I'm italian and just yesterday I ordered a cappuccino at 17:00 in the afternoon, as usual, and for me it has been normal for about 30 years. I live in a mid-size city (that is not a famous "tourist" city, it's not a tourist city at all) and I don't really see this "cappuccino problem" that I find in every video about mistakes to avoid when travelling here in my country.

Plenty of stereotypes or related to the south of the country... For instance 1. You can buy by credit or debit card everywhere ( actually it is getting almost compulsory) I haven't used cash for years 2. Dinner time.. In the north you can have dinner after 6.30 pm, in the north after 8.30/9.00 3. Only small family run shops close for lunch time, shopping centers, supermarkets, big stores are open 7 days a week, from 8/9 am to 8/9 pm. 4. Few people speak English.. Well all young generations, students or educated people can speak English...

Is the cappuccino rule more considered ignorant ( of Italian etiquette ) ? I've been to Italy 5 times since 2014 ... and only ONCE did I encounter a local speaking to his barista friend in local dialect , obviously speaking about me . And yes , it was a cappuccino after dark I ordered . To me I just considered it the same arrogant rudeness american's sometimes display to foreigners . I've NEVER gotten even body language grief from an employee of a cafe for ordering cappuccino after noon . Italians understand tourists have different habits . If anything they just find it amusing . At worst , It's far more forgivable than dressing too casual ( obvious tourist ) , in my opinion . .

America is different that's why you find food any time you want. We have, from the other side of the coin, rules. Milk and coffee isn't good for our stomach after noon. For our culture is weird it's like ordering tap water. We are focused in good eating and drinking experiences that's why we tend to avoid changes in that. Just ask to any Italian you know what are our healthy food habit's do and don't. You will see in large part will be for healthy reasons.
