The lowest price Zork Anthology has ever been on Steam is £2.39. The last time it was that price was February 2019. Cheapest since then was £3.11, same as it is in the summer sale now.

@@christopher_martin What OS it is actually very easy. Free legal download of Zork 1,2,3 at infocom-if.org. winfrotz is included. On linux i prefer the terminal app frotz to play them. gargoyle-free is a GUI option. On android 'Hunky Punk' is a good app to play them. I have vids of playthroughs in frotz on my channel of various Infocom games

The terminal app frotz is my favorite way to play the game. gargoyle-free is another Linux option. You just need to use the .z3 or .dat file. Zork 1,2,3 are free legal downloads but with the GOG and Steam Zork Anthology you also get Planetfall which will be doing a playthrough of soon. There is a playthrough of Zork 1 on my channel with link to download Zork 1,2,3. I first played on my Commodore 64 still love these games. Where can we legally get Enchanter?

The issue with old games that used to run in terminal nowadays is that nobody ports them for Linux users because Linux users, well, can still just run them. These are ported for Windows users by Windows devs who don't know what terminal is because they only used shell once. To download more RAM.

Z-code, like all sensible text adventure formats then AND NOW, is a cross-platform bytecode that can run on anything with the proper runtime (called a Z-machine or a Z-code interpreter). It's much like a 40yo Java. No porting is required as multiple interpreters are already available for all manner of old and modern operating systems. But when you think of these games in terms of regular executables, well, you end up with them running in an original DOS interpreter that runs in Dosbox that runs in Wine that runs on Linux instead. Lol

@@monolalia Well, yeah, but on Linux you just call `frotz ZORK1.DAT` in the terminal, no need for abstraction layers. Even if something like that exists for Windows (does it?) and DOSBox isn't needed, my joke still stands because apparently Windows people don't know about it and use DOSBox anyway. 🤷‍♂️

You still have to install frotz (the terminal program). For windows users there is WinFrotz for the old tiltles..gargoyle for new and old

For Android use Son of Hunky Punk. It's in the Google play store free. You put the story file in the appropriate directory on your phone/tablet

I'm not sure what the problem with it using Dosbox is? Having native support is always nice of course, but there's no reason to say someone shouldn't buy a game just because it's run through Dosbox. For resizing, just open the dosbox.conf for the game and set a custom resolution. And of course once you have the data files downloaded, if you want to run it through a different version of Dosbox (perhaps even a port that has modifications you're fond of, or just a frontend that lets you more easily customize things) you can easily do that by just nabbing the games data files from Steam and putting them somewhere that your "normal" non-steam install of Dosbox can find them.

They are all written in z-machine. All you need is a z-machine interpreter. They are available for all platforms. Dosbox is running a DOS Z-machine interpreter. You don't need dosbox for that

The games data files are still valid, they can be used in any way that is supported by moving the data files elsewhere and using third party tools on them.

Well, zork 1, 2, 3 are free legal downloads...I would actually suggest to buy it on steam cause you also get Planetfall.....legally...Planetfall is really good and not legal to download free. It's probably good steam put them in dosbox. .how many people now days know about z machine or frotz?

@@LowSpecLinuxLaptop There *is* something raw and authentic to playing those in a terminal. But Gargoyle's my go-to recommendation for its painless multi-format support (in case someone likes text adventures beyond the historical importance of Zork)

He's wrong, but don't let that stop him from wasting your time. :) Buy the game on steam, it's well optimized. This man is a babbling fool. You can also use alternative launchers and mods without worry via steam.
