Don‘t dive with Apple Watch Ultra!

Just purchase Apple Care, 4.99 euros per month, extends warranty. Remember the old saying “Two is One and One is None” I always have a backup just in case. But the 4.99 euros for extending the warranty is smart when my AWU cost 999.99 euros here in Eastern Europe.😊

I've used the AWU for over 100 dives so far and have no issues with leakage. I have other issues with some bad design decisions, but that is another story. I always dive with 2 computers. And I had a Shearwater Teric fail on me during a dive (a few months old with maybe 60 dives on it) but thankfully had the Apple Watch. 🙂Does that mean I should tell people not to use the excellent Teric because I got a bad unit? Turns out they got a bunch of bad silver bezels and my unit had one of them. They replaced it and I still dive with the Teric.. with a back up... always. As you said, it is critical piece of safety gear. Any critical piece of safety gear should have a back up.

I’ve had my Ultra 1 for about 2 years. The water feature worked great for the first year and a half. For the last 5 months the Depth App doesn’t activate anymore. Sad watch.

as a diver, you should always have an alternative, always have a back-up. Deeptmeter, Manometer and compass are so important.

Is it possible to use a wireless transmitter to the watch to read tank pressure like other computers?

@@Beards-and-Spears He bought the watch in Oct '22 which means it's still under warranty until Oct '23, longer if he extended it with AppleCare. He has absolutely nothing to lose by going diving with his brand new replacement watch. I can see why the experience would leave him with doubts the quality of the watch, but to me that's all the more reason to dive with it again. That is, to see if it was just a one off defective unit, or if there's an issue with an entire batch of Apple Watch Ultras. These things are designed to be waterproof to 100+ meters, so why not use it? In fact, there's absolutely no point having it if you're a diver and can't use it as a dive computer. It's like refusing to drive your Ferrari because when you drove it the first time it broke down. So while his reason is clear, his reasoning is clearly flawed, and so is yours if you can't see this yourself.

It happened to me in the second dive in Cozumel, it work very well on the first dive.

Been diving in recently a lot and one dive the watch froze and would start the dive. Normally it’s done by clicking action button or when submerged it should start automatically, but after dive I had to hard restart the watch then it worked again. I have 44 dives with ultra and one dive it failed. I just recommend to start the dive on watch before jumping in and it should work fine. Overall I really like the ultra watch for diving and hiking and daily life.

today on my first experience with the watch dive to less then 10 m the watch just died on me!! very unpleasant experience though the diving itself and what’s going to be after the warranty will over!?!?!!

I have just had the same problem, two dives, one at 18m and another at 26m and the watch died on assent.

I’ve just done 18 dives with it over the past 3 weeks in Indonesia in depths up to 35m. The only issue I’m having is syncing dives to the app and it records a dive when I swim in the pool. I think it’s excellent, except for trying to work out the above two matters. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Yeah, recording dives in the pool is a pain. You can set those as ‘ghost’ dives, but I wish they had an option to delete them, even if there was a 12-24 hour delay after which deco info won’t be needed for some kind of safety reasons.

My understanding is once it’s replaced it’s one and done regardless of your apple care subscription. We need to have data on failure rates comparisons between devices to know if this is above an acceptable limit. With that said a closed system computer is far less likely to fail….period. If you love the oceanic + as I do I’ll continue to use it but it will not be my primary computer and continue to pay the price to be on the bleeding edge

A single failure doesn’t mean much without some context. For instance, how does Apple Ultra failure rate compare with Garmin MK2i? I have an early Atomic dive computer and there were many issues with this product. My keypad was replaced under warranty. My Suunto has had problems as well. I dive within recreational limits and could dive with a good waterproof watch if necessary… just another opinion

Bad luck which can happen with any other product as well! Anyway in such a case you have your buddy with you and you can still ascent safely. And generally a backup computer is recommended anyway, regardless which computer you use.

I've been on over 10 dives with this Watch without problems. Maybe charge it next time before you dive and then post a generalization video based on ONE experience with ONE watch. And always get Apple Care+.

if you have a backup, and you use your dive tables you're not at risk, the computer is only there to make it easier. Sophisticated tech fails sometimes, no reason not to buy it.

It's a bummer indeed, but it was just a defective unit. Could happened with any other brand. I use my Apple Watch for swimming, diving, MTB etc. without any worry. I believe it's psychology thing 😊 I would give another chance and dive again, since as you said, you recognize the benefits of the watch and Oceanic+ app, and then you will re-gain the trust.
