one lever for forward back. second lever for the differential between the wheel speeds. so when pulled full to either side it does full forward/full back for the tank drive spinning.

I always use the ore detector mode.

Did you consider setting override controls for the wheels on your wheels, so you could slide sideways? like an omniwheel?

My favorite pack is the Heavy Industry pack, as it has my favorite engine to use, the industrial hydrogen thrusters. I just love how they look, and while I don't use them too often, as I mainly keep thrusters inside my ships, if the thrusters are on the outside, and are hydrogen, they are my go to, especially for builds that are meant to be older or less advanced.
