I just received a hollow gold men's bracelet marine link. I can actually see where the joints are ( not sure what it called- almost appears like gaps). Do I need to be more careful with it than the necklace or is it more susceptible to breaking since it's on my wrist or if it catches on something?
@A22LS
@A22LS 3 жыл бұрын
Be VERY careful with it. Anything worn on the wrist is more susceptible to snagging on things. Also keep it clean. And by clean I mean like clean it once a week. Dirt and grime is the #1 killer of chain jewelry.

@@A22LS thanks for the reply. Sadly I've only worn it for 5 hours today and when I took of my protective gear In the lab , it just broke a link. Bummer - my gf gave it to me and it had the this foolish price of 1500 on it and inside the box. I'm hoping it was only 100 - 400$ or something like that. She got it on black friday from Macy's. Now I have to figure out where to get it fixed 🤕

I sure hate to hear it but now you see exactly why I made this video. I hate it when this happens to people. I understand why the industry produces them- they are just trying to hit a price point that people can afford, but sadly it’ll get to a point where the coat of repair and the time it spends at the jeweler is too excessive and you’ll be left with just scrap gold. I wish you luck in getting it fixed, I’m sure it can be, but now you know how gentle you have to be with it.

Length perhaps? Gold weighs what it weighs, so if one chain of exact same length and diameter weighs almost half of another, the math doesn’t add up. However don’t confuse gram weight (g) and pennyweight (dwt), they are different.

How can you tell if a rolo link bracelet is hollow or solid? Thank you! I have a 950 silver bright white beautiful rolo bracelet, about 1/4 of an inch wide and thicker links 14.6 grams of 950 silver. It felt lighter then I thought it would. Is there a trick to see if it’s hollow? :)
@A22LS
@A22LS 4 жыл бұрын
Most, but not all Rolo chains are either hollow or the links are thin. With yours being a 1/4” wide and weighing almost 1/2 oz, you’ll likely get a lot of wear from it if you take care of it and clean it religiously. Dirt and grime is the number one killer of chains and bracelets. Another thing to bear in mind is bracelets tent to take more abuse from wear than a necklace will so be mindful while wearing and try not to abuse it. Thanks for your question, hope this reply helps!

@A22LS
@A22LS 2 жыл бұрын
If you’re casting and your cast turns out black it’s oxidation/firescale. If the melt is black, it may be contaminated gold. Use some borax as a flux when you’re melting and see if it draws off. Hard to know exactly what you’re dealing with based on limited info of what you’re actually doing. Maybe this helps some.

I have a hollow 10k, 24", 11mm miami cuban link chain. 84 grams. (Almost 3 ounces) i paid $9,014 for it and have no problems, however i really want a solid one. My jeweler allows me to trade it in for full price on an upgrade which i jave done twice. 2 questions, do you think i paid too much, and also is staying at 10k instead of upgrading to 14k going to give me a problem years down the road? I clean it religiously but was wondering if the lower karat would fade over time?
@grindmodepaul6145
@grindmodepaul6145 2 жыл бұрын
If I were you, I’d atleast get 14k solid. 10k is less then half gold so in reality you’re wearing more of the other metal than you are gold. Also I don’t think nothing beats a solid chain. Everyone has their reasoning though
@A22LS
@A22LS 2 жыл бұрын
The 10k will wear better over time because it has less gold content than 14k. That being said, the 14k will wear faster than 10k, and 18k faster than 14k. You’re keeping it clean so good on you for that. As for 10k versus 14k, I say buy the one you can afford. I’d much rather see a customer buy a lower karat chain that is solid and well built than a 14k hollow that is poorly built. In my honest opinion on the price, it seems a bit steep to me but I don’t live in your market so it’s hard for me to judge that. However, if your jeweler is letting you trade in for full price credit on a new one of higher value then there’s quite a bit of markup to be able to do so. Your jeweler can’t scrap that chain and get anywhere near their asking price, nor the wholesale value they paid for it. That don’t make it bad, it’s just part of the game. It’s the part of the game I never liked playing though. Thanks for your question and good luck!

thanks, would you say gold filled better than a real hollow bracelet? I hear hollow bracelets break easy and hard to repair?
@A22LS
@A22LS 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question. This is difficult to answer as it depends on preference. Gold filled is definitely better than gold plated but gold filled will wear over time. Considering the cost difference quality gold filled is cheaper than hollow 10k and might last longer, it depends on how the chain is made. I’ve seen gold filled rope chains with non soldered links that just fall apart, so that wouldn’t be any good. There’s a number of factors that would make that difference though. I had two more hollow ropes I repaired yesterday from the same customer. One was so bad I had to remove an inch of it due to mangled links. So I’d say go with solid gold and if that’s not in your budget find a quality gold filled with soldered links and stay away from hollow completely.

Thicker links will last longer unless caught on something and pulled, then there just isn’t enough strength to keep them from distorting. I wouldn’t recommend any bracelet to hollow. Bracelets are subject to more abuse and the smaller they are, the less metal is there to keep them together.

Not “all” are bad. I’ve worn an 18k hollow figaro chain every day for almost 30 years and it’s still going strong. I keep it clean which helps. The problem is there’s different qualities of hollow. Hollow but thick walled and hollow and thin walled, if you don’t 100% know what you’re looking at, there’s a good chance of getting burned. So in short, they aren’t all bad, but hollow and comparatively inexpensive is a bad combination.

Is it possible to fill a hollow gold pendant with more gold to make it solid?

@@A22LS thanks for the response. Can you explain why? What would be the best way to fill the back to maker it solid/more heavy?
@A22LS
@A22LS 3 жыл бұрын
Gold and other precious metals must be cast at a single time. In other words, there is no way to pour molten metal on solidified metal and make it a homogenous piece of metal. You can try it yourself with lead. Take any form of lead and try to add to or fill it with more molten lead. Metallurgy just won’t allow it. The only way to take a hollow piece and make it solid is to take it’s imprint, make a wax model of that imprint, and fill the void with wax. Then during lost wax casting you cast the solid wax into solid metal. No way to add to voids later to make a hollow piece solid.
@TopicFight
@TopicFight 3 жыл бұрын
@@A22LS thanks. How does soldering work then? Why wouldn’t you be able to just use that same technique to fill?
@A22LS
@A22LS 3 жыл бұрын
Solder doesn’t fill gaps and voids. At least that’s not what it’s purpose is. Solder is alloyed so that it melts below the temperature of the karat gold you’re soldering. It is designed to bind two pieces of metal at a flush joint. If you were to fill, say the back of a hollow pendant, it’d take a lot of it and you’d wind up with a piece that wouldn’t be the same karat as you started with and it would be a puddled up mess. Lost wax casting a solid piece is the only way it can be done.

I wouldn't do it with a bracelet or a ring because i used my hands way too much and i would dent it fast. But a chain on my neck will most likely not come in contact with anything, and i wouldn't wear a pendant on a hollow chain, it just sit there so not much can happen. I have a 8 mm cuban link chain 10 karats gold but i know it's either hollow or semi hollow because it doesn't seem heavy enough to be solid.

Indeed. However hollow chains from 30 years ago are not the same as hollow chains that are being produced today. I am also a jewelry professional which means I can clean it more thoroughly than the average wear a cane and I was more diligent in doing so. My hollow Figaro came from Saudi Arabia and although Hollow was still made with a heavy wall tubing. What is being made today is nowhere near that quality.
