Same question as E.A. below, we going in Sept. and this is on the list but we want to try to stay until full dark to see the stars, if we can stand the cold!

You’ll love it! I believe it was close to 5:00. We got there in plenty of time to get a spot. The bad thing is it’ll take awhile to get dark enough to see the stars in complete darkness. Make sure you brings some jackets and some blankets so you’ll be good to go! Oh and just like I told EA…consider picking something up for dinner and picnicking up at the top…that’ll help you pass the time as well! Have fun!

In terms of the parking if it’s full at the top, the park rangers will let you park at the road leading to the observatory below the summit. The walk up from there isn’t as bad.

The drive back down wasn’t bad…some points required some patience though. It’s a little more nerve racking if you get caught behind a very slow driver…then the traffic tends to back up.

Thank you! I believe we made it up there around 5:00…we gave ourselves plenty of time to make sure we grabbed a parking spot. When we were there we saw many people who brought their dinner up with them. If we were to go back we would definitely bring a picnic this time.

Total Tourist Roll. When we went there to witness the sunrise (on acid) in 1967 we were the only people on the entire mountain all day. Zero traffic, no rangers, no pictures, 100% cosmic. Sorry you missed the true magic era.
