It's a fascinatingly terrible metaphor. Like, even without a depth of knowledge of LDS/Mormon history, beliefs, and practices, it's still a truly awful metaphor. I mean, I don't think I can find a way to break it down that makes it make sense, *OR* that makes it support the stated thesis. It's exhausting and disappointing in its commitment to poor reasoning. And I think I'd have to watch his part again to *really* get into it, and I don't think my brain can tolerate such a thorough assault on sense and reason. The tragedy is that some people might be so distracted by tone, conditioning, or coping mechanisms that it might too strongly *resemble* social justice and/or righteous wisdom. So thank you for the breakdown!

This is interesting, I'm in the process of leaving Mormonism and one of the questions I've had is "how can a person find what is really true on all sides without being deceived by their own confirmation bias"/ how can you find out what is true when your brain will always try to reconfirm that whatever story you're telling it is true. Leaving Mormonism is such a wild ride, I mean it's tough because there's so many good people in the church that just have no idea and of course because it's incredibly uncomfortable to try and face opinions or views that oppose your immediate or core beliefs (especially when those beliefs literally orchestrate your entire life and being) so many people would rather stay ignorant and comfortable rather than face what is infront of them and go through the pain to get to the otherside of what's true and what's right or wrong. At the moment I'm in this phase which says "even if the Mormon church is true, it doesn't feel right". I've thought about staying though I feel like I can't stay and keep my integrity together. The idea of staying feels both easy and difficult, easy because you'd be sweeping everything under the rug and you wouldn't have all the pain though difficult because you'd somehow have to throw so much more away, you'd almost have to throw yourself away if you wanted to stay after going through the pain of finding out how hurtful the actions of the leaders have been. Overall at the moment I feel it doesn't really matter whether it's true or not because right now it doesn't feel right, so I can't stay.

Hey there, a couple of things were really helpful to me as I was deconstructing. One is a podcast by Brian McLaren that is all about identifying and dealing with the biases we have. It’s called Learning How to See Clearly. Another is a book by scientific journalist David McRaney. It’s called How Minds Change. Both helped me figure out how to navigate my way forward after losing the church framework for knowing how to be “good” or recognize what’s true. Good luck. It’s not an easy journey to deconstruct and rebuild from Mormonism, but you are definitely not alone.
