I’m in Fl and due to my work I’m in HOA communities, every day. The ppl here have been pushing to change this ridiculous rule. Now I’m starting to see mangoes and Loquats in those communities. There is even a new subdivision with HOA that started a community garden. I hope this spreads across the US. Thanks for sharing 👊

We should be pushing for this across the country. There should actually be a law that prohibits HOAs from telling you that you cannot grow food.

Yeah, once I lived in an HOA and they do tell you everything you have to do outside your house. Front yard and back yard. I will NOT ever live in an HOA again.

If your HOA allows grass, either in the front or the back, plant bamboo. It is technically a grass. If you have see-through fences, plant your bamboo right next to it for a privacy wall.

Unfortunately most homes in Florida are HOA homes. I had to search hard for one that wasn’t. Also, I would never buy a place because it had a “doggy spa”.

I’m so glad I live in the neighborhood I do. It basically dates back to the 1950s, mostly single-family ranch homes. Fortunately, we do not have an HOA. It’s a neighborhood with many mature hardwoods and conifers, along with shrubs and flowers. I’ve lived here since 1982, on a dead-end street. A lot of people in my neighborhood are into gardening. I really love it. Plus it’s a walkable neighborhood, not a lot of thru-traffic. I’m very grateful.

As I've said before, when I was looking to buy a home my realtor tried to talk me into looking at homes in HOAs. I told him I will not even consider it, so don't bother me with any home in an HOA. I'm glad I did that. One thing I think you forgot to mention is that you PAY the HOA for the privilege of telling you what you can and cannot do with your own property!

I could not stand to have to live in that type of environment. I rented in a neighborhood like that for awhile and it was a nightmare. They also do not treat everyone the same.

The gated community is a joke. I would rather buy land with an ugly house so i can fix the house and plant all the fruit trees and any other plant I want. Just make sure it is not an HOA neighborhood. HOA makes me sick to my stomach 🤢🤮.

Unfortunately, in So Cal developers have taken advantage of the limited availability of older homes and HOA's are everywhere. I don’t think the people have a choice but to buy in nowadays if the alternative is to rent forevever.

Boo HOAs BOOO. I planted a Trovito Orange at my mom's house, in the front yard. I was surprised actually, their plant list included citrus and stone fruit trees, how progressive!

You did not read the CC&R’s prior to Mom moving in. She was there for you, but you were not there for her. When you were a baby, she made sure you were kept out of harm’s way. What will you do when she gets cancer, stroke, or dementia?

HOA has ridiculous rules. They didn't work to buy the home so shouldn't have a say. Why would anyone buy a house that has HOA? They make sure it won't feel like your home. I bet HOA do whatever they want to their homes. More important things going on in the world than HOA rules.
