" when a combat proven mag is $10-15 anyways. I haven't bought mags in awhile so idk if that is even what they are anymore.

Have you tried the hexfly series 2 mags? Seems to be almost on par with the pmags and Lancer mags but only 10$ each. I'm gonna try some. I ordered some Lancer and hexflys to try them both out. Also you had mentioned having 1-2k rounds on hand and was wondering do you ever guy online? And do you order in bulk when you do? (500-1000 rounds)
@Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors2 жыл бұрын
I havent tried them, but i would be wary- lmk how it goes for you. Test them hard, because many mags will be reliable out of the box for a good while- but then when they are loaded for a long time and exposed to dirt and extreme heat they become literal trash. I like to order in bulk online, yeah. The source always varies.

I don't look at the name i look at the quality , but i will tell you if you have a ruger mini 14 your best bet is to stick with mag's made by ruger for it , with a ar15 i have found most will work it's just some will last much longer than others, an for the money i prefer military issue aluminium case, you can always find new springs and followers and referb them when needed.

It’s the older aluminum gi mags I have had issues with or anything marked pro mag stay clear of that shit for real for any firearm. I know this video is older but I can get the gen2 p mags for 11 12 bucks hex for 10 at my local sporting good store so I bought a shit load. Not a single issue with any of them. Do you need to have the most hardest battle tested mag? Personally no I don’t think so they need to work of courses.As a civilian more geared towards protecting my community or who knows what else these days I don’t see myself slamming them into walls or climbing mountains of Afghanistan no it’s a urban environment for most people in America.
@Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors7 ай бұрын
@Joe-ie8vk I don't necessarily disagree with you but I do have 1 caveat to add- The civilian fighting for a community or without military support is 10x harder on gear than a soldier. I guarantee and promise this is true and I have seen it- when you have no resupply, less training, less support, less backup- You become more desperate and stuff HAS to last longer. I didn't need to add that but maybe it'll help with perspective.

There are 4 firearms rules, if you follow them, nobody gets shot. 0 chance that ill show up to a range unloaded, and 0 chance ill leave unloaded. Clean guns in the safe are unloaded though, because there is no chance that ill need to grab them and use them quickly.
@slick73nova4 жыл бұрын

Were you in the military?
@jackmcgramm22594 жыл бұрын
All guns are loaded until you physically pick it up and check to see if its unloaded. Then check again. If you still think there is a one in a billion chance it is loaded, check a third time. Only then do you perform any manipulation of it, dry fire, etc. The second you set it down, look away from it, get distracted, or in any way turn your attention from it, it immediately becomes loaded again.
