Reduced plants: I always check that section out. I bought a six pack of sedum that was all rotted and propagated from the leaves... Still growing them over a decade later! Same goes for many of my cacti, succulents, and shrubs! The key is finding out what you can save and what's better left to the compost pile, as you said! 👍👍

I grow French marigolds every year from Lowe's. I wondered how my grandmother harvested the seeds. I watched her collect them. I was younger than 7 years . Put them in cloth hang on a nail in the shed. Now I see I've been throwing away seeds when I deadhead all these summers. T y.

You are going to laugh at this but I went to Lowe's this morning and found some marigolds on the discount rack for 1.00 each. They are the jumbo flowered ones. Can I also save the seeds from those? It's so nice to have someone on KZbin from the south because I live in southern Alabama and sometimes it's frustrating to grow things in the high humidity. Today I also found some Shasta daisies there at a discount and I was hoping they will grow here. If you could show us what grows well in the south it would be nice. Thanks again for all your help.

These grow all year down here in FL zone 9b. They really take off in spring and fall though. My dad taught me how to plant these and collect their seeds when I was a little girl. They’re the easiest flowers on earth to grow. You’re right about them being forgiving. They’re very tough! I bought some really good quality ones this year from Botanical Interests that say they’re edible on the package and I’m going to eat them in my salads this year. I spent all yesterday morning transplanting the seedlings into their own containers. I use them as a border around my patios to deter pests (along with rosemary) and also plant them in with my tomatoes and certain veggies to help protect them also. 🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼

I had one marigold I thought I had lost and was going to put something else in the pot but when I looked at it it was covered with dozens of self seeded seedlings. I carefully washed the seedlings to separate without too much damage to the roots. I planted several together and got 6 massive plants in my vege garden, the only one that didn't survive was smothered by the sweet potatoes when they overgrew the position. Later I had some in two small pot which the plants had reach the end of their lives. My harvesting and planting was far less difficult than in this video. I removed the dead heads from the dying plants, rubbed the flowers between my fingers to expose the seeds and dropped the seed bunch on top of the soil damp from recent rain, that's it. Now I have masses of seedlings, which has already given a flower from the first seedling to emerge. It would be hard to not get marigolds endlessly.

What soil do you use to pot them in a container? Will any potting mix do? Or does it need a special blend? Thanks! A very informative video
@auyannaplants
@auyannaplants 3 жыл бұрын
I do use a potting soil mix mixed with a little compost but I will tell you that all potting mixes are not the same. There are some potting mixes that have alot of big wood chips in them which I don't care for. Last year we found a local source that had a good mix that we use. Hope this helps and thank you so much for watching!

Thank you for the idea of a garden party!! I learn something new today, collecting the seeds. Last year I didn’t have much luck with marigolds doing direct sowing. The only plant that survived didn’t bloom. This year I am starting the seeds in seedlings soil with good germination. I will be using what I learn today to collect the seeds. Zone 13a

Marigold are edible flowers and they are beautiful in salads. If you are going to eat them I would suggest you grow your own from seed organically or buy them from a source where you know how it was grown. Most commercial garden centers and growers put chemicals on them. Thank you so much for watching!

Hi. I just found your videos...thank you. I have a question. I am pretty new to gardening (this is just my 2nd year). I want to plant marigolds to determine pests. Do I have to put them directly in my raised beds in order for that to work or can they just be nearby. If I plant them in my beds with they keep pests put of that area of the yard or just out of the beds? I think I'm not going to be a very poor gardener because I am TERRIFIED of snakes...even if they are little ones. 😢. I don't mind bugs but snakes scare me. Any ideas?
@auyannaplants
@auyannaplants 3 жыл бұрын
Let me tell you....I am terrified of snakes but we have them every year. The only year we did not have any is when the neighbors had a cat. You can direct sow them in the ground when the time is right or you can start them in cell trays. I plant them around my garden like as a border to help with the pest because they give off a scent that many pests do not like but I will be honest....I am not sure if they will keep out snakes. I hope this helps and thank you so much for watching!

A couple questions for you You pinched off the heads after that had turned brown and closed up. The marigold heads I gathered for seeds were "spent" but I was dead heading the plant to help regenerate growth... would those seeds still b as viable? I had gathered them over and year ago but getting myself organized now for winter. I'm in zone 6b/7a so will be starting seeds probably around Feb-ish... My real question was if I want to start these in my homemade seed starter tubes... how would I place them in soil? Vertically, horizontally or does it matter - does it matter which end is up or down?
@auyannaplants
@auyannaplants 4 жыл бұрын
I have a container and I just sprinkle them on the soil and cover them lightly and they germinate just fine. They do not have to be in a certain position. Once they are big enough in the container I carefully remove them one by one and place them where I would like them to go. I hope this helps and thank you so much for watching.
