We recently sold our 2001 Ford Escort with over 250,000miles. It is still on the road. I see it around town occasionally. Except for regular oil changes, tires, brakes and other general wear and tear we had no issues. The engine did not use a drop of oil between changes. We bought it new for $9000.

Proud owner of 2012 focus titanium, 177836 miles today. Replaced clutch unit at 165000 ish miles, catalytic converted at 130000 ish miles, and engine/transmission mounts at 120000 ish miles. Very satisfied with the vehicle overall, only other costs were regular maintenance. BTW: the harder you drive it the better the transmission shifts. If it shudders low speed, take it out and do 3-4 stopped WOT to 50 mph runs to reset the clamp force and touch points of the clutches...butter shifts after. And I get almost 40 MPG on long trips and steady high 20's daily. Love my focus.

I have a 2014 Focus. It did break one clutch, and they fixed it after many hours of documentation and complaints. Afterwards, it was good for awhile, no shuddering. Then it came back. Flashed the tcm, and went away only to come back. Then I discovered the ground of the controll modual was the problem. I took off the grounds on both the tcm and battery, and ground off the paint. I put nolox on it and put it back together and reflashed the tcm. No issues now. I think the poor ground connection is the issue.

we have a '17 model, the reason ours is still good is probably because we live in the country and have very little stop and go driving, if you baby it, or floorboard it, it does fine, but certain situations it does the chattering that everyone talks about. we have 125k on it and it's still driving the same as it ever did, it's been a good reliable car. we even have a trailer we use with it to haul everything from riding mowers and motorcycles, and been on many long trips with the 4 x 8 trailer loaded down to almost taking all the travel out of the trailer's suspension and cruising at highway speeds and it just keeps on truckin. over the years we have had a lot of vehicles that were worn out at this amount of miles but this little car shows no signs of dying on us so far

I heard somewhere it was because the TCM isn't grounded properly. If you make sure to scrub off all paint on the grounding points and use some electrically conductive grease, it'll solve all the problems. But I find it hard to believe the engineers at Ford would overlook a simple solution as that and rather settle on buying back the cars instead.

I said no, it's 295k and he was beside himself. Said it ran and drove like a new car. Still uses next to no oil between oil changes. I do synthetic every 7500km. Do about 50/50 highway/city. In almost 4 years of ownership and almost 100k all I've replaced is an alternator($250), coolant reservoir($45) oil pressure switch ($5.35 at the dealer!) And an evap purge valve($65). Speaking out of ignorance of course, (I always do) but it seems to me that the dual clutch transmission is expensive, and bound to be less reliable so you should only buy one if that's what you specifically want, and the only reason you would want one would be if you plan to drive aggressively and take advantage of the razor-sharp shifting. For me, I'm long past the stage of using public roads as a race track. Even if I wasn't I'd rather do it with a manual clutch. I feel it gives me more control. Automatics are only good if you plan to drive like an old lady (which I do, most of the time.) Speaking of which I am so pissed that so many manufacturers have dropped the manual as an option for the 2023 model year. I guess I'll be driving my 2004 Vibe until I get too old to drive and they take my license away.

Well you're probably older than I am and that's fair. I guess we all age out of it. And they're not great transmissions but you're right that they like a little heavier of a foot. Scottie, I watch your videos all the time and like some and disagree with some of your presentations. Having put 125,000 miles on a 2014 Focus with the power shift twin clutch transmission, I had a different experience. I believe that when this transmission is driven aggressively on occasion it works perfectly all the time. I realize that you shouldn’t expect all customers to drive like I do and I suspect you as well. I thought it humorous when you downplayed the acceleration. This car is a little tiger and handles far better than anything else for the money. I found mine to be very quiet at speed and that it delivered 40 mpg at 75mph on fairly level interstate. The engine neither leaked or burned any oil at 7500 mile intervals. I wish mine had been a manual, not because of any problem I had with the automatic, but because, like you, I just prefer to shift with a manual clutch. Made in Mexico, no problems at all. Did you know that MIT surveyed some time ago 85 auto plants worldwide and found that the highest consistent quality came from Ford’s Hermosillo assembly plant in Mexico.

Right-hand drive isn't the wrong side, it's just not the standard in the U.S. since we drive on the right side of the road. The most common application of RHD here is mail delivery, but some cars are RHD simply because they were imported from a country that drives on the left. Definitely awkward for drive thrus and left turns, but perfectly legal.

We purchased a 12 focus new. The clutch was replaced at 30k miles. I found if you drove it like you stole it the transmission was happy. Throttle inputs determined how it shifted. If you tried to soft peddle it that transmission would often get confused. I liked the car...personally the standard transmission would have suited me better...but not wife 😆 Traded in 18 for Escape 2.5L naturally aspirated engine. Happy with the Escape!

It had issues with the transmission, but nowhere near as bad as the Fiesta I drove for a while. I don't know if it was just an issue of a manufacturing defect or because the car was smaller and thus it was more noticeable, but holy hell. After having the clutch replacement. There were no more problems. Like people previously have stated. The handling on this car was great, so fun to drive. This car had great low end torque. Like many others my 2014 focus has a horrible shudder between 1st and 2nd gear. The dealer here is booked out three months on checking transmissions so I have a while to go before they’ll even look at it. Mine is past the warranty for the clutches but still under warranty for the TCM… at least mine is equipped with Sport mode, where the transmission shifts a lot better since it revs higher in that mode. However it still isn’t perfect because when it goes down hill in Sport mode it will downshift for no reason. So now when I drive I keep it in sport mode 90% of the time, then have to go back to Drive mode when coasting down a hill so it doesn’t rev to 5k rpm 💀💀💀 I can’t wait to get rid of this car.

Great video... We're in the process of buying one of these for my daughter. (75k miles 2018). It's throwing a "Shift Fork ""B"" Position Circuit Range/Performance" code that - from what I understand - is a pretty simple fix. Other than that, it drives and shifts fine... My QUESTION is: If the tranny should fail, will Ford still replace the clutch, if you're not the original owner? (Probably a dumb question, I know. But I'm not familiar with these processes). 104,000 miles. Transmission is still working properly as far as I can tell. Just a bad design. It's a 2017 V6 Accord Coupe Touring. Issue speeds are at around 30mph and between 40 and 45. When in traffic, it will keep trying to get into gear 5 or 6, and constantly downshift every time I let up on the gas pedal slightly or touch the brakes. I sometimes have to use sport mode/paddle shifters in slow traffic so it doesn't keep trying to seek between gears.

I bought one in 2012. It was super and we loved it. Averaged close to 40 mpg. My pal bought one the same year. He put about 100,000 miles on it and Ford offered him an extended factory warranty which he bought. I told him they must be confident in the durability to offer him a bumper to bumper on a car with near 100K. Well, wouldn't you know. He had it for another 2 years under extended warranty and it never broke. Turns out he wasted his money. He replaced it with a new Focus in 2017. They do not shift like an automatic. They shift like a manual because they are a geared transmission with no torgue converter. That being said, they shift automatically much better than most people I've redden with who drive a standard. The VW's I drove with dual clutch transmission shifted the same way.

I had to buy one in a pinch last year it was a 2014 for my son going back to college, there were no other used cars in my area with under 110,000 miles. This had 62k and was in great shape, the sales person told me about it, at the time she told me it was getting a new transmission installed at the Ford dealer. Not so lucky she then told me it was getting a computer reset. we have it now for 6 months and so far so good. I have changed the oil which they told me they changed - I don't think so it was so old and dirty looking. I paid 8100 for it which i thought was high for such a troubled vehicle but I was stuck. It gets about 30 miles a gallon, and one thing my son can't stand it the direction of the windshield wipers, why don't engineers leave things alone. I am a Toyota guy, but forget getting one in the price range I had for my son.

Hi Scotty, you prompted me to right this because I guess you did not have many of this type of tranny come your way. If I think what you were talking about in the video for a double clutch, in Europe is called robotized Transmission. Its like you said a normal standard tr. but the shifting is done by a robot. The robot is two electrical motors, one is shifting only up shift, one is shifting only down. I have a Honda 2006 Civic MK8 with this type of tr. drive it 2 years now. Actually, I think is best of both worlds, classic manual tr. in regards to mechanics, at the same time automatic. These two motors do wear out but they are electrical, in Bulgaria, they are repairable for about $80 a piece, not a big deal then replaced by almost any mechanic, and the tr. by it self its a standard tr. with flywheel which is replaced by any mechanic almost. So, really there are many mechanics that can work on them. FYI. By the look at the tr. lever it looks like fully auto to me. Maybe this does not apply to this ford but, anyway the above is true. Thank you.

@@jacktorse2145 I got 4k for it, which I felt wasn’t awful considering it can’t really run without the TCM

I still miss my 2018 Focus ST. That thing had such a sick paint job and interior for the price. It had the leather Recaro seats

I have a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado 2.8 turbodiesel. The transmission shifted crap from the factory..... I switched the crappy gm fuild to Amsoil and it's so much smoother. I now only use Amsoil when I change it.

Only if scamsoil would stop the pyramid schemes and sell directly to stores. Then I’d like to try them.

Man. I had a 2015 eco boost in race red with the body kit and the manual but the ecoboost was the 1 liter 3 cylinder model. One of my favorite slow cars of all time I loved it

In Europe Ford doesn’t really have it’s good reputation anymore, especially with the 1.0 EcoBoost because of their wet timing belt. Lots of workshops here replacing a lot of these engines. It’s a real shame they did this because they are good handling cars.

Do not buy the newer Ford Focus' and Fiesta's, ever, because they are totally garbage and they are very compact. The older Ford Fusion is the best choice for reliability and fuel-efficiency, as well as safety. Thank you very much and have a great weekend.

Guys I have 2015 90k miles. I just did my first “out of warranty” clutch replacement with a tcm recall. I like the car but I don’t want to go through this again.

I'm actually on the lookout for a manual focus from this era. These DCTs cratered the value of them - automatic or not.

Same here I had an automatic one and it was a pos transmission wise. I'd like to buy a manual version now for an extra car.

I have a 16 plate 1.5 manual tuned to 150bhp and 250lb/ft torque free road tax and has done me very well for 5 years. At 80,000miles I'm getting 50mpg ish and fun in the corners.

our 2012 needed the transmission work three times. Repaired twice for free. third cost us..loved the look, quality, handling etc....had to get rid of it though. I would get the manual but never available.

I have my Ford Escort... bought new 2008 and have 172,000 miles on it. Have only replaced radiator otherwise just regular oil change, etc. I want a new car but (only bought Fords since 1976) Ford only sells big vehicles now... very sad. No clue what to buy. Hanging on to my car for now.

2012 has same transmission it's a odd transmission that makes people think it has problems but if it still goes drive it. It's a double clutch automatic transmission I forget how ford explained it to me but it made sense once they said it. Shuddering is very normal with them. I been to dozen shops everyone said nothing wrong with trans you know they have warranty up to 100k miles the transmission dose. Because they have recalls and law suits made ford extend the warranty. But still great car imo I'll take broken down ford over anything else any day any time. I'll buy that car and put half million miles on it might need to replace trans few times but still better than payments in my eyes

I have a 2014 Ford Focus SE with 133k miles, the thing is the most reliable car I have ever had. Easy to service, great fuel economy, dirt cheap to get one used, paid $5k for it, best decision I ever made.

Just go with a stick shift - much simpler once the driver's brain is programmed to use it. As a clutch wears the human brain automatically adapts and when you put in a new clutch the brain adapts to it pretty quickly without any re-programming.
