DON'T BUY the 13" M1 MacBook Pro

I don’t think most people should buy the 13” M1 MacBook Pro - it’s just not one of my favorite options. The M1 MacBook Pro IS a good laptop, but I can’t recommend it anymore. And that probably doesn’t make sense without more of an explanation but I can only think of 2 reasons why someone might still want to buy it.

I just bought one Apple refurbished less than a week ago for $1099 (it was brand new lol) basically because I wanted the Touch Bar 😅 but also the better battery and gpu over the $200 less refurbished air. The 14 didn't seem worth the extra almost $1000 for my needs personally. I also just like the sleek design better honestly. Very happy with it so far.

I was also thinking about getting the M1 MBP 13 just for the touchbar, upgrading from the despicable scissor-switch 2018. Most of the touchbar is annoying but boy is it convenient and a joy to press „Confirm“, „Delete“ or „Save As…“ on it!!!

I just got the 2020 13" M1 MacBook a couple of months ago and, honestly, I love it. For what I use it for, it's perfect and I haven't had any problems with it at all, and it sure as hell beats my old 2016 MacBook Air that I upgraded from.

I have both the m1 13" and the 14". The 14" is great but I LOVE the 13". The size and weight are perfect (Air too light somehow, 14" too heavy), the Touch Bar is GREAT. Even when you're not using it much, it's an aesthetic pleasure, the icing on the cake. And the design of the 13" is perfect, the perfect laptop shape and size without the wedge shape (maybe practical but not pleasing to look at) - - and for some reason everyone says they love the new all black keyboards, but I think that's just because they're new... the old black on aluminium is much more elegant. Oh yes, the battery life is out of this world. And I like the sound better that the 14" - 14" is too heavy and bassy. It's subjective I know, but for me the 13" is the best laptop ever ... I'm so glad I got a Touch Bar model before they disappear.

When I was buying my MacBook Air last month, I thought of you. Considering I keep my computers for 7-8 years I did it right- 16gb 1TB. “Buy it nice, or buy it twice.” Very true! I’ve barely been able to use it but it works very well! I use it more for work when I’m at home and it really flies with the M1 apps. Intel ones, not as fast. Similar speed to my 2014 i5 MBP.

13 mbp 512 renewed is the BEST cost benefit in early 2024. For 765 you get a 512 SSD, all the better specs of the pro over the airs specifically the thermals for unbelievable price and a computer that still beats M3 mba saving you almost $400 but no one is seen it hahaha

I definitely agree with you about why people still buy the 13" M1 MBP: best battery life, brighter display, touch bar (which I get to try it out for myself), the fan helps maintain performance, and the price is more affordable than the baseline 14" MBP.

My first choice was the MacBook Air but it was unavailable when I was trying to purchase it so I ended up with the Pro and I’m so loving it! The battery life is so good that I don’t have to charge it for 2-3 days. I just hope though that there’s a 14 inch MacBook Pro version with just the regular M1 instead of the M1 Pro but with the same design and screen.

If they would have included all the same upgrades they added this year and still included the Touch Bar, it would’ve been well worth the upgrade. But sense they took out the touch bar, it’s not worth the extra $1000 to upgrade to the pro 14 or 16. Not worth it. Save your money. The 13 inch out runs any pc and will last you many years to come.

Thanks for the great review! I keep hearing that the price difference between the 14 inch and similarly spec'd 13 inch MBP is “only” $300. That is true. But going from the 13 inch base model to 16 gig and 512 SSD is $400. Thus going to the 14 inch from that starting point is $700 which is no small amount for some. If money is not an issue….your point is well taken. But for many of us it is, and the 13 inch 16 Gig and 512 SSD is a good value. Just my $0.02. It's nice to have options.

This is what I have been thinking. That is a good spec for most people and I am planing to get one. I could get a 14” MacBook but I would rather get the 13” and just use the other 700 on a iPad Pro or something else. $700 is not a small Price to upgrade

U can get more storage via many other ways. 1tb SSD is 100$ and 8gb more ram won't do anything unless you have 100 tabs open or trying to play games perhaps ?

I think the point is that you should then save the money and go with the M1 MBA. So, if you only need 8/256, get an M1 MBA and if you need 16/512 get a 14" MBP.

I actually just ordered an M1 13” MacBook Pro BECAUSE of the Touch Bar. I always liked the way it looked and felt when I was at a store and saw it on display. I decided between Air and Pro and went with the Pro mainly because of the Touch Bar but also because I like the bigger trackpad.

Have had my base model 13" M1 MacBook Pro for a few years now and I really have zero complaints. In most situations I really like the Touch Bar for it contextually changing based on what app you're using, and I really haven't missed having dedicated function keys in normal day to day use. Pretty happy with my purchase so far, just really would love the adaptive refresh rate of the 14" and 16" models.

Man, it’s such a hard choice!! I keep going back and forth between the two. 13” has Touch Bar and 1tb for $2800 aud, and the 14” is a better laptop but with no Touch Bar, and only 512gb for $3000 aud. I edit videos, so I need plenty of power but I just can’t decide!!

I just ordered the 13" MBP (with 16GB/512GB). I watched many reviews (of course including many of yours!) but I decided to take a Macbook that sports the fan and beef up the internal RAM and storage. I'm from Europe so the price difference between the 13"MBP I ordered and the new 14" is still even ~700EUR (~800USD). And although I really want the 14" (duh), I decided to keep the 700EUR and use dongles for SD cards and extra ports. The other differences such as extra power I probably won't utilize. I'm a part-time pro photographer.

A straight-forward consideration and decision required here: Given the same price for the MacBook Air M1 or MacBook Pro M1 13.3, each with 8 core cpu/8 core gpu, 16gb ram and 1tb of storage, which would you choose, and why? I have exactly this choice before me, both are space grey - $2000 CAN = approx $1600 USD. Here's my pro list (pun intended) MBAir = 1.Silent, and 2.easily capable of all work tasks: recording voice-overs and multi-tracked music, mainly electric guitar. 3. There's no touch-bar MBPro = 1.slight edge for battery life 2. slightly brighter screen level 3. fan may help to avoid throttling by keeping things cooler - however the negative is the noise which may be taken out at post production, but I'd rather work without concern of such things. 4. There's a touch bar. All points considered, rarely would I be pushing the machine that hard to get the fan going full, except for the occasional 4k video transfer/editing. I seem to be a victim (of my own making to be sure) of analysis paralysis. However, I'm currently using a base-model MB-Air, and so far I like it. I will not have the same opportunity to trail run the MB Pro, as it a private sale. Whew! Alright, now that I've added all my superfluous information, please let me know how you'd manage this decision - all else being equal. Thank you in advance. Have a blessed day. 🙂

IMO the lack of the Touch Bar is a cost cut act on the 2021 MBP’s. I like using it. It’s not like on Windows where the F1 ~ F12 keys are there to be used for non multimedia apps.

I got the M1 MacBook Pro in August 2021 for college and it is the best computer I've ever used for that. Battery lasts a week of classes on one charge, which every Windows PC I've used needed charged daily or multiple times a day. Also works out that this is the fastest laptop I've ever had and the screen is very good. Very bright and much higher quality than the 768 pixel x whatever I've become used to.

The M1 Macbook Pro display has a contrast ratio of 1700:1 compared to less than 1000:1 for the air, in addition to getting 100 nits brighter. It is absolutely not the same display. The 14in MBP in standard SDR regular use content also maxes out at 500 nits, not 1000 nits. The Macbook air weighs 2.8lbs, the 13" MBP weighs just 3lbs, and the 14" weighs 3.5lbs, a significant difference. If the 13" MBP had magsafe it would be the perfect MBP design, and it's the best and last one with the touchbar so get it while you can.

@@edimarjunior5675 The newer laptop will give me lower latency, more plug-ins, higher track count, faster conversions, higher sample rates (without crashing), ability to use my high impedance headphones without external preamp, better speakers for creating songs without needing headphones or monitors all the time, ability to keep updating Logic Pro for years to come and be supported, and much more. So yeah, there are a few things the newer laptop can do. Or at least it can do things my old laptop can do SO much better that, like I said, it’s going to be a game changer for me.

The consensus online seems to favor the Air over the 13” pro but my Air choked on basic apps like Zoom and Teams. I know the pro’s fan is only supposed to benefit after longer periods of use, but I think the Air is limited in even shorter workloads.

Also the future M2 MacBook will probably replace the 13" Pro (rather than the 13" Air) and have the new improved screen, webcam, etc. So if you want the features from the new 14" Pro design but you don't need the power, and you're able to wait, the M2 MacBook will probably be perfect for you.

I got my M1 MacBook Air back in December last year. It's perfectly adequate and does everything I need it to. No issues or shortcomings for how I use it (surfing, music, media, some games, productivity and light video editing). But that's just me. Having said that, I'll be looking forward to the next gen MacBook Air with it's supposed Pro design.

Just bought myself a M1 MBP with 16/512 memories. For $1700. You would think that it’s the wrong choice but in my country the base 14in MBP is $600(not $300 mate) above my M1 models. I need it for school, so I don’t have time for the price to drop, which is usually until the other MBP comes out.

Compared to its price it's much better, In india I got it for 1.5k for 512 8gb but 14 inch base model is 2.5k (16gb, 512gb) 1000 dollar difference so the price difference is crazy. Considering I can get a lot more ports from an adapter for 30 dollars and I use it for coding so screen is more than good enough. Along with 20hr battery life, weight difference is a huge plus for 13 inch. If you are in the US I would assume it will be in amazon for 13 inch,16gb 1tb 1900+tax(2100) vs 14 inch,16gb 1tb 2500(2750)+ tax ie 660 dollars difference. If you think it's worth it them only jump on macbook pro bandwagon else get an iPhone for that money. If you are really a pro get the Greatest 3.5 option or 6k 8tb with maxed out version. If you are a coder you should consider portability and Battery life since single core perfomance is almost identical.

Thank you so much for such a clear and defined comparison. I have been watching comparison videos for the past 2 weeks and trust me yours is the best. I love the Touch Bar and I feel while using MS Office tools the Touch bar would be quite handy which is there only in the 13.3 inch MacBook Pro. Yes the 14 inch looks very attractive because of the display, but do you think I should spend the extra bucks and go for 14 inch and ditch the touch bar? What would you done if you were in my place? My work requires 60% MS Office Tools (Excel, Word and Powerpoint) and 40% web browsing (including videos). Thank you in advance.

Thank you for the kind words. If I already had the 13.3" - I don't think I would upgrade unless work was paying for the laptop. I do like the 14" better, but it's probably going to be an extra $1000 after you sell the 13" (and for what you do, you don't need the processing power).

Now your answer to my previous comment makes me think that I should ditch the 14 inch save some $ and go for the 13.3 as my usage would be 50% for MS Excel, Word and Powerpoint and rest 50% for web browsing. So final recommendation from you Sir (it will be a new one as I don't own any).

If you value battery life, portability a lot and still need a computer that can utilise %100 CPU/GPU power for sustained periods when needed, then M1 MacBook Pro seems like a better deal to me. Because even though it is slower than M1 Pro/Max, it is definitely very fast. Also you can spend the extra 300 bucks for storage. My take is for a musician, a CS student etc; anyone who benefits power and extra battery life but is on a budget should get the M1 MacBook Pro as it provides more value for the cost, which will also probably last an easy 5 years.

The problem is that Apple raised the price of 14" to that of 15.6" used to be. I mean, $2000 for 14"? Just a few years ago, that was the price of $15.6". 14" should be the price of the old 13 3", but Apple is monopoly, so they can change whatever they want.

Do you think a refurb MBP 13” from apple is more worth it? Here in Canada it adds another $200 in savings over the 14, making the gap about $550 CAD between similar spec 13” and 14”. Looking at MBP 13” for the fan. I’m a CS student and I run sustained workloads but 14” is outside my budget NOTE: they don’t have a refurb MBA available with the spec I need, they only have 8gb ram models. So I’d have to buy a new MBA, the refurb MBP is $100 CAD more expensive than a new MBA

@@yogeshcyr31 It is not double the price. The same configs are $1700 vs $2000, the $300 difference is a small price to pay for the upgrade. The only reason why you would buy the 13 inches is if you can find a good discount. As explained in this video, in terms of power, the M1 Air is not much different from the M1 MBP and it is $300 less, it is suitable for first-time laptop users who do not know what they need or light users. For heavy users, the base 14 is a way better choice. Furthermore, if you plan to keep this laptop for 4+ years, 16 ram and 512 ssd are essential.

Recently I was thinking about replacing my MB Pro 13" Early 2015. I read that MacBook Air coming in 2022 will have new colors, probably notch, white bezels, white keyboard, MagSafe port and 1080p camera, so I'll wait until then. I'm planning on getting my first Macbook M1, but I just can't decide which one too get. Unfortunately, the 14" in my country is just too expensive for me to purchase. Compared to the Macbook Air: Battery life is slightly better on the Macbook Pro 13 inch! The fan also helps with performance! The touchbar is a personal choice. Brightness on the Macbook Pro 13 inch is better! The speakers are a little better on the Macbook Pro 13 inch. I was going to get the Macbook Air but I will get the Macbook Pro 13 inch. The 14 inch is too expensive for my needs.

I don't know if you've already decided or gone ahead and bought one, but I just got my MacBook Pro M1 2020 13" a few weeks ago solely for the Touch Bar and my boyfriend got the 14" 2021 model and to be honest, I still love mine! The 14" 2021 model is actually not that much more expensive compared to mine because I upgraded my 13" to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of SSD but to me the deciding factor was literally just the Touch Bar haha. If you're the kind of person who doesn't mind the lack of Touch Bar that much though, I would definitely recommend getting the 14" 2021 model for the better screen, more future-proof, and more powerful performance overall. I would've gotten it without a doubt too had it come with a Touch Bar. 😭 The price tag on that thing is however quite concerning as we can all agree, but I say go big or go home! 😅

My sister has a MacBook Air and I was debating between a 14 inch or the 13 inch MacBook Pro, I ultimately decided to go with a 13 inch MacBook Pro. one is because I previously had the 2017 MacBook Pro with a really special snake skin that was rare so I figured that I get the 13 inch pro with the M1 to transfer the case over plus I’d like to Touch Bar the better battery life, The larger track pad, The fan for cooling, And the pro also has a more tactile feel for the keys than the air. The brightness is actually very noticeable as well. When I’m out in the morning doing my work my pro is always at peak brightness and to top it off, I got a $500 account so it was a no brainer. The purchase is all based on purpose, personal preference.

I watched your video three times! Thanks for making it! I really hope I made the right choice. I bought a used MBR 14’ because of the 14 tum screen size and the HDMI and camera. Then I got 512 GB. I could have bought a new MBA 13’ and upgraded to 16 GB but missed the SSD storage, battery life and the light weight. Oh well, the time will tell if I made the right choice and if I will enjoy MAC (switching from PC) 😊

THIS COMPUTER SUCKSSS!!! DONT BUY IT. At first everyone was telling me not to get the pro but I wanted the pro because it had the Touch Bar but the Touch Bar actually doesn’t help with anything and sometimes it just randomly turns off and you can’t turn it back so you think it’s broken. And then my computer broke three months after having it and we brought it to Apple and they said it was water damage but it’s literally never touched water before and they told me it would cost $1197 to fix...This is just my experience but it sucks.

i bought it for the touchbar, the same brightness as my previous laptop, better battery and the fan (i photo edit on and am looking to learn fcpx over the next year) for most folk i agree with you, but the 13mbp definitely has an audience who will benefit from it over the air and just cant quite afford the m1m and m1p machines. also, my school's promotion made the 13mbp cost only ~400$ after tax while a 14mpb received no discount due to it's pricing being greater than 1400$
