DON'T buy Sony Fs5 in 2024...

Actually just picked up an FS5ii as an upgrade/2nd camera to my a7iii. I was able to get one under $1,000, plus a Ninja V+ with Connect kit for under $500 to be able to record RAW. For me this seemed better that spending like $800 more for the FX30 with top handle. I traded the better autofocus for internal NDs and better ergonomics plus a cost savings. So far, with my minimal testing I find the autofocus to be good enough for my use and most of the time I'm pulling focus manually anyways.

Not even in 2015, when the camera came out, was it really good internally. The truly groundbreaking thing was when you recorded on an Atomos Shogun Inferno at 4k 120p ProRes RAW (after it came out) with an s35mm sensor, only there it transformed into a beast. The best ergonomics of a camera in history, to the point that they repeated the almost exact design in the FX6, perhaps the most "dreamt" camera of today (and which is already old too). I love the "hasselblad handheld technique".

This camera can still be a killer A cam by using one thing....the pdmovie live air 3 smart mini. trust me on this, you'll thank yourself later. I had mine parked for the longest time until I discovered the lidar autofocus. now it uses a T1.5 cinema 35m lens and its just a different monster now.

All in all - awesome content! Thx a lot! Very convincing argumentation. Voice could be clearer articulated - sometimes hard to understand for non-natives. This could increase your audience. The zoom by grip funktion can really be helpfull on the FS5.

The Fs line of camera really shined recording externally. The FS700r with Shogun Inferno I still use for an extra interview angle. 4k 10bit 422 Prores. But that sensor is really noisey. Needs perfect lighting

Yeah i never even bothered shooting externally since it makes a perfect compact setup into a large clunky one but you can get some amazing looking footage out of it.

Grabbed a FS5mkii last summer with a shogun connect, absolutely love how convenient it is to shoot with it, the look and feel of the camera, small files,, but regarding image quality, when you come from Blackmagic, I still really try to like it, but still haven't find any way to have a pleasant image (to my eyes) at this date. Tried to manually color grade it, tried different LUTs, still feels like colors aren't rich, or is it highlight rolloff I don't know, the image doesn't look "cinematic" but very "video camcorder" hard to explain. Do you have any luts or tips to recommend? :) Thinking about upgrading to a FX6, but what you said about image quality isn't reassuring :D

Idk if you still have it. But if you want 10 bit 422 shoot 1080p (listen it still comes out crisp) also switch from iso to grain. Manual focus with camera and strap the auto focus 😂. I have fs5, I never use it for 4k. Ppl are always shocked that everything is 1080 and upscaled.

Great video. I'm finding it hard to justify getting this camera when I compare it to the Canon C100 mk ii and thr Bmpcc 4k. The only reason the bmpcc 4k is a hard sell is my current budget. I'd easily get that one. But i havent seen a clear win over the Canon c100 mk ii except with the 4k that isnt that clear. The internal NDs is the major selling point over the bmpcc4k.

Do you still have fs5? If so look into switching the fs5 from iso to "grain" and watch the difference. I only shoot Slog3, S-Gamut not S-Gamut3 because of the noise. Granted you can only change the temp with 3 options 😂 which I hate.

Oh man if you can get it for 500 that’s a great deal. It’ll be a great camera to learn cinematography with but you might be better off going with a black magic pocket 4k if your main goal is to do short films. Fs5 is more of a work horse, better for corporate type of videos.

Build in ND are fookin amazing and the FS5 or FS5ii are so affordable now and so useable! Fuck this guy!

probably just processing limitations, you can get like 12 bit raw out of the camera with an external recorder but i never bothered with it since it makes the camera alot bulkier.
