I hike a lot and have made photo books every year for the past 8 years or so. I choose different themes each year, even though the images are mostly Forest and trails. For 2020 and 2021 I wrote more of a story how my life changed during the pandemic. I can also see how much better my photos have become over the years. These books are for me. Some day, when I can no longer hike, I can look back and enjoy the memories. I have used Picaboo for all my projects and they’ve been fabulous!

That was spot on Nigel. I had never seen any of my images in print and I had seen an Insta post by Saal offering £100 voucher to get a book printed, which I applied for and got accepted. I was seriously blown away by the book I received, not just by the quality of the book itself, which was outstanding like you mentioned, but also how good my images looked, they definitely took on a new dimension! It's such a nice thing to show people in person. In fact I'm off to dig it out right now! 😀

You are so right about the difference between seeing your photos on a computer screen versus printing them. I had been enjoying all of my digital photos only on my iPad. But, I recently took a special photo tour of a local cavern. I liked some of the photos I took, so I splurged and had 4 printed on aluminum to hang in our outdoor area. Seeing my photos in print, 2 are 20x30 and 2 are 24x36, absolutely blew me away.

Nice challenge and reminder. Our household is not short of photo books but I just realized that I have not made one for myself showcasing my favorites or developing a theme, sequence etc. as you suggest. Many are genealogy books as that is my wife's passion and several trips and life stories. I have been the fill in guy with "I need a photo of this" or "Could you try to edit this photo to improve it for printing" and some of my photos do end up in several of the books. However, the point I hear you making is I need to do this for myself to create my own challenges and stories and potentially improve my photographic abilities. Thanks for the video.

Oh my goodness, for more than two years now, I've been collating my 'daily-captured images' from the extraordinary year of 2020, with a book in mind!! Talk about timely synchronistic events! I have the Title, cover, page design. I circulated PDFs of the best few hundred images to a dozen or so of my friends/family, for them to choose their personal preferences, marking them 'good, better, best'. And this very week, with the changing season, brings more time for me to finally put the book together. Thank you for your timely video and the perfect information and spur of inspiration! Thank you, Nigel, once more!

Happily surprised to be thanked, from you, and included with the so many others for the support of your book - you are truly generous - your enthusiasm and lessons are so inspiring and have encouraged me to not only print my own work - but purchase my own Pro-printer - getting it off the screen and onto paper - amazing! We hope you're keeping well and your back is on the mend. I'm planning to retire later this year. I'm 69 and I've decided to call it a day and work on my photography more; this is what I enjoy doing. When I bought my camera I felt it was the bees knees. A simple bridge camera with a fixed variable focal length lens. As I used it more and more and gained confidence I realised that one day I would need to buy a more professional camera. I have learned down the years that the limitations in my camera meant I had to work harder and to be more aware and I think that has been a benefit. I think I'm going to stay with my bridge camera to see how far I can take it. I never considered a book and maybe that is something I can think about. I've no plans to be a professional photographer, I think I'm a wee bit late for that, but I want to try hard to be a good amateur. I take a lot of pleasure in my photography, I hope I can share that in the future. Best wishes to Pebbles.

Great advice. Nothing sharpens the focus like knowing you are creating a permanent, real world object. When it's just sitting on a hard drive or on social media on a tiny phone screen, the detail or editing never seems all that important. I spent a large amount of time editing a collage of images for a giant 2000 piece jigsaw puzzle and the selection process certainly raised my standards over what I consider a worthy photo - even if my day to day captures aren't that much better.

Great subject matter! We don’t know what we have until we produce our photos in printed form. I’m fortunate enough to be a graphic designer and having a sense of design laying out were it capture the flow and rhythm of the book. One must first understand the relationship between text, and photos on the page of the book. Theses are the most important factors in making your book sparkle.👍 “Happy Trails .” 🍺

Great video Nigel. One of your best as its about giving to the photographic community. I am almost 70 so prints have always been a big part of photography for me. I have produced several books and I feel sequencing is the hardest part, especially if you include monochrome images as well. I am starting to include more text as I feel it adds rather than detracts from the image. I look forward to your upcoming videos as I imagine with your back, b-roll would be a very challenging aspect.

I think printing (and thus photobooks) are a valuable exercise for photographers. Even if we don't ever intend to sell the prints or the books, it's good to look at your photos on something other than a screen. Sometimes you'll see stuff you didn't notice on the screen (at least I have) that has made me be more aware of various aspects of photography (whether it's at the time of capture, or during the editing process). Printing at home can be expensive if you do a lot of it, but I think it's worth the value (and hassle) in the end for those who are serious about photography. Plus, printing (or creating photo books) also gives you something tangible to hold, instead of just something on your computer (a digital file; as it's not the same as holding a print or a book of work that you created).

Hey Nigel, great video. Thank you. I will be working on my next book. The books you get printed is what you go back to if you want to take a moment to recall memories. Yes, you can look at the photos on your hard drive but you feel the photos in your books. Could you explain your coloring and sorting system you use for preparing you book? Btw it hurts me to see all those great photos and most of them are rated 3 stars in your catalogue. 🤯
