One question that might help newer players with this tutorial: Where did you get the small steel tubes for the merge blocks? The survival kit cannot make small tubes and you didn't seem to grind anything down that contained them.
@Splitsie5 жыл бұрын
I was thinking about that on the way in to work this evening, I probably should have mentioned that you'll need the assembler up and running to build all the blocks here due to the need for tubes for the merge block and the gyroscope (though at least that one can be sourced from your thrusters)

Hey Splitsie, love your videos! There's a much easier way to do this though, with no unlocks or welding required! It has to do with how SE treats grids when they split. If you create an appendage to the drop pod which contains more blocks than the drop pod itself, then disconnect it, SE chooses to mark the larger grid as the drop pod, thereby removing the mark from your real drop pod. It's very quick and easy. You can check that you have more than doubled your block count in the terminal before cutting it loose.

It's probably easier to do it in a space respawn pod because you already have full flight control in every direction. If you are single player - which I always am - F10 and plop a pod works for me. :D . Often I setup a world and spawn into a creative game. This allows me to fly around a while and pick a nice looking spot. Once a promising spot is found, I put down a couple of blocks, then use F10 to place my drop pod on them. If everything is looking perfect now, save the game. Then save again with a new name. Exit to the main menu, choose load a game, pick your new save-as game and edit settings and turn it into survival mode. Save again. Reload and you are not playing survival mode, with a level respawn pod in a spot with a nice view. Enjoy. I find this a better, faster option than starting a new game and reloading/respawning myriad times until the random number generator offers you a landing spot with less suckage than usual. And if you really really want to have two drop pods, well plop down two instead of one and play on.

I usually grind down everything but the battery, a few light armor blocks, and a landing gear before turning the drop pod into a ship, at which point you can just add a 10ish block line of armor blocks (or unfinished batteries) and shear it off at the finished battery. There is an easier method. The drop pod is something like 165 small blocks. If you build an easily removed wing of just plain light armor blocks that is more than the blocks that make up the pod, and then cut that wing free from the pod, the "Respawn Pod" tag stays with the bigger half. You don't even have to fully construct the blocks. I just did a 'sprue' of single blocks off one side of my pod and built a big cube, then cut the sprue. The cube, now free and laying on the ground, became the "Respawn Pod" and it's GPS tag changed to "Respawn Pod Last Known Location" You can now grind down the loose blocks and put them away. I just recently did this on the Keen Public server. Did the trick. Try it.
@Splitsie5 жыл бұрын
Yep, that method will work too, wish I'd remembered about it before posting the video as I would have included it as well :P

Tried some multiplayer myself, the KEEN servers are the only ones you can play somewhat decently. The community servers crash all the time, or have very low simulation speeds, it's just impossible to play there. Also, I don't get why we don't have scenario based servers yet. Like, some kind of race, or destruction derby, or epic space battles where you have to kill the other big ship, or something. Even Unreal arena type ones, with a few modded weapons. Do any of those exist and I just don't know?
@LordLuciendar5 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's accurate to say it's merging to a static grid, since it's small ship the only way to do that would be via rotor given that small grids can't be static. It's merging to a second small grid. I'm curious how this impacts one of the primary benefits of the drop pod, that being that it's original blocks don't count towards PCU limit. Does the ship remain non-PCU impacting once merged?
@Splitsie5 жыл бұрын
From what people who know the code much better than me have suggested, it is actually a static grid (due to things the engine does to handle two grids locked together) but even if it's not the critical part is that the grid is stationary, you can't do this with rotors. It counts as normal toward your PCU from what I saw, but I didn't pay any particular attention to that

If the respawn pod gets destroyed does the world reset

Nope, if your respawn location gets destroyed, you'll have to respawn in a new pod but the old stuff will still be there where you left it :) (at least what remains of it) :P

You've never been able to do that for small grid, you can still do it as you always have for large grid though - assuming the option is on for the world settings

Splitsie bro i love your series ideas except for the plain fact that they are too long for me man!! Around 10 minute videos please and I feel you will get a lot more views! Well at least one more :) love space engineers bro!
@janne_kekalainen5 жыл бұрын
That wouldn't work well, one simply can't get anything done in 10 minutes.
@Miiidge5 жыл бұрын
Janne Kekäläinen it would take a lot of editing for this kind of content but just including all the funny parts and key parts for story development i believe it could be done!
@Eisen_Jaeger5 жыл бұрын
@@janne_kekalainen Agreed, 10 minutes isn't content, its a commercial.
@Splitsie5 жыл бұрын
I'm not likely to start making all of my content that short, there are several reasons for that: - as mentioned, achieving something from a story perspective in that amount of time while still having the flow coherent just isn't practical for Space Engineers, at least not without spending more than twice the time I already spend editing, which usually amounts to around 8 hours per video (I don't have that much time) - I get far more people asking for longer than shorter content - while it's true that there are a larger group of people who are after something short and sweet, would this channel feel the same if I were targeting that group rather than the niche I currently fill? I strongly suspect not, and I like my community of people and the feel of this place, I wouldn't want to change that :)
@Miiidge5 жыл бұрын
Splitsie I completely understand! Maybe a good compromise is videos like this one? Bringing back the quick tutorials or the quick tips and tricks! Or who knows a “funniest moments compilation” hahaha just spitballing! Thanks for the response bro
