I use this every week in a cover band. Biggest tip is turn the di out all the way down. Upgrading the ir’s makes a big improvement as well, and I stayed with chop tones, but loaded their mastered ir’s. I run di to front of house and 1/4 inch out with the ir defeated to a Orange pedal baby running a 212 cab on stage. If you get a dongle there is an app for iOS and android you just have to plug your phone in. Having the effects loop and multiple outs is the main reason I use this over everything else on the market. Also, if you don’t want three scenes, there is an option in the settings to just have the foot switch toggle between 1 and 2. Also, when holding down the scene button, besides the standard alt functions, the master volume becomes the di and headphone volume so you don’t need the software to adjust the output volume of the di.

Also using the EQ post with it’s master all the way down aligns the preamp volume knob more to the real thing. NUX wen’t a bit overboard with the max volumes. Another tip, avoid the build in boost pedals if using certain fuzz circuits in the front adds digital noise. Placing the build NG after high gain will make it work much better for stakato riffs.

I gig with the Amp Academy as well. Works fantastic to FOH and profiles a clean amp fronting my analog pedalboard (i.e Vibro King). Get the latest firmware so you have -30db level control on the XLR output and you won’t clip the sound board. Really breathes and react like an amp. Chop Tone Ir’s are a good start but there’s better & more transparent Ir’s out there that makes this pedal shine.

Is there an option to select different amps for different scenes? Or it's used for effects on/off only?

It just turns on fx blocks and ir changes, but same amp.

For me yes, definitely. But, they are quite different in the way they're designed to be used. If I was looking for a distortion pedal to use with a real amp I'd go NSG-5. If I was going direct, or into the power amp of a real amp I'd go NSG-6. That tends to be the way I usually do things. Hope that helps!

I've been trying to find any similar comparison videos. Unfortunately, I already bought Nux Amp Academy. I think you will like the joyo preamp house if you want more amp options. Both sound good, however it looks like joyo will win the highgain contest.

I have the joyo preamp house, it has an effects loop as well as a built-in Impulse Response loaded 4 x 12 cab simulation. You can choose whether to have it either on or off, or switch the output to either the 6.3 jack output or the XLR output. The headphone out has the cab simulation on at all times. All of these high gain amp models would sound a lot more alike if they all went through the same IR.

Nopes they don’t, clipping and their EQ Q’s are not the same. Sure you can tweak until you find a few spots where they sound close to each other but not with the exact same settings from 1-10.

@@JoeBaermann did I write "exactly the same"? I wrote "a lot more alike," which is the objective truth. Much (or most) of the tone comes from the speaker. Therefore, changing the speaker has a way bigger effect than changing the amp (as long as both amps are still high gain).

@@mrcoatsworth429 I don’t disagree with that the speaker has the highest impact on frequency response , still, bass, treble and middle still use different Q values (parametric EQ’s), same with presence and clipping, so you still have to tweak to find the spots where they sound more alike with the same IR or speaker, just like Fricker did.

@@JoeBaermann Yeah, my point is that you can't compare two amps when you change the cab, too. Basic scientific method. You never change two parameters.

@@mrcoatsworth429 It is relative to what you really want to compare. As we can agree on, by changing the amp along with the cab that amp originally came with we compare the stack and not only the difference between the amps. Speakers in those cabs are around 80-85% of the frequencies, little more with mics and IR’s with dependency on which mic that has been used. With the same IR loaded on the unit and the same settings like everything set to noon there is still a significant difference between the high gain amp models, same deal when connected to a poweramp with 2 cabs loaded with neo v-type and v30 speakers, the VH does not sound like the Uber at all, same with the Recti and SLO. The easiest to make sound close by tweaking are the JCM, SLO and Uber, at the JCM’s lower gain settings though, basically making the SLO and Uber sound more like an JCM with difference in the clipping. It can probably be questioned how accurate the models are compared to the real heads, but who cares if they sound good in the mix? There are a few things that I don’t like with the AA, so worked around it since the good things outweight them. I have been through several modellers both with IR as cabsim, the AA is so far the best for a simple 1-2 channel setup. Something more versatile comes at a much higher cost, but even then the amp snapshots don’t always match the real deal.

I have one. I’m an old lifelong tube amp guy, and I get very good full sounds. I hang most on the break up point, and no other pedal I tried did this as good. It’s a great pedal well worth the money and more. I

The heavy tones sounds alright, but yeah these cleans sounds thin as anything... I believe in starting with a great clean tone then building on it with pedals for overdrive/distortion....
