Thank you A G. I suggest, convalescent equipment for in home use. All can be procured from Thrift stores, yard or estate sales, past personal use or from elder relatives. Equipment such as walkers, canes, crutches, transport chairs, commodes, shower chairs, bed rails, toilet seats designed for handicap use, back and neck braces, wheelchairs, home use hospital beds, grab bars for bathtub and shower use, etc. Anything that could be used for homecare assistance, as hospitals and rehab facilities maybe be closed or greatly limited.

Great points. These items are horribly expensive if bought new, but very affordable in large thrift stores like the Salvation Army.
@heygetoffmylawn15728 ай бұрын
@@muddyshoesgardener …Yep. I have gotten several brand new pieces still in the box or wrapper and unused, at Habitat for Humanity/Restore, given to them as donations. Occasionally, I have back and knee issues and require assistance of a quad cane or walker. These have been of considerable benefit to have. In SHTF, I have built up a stock of convalescent care items that are new, to use as Barter items if need be. Keep safe, Friend.

I agree. When my mom was in hospice, she was given lots of medical supplies for free. They wouldn’t take any of it back after she passed away even if it wasn’t used. So I kept a few things and gave away some things.

We have a firehouse here in our area that loans out medical equipment too. Maybe call your firehouse and see if they do that in your area too.

Great points about the three levels of prepping. So true! My favorite preps are warm foods or comfort foods. My two luxuries are Coffee latte packets and chocolate. Never underestimate the reassurance of something comforting.
@joycedagostino60748 ай бұрын
Good point of having printed material like books if the power is out. Recipes and emergency information won’t help if that information is on the internet and the power is out. Not only getting out of debt but staying out of debt is crucial. Having cash in smaller bills is so smart.

Have a couple propane tanks full at all times. Those Mr Buddy heaters are great but the propane gets used up pretty quickly if you’re running it a lot to stay warm.

My conclusion from my disorganization of important information or recipes was Not to jot them down in a spiral notebook because it it all over the place instead of easy cataloging so now ive got to redo or cant find or its forgotten. Now, im getting a 3 ring binder with tabs and clear protector to tape (or glue) on a sheet & insert in the proper place. It would have saved me so much time. Live & learn.

I made mistakes in buying 6 or more identical cans at one time. When the use by date came it was a problem. I bought lots of Mac & cheese, which I eat almost never. One or two would be better. I have been trying to use up items past date since mid-December, and plan on buying zero food for a while, as 2024 dates loom. I am writing down what I eat to find a realistic list of what I should have.

Biggest.mistake I made was realized yesterday. My mom and sister came out to clean out my kitchen/pantry. They threw out thousands of dollars of food that all expired and went bad. I feel awful about it because I could've bought a generator and a top rated water purification system . Don't make the mistake I made *Also ate something that went bad and got very sick, not a good day

My concern is water for my pets. Don't know what kind of filter to get. They all seem so expensive
@NancyK-cu6xj8 ай бұрын
You can boil tap water to purify. Refilling a gallon bottle at Walmart costs about 48 cents Keep those gallon plastic bottles you buy. Reuse them. Boil at night, let it cool if you boil tap water. Pick up a cheap funnel at Dollar Tree. Keep a half a dozen bottles full at all times. Just tuck them here and there. It's CRITICAL to keep emergency water on hand. Buy a case of water. Myself, I absolutely make sure my pets are going to be taken care of.

Sawyer makes a hose filter for under $40 & they also have mini filter for about $25. Walmart usually has the Sawyer mini filter in the camping section.

Once or twice a week I use grab and go food for lunch...when I am running late or not feeling like cooking for a long time. I just tried the 7 can taco soup and found out I liked it! Most of the ingredients I usually have on hand. I also tried tortilla bowls. and they worked with the soup! No dishes...I only needed a spoon and my hand. They're shelf stable, Ole! Thanks for the idea about the eye dropper for the bleach to make water potable. Here's another what if. What if someone hacks your bank account and your cards are frozen and can't buy food or supplies? If you have them and enough ahead of time, you're fine until you can get your accounts settled.

Ag I'm making a big mistake. I'm shopping for more pleasure then saving. I bought a peppers survival guide. One thing it said was don't buy things you don't need. Spend less of the money you have in the event that somthing happens. Learing to make do with what you have is the core of this guide. For the next couple of months or so no more spending. Lol I buy stuff I really don't need. Ty so much for ure helpful vids. I only get money once a month.

It can be confusing to decide what we really need. I try to be ready for challenges likely to come my way like power outages, winter storms, earthquakes, no running water. Spend your time learning to use the supplies you have stockpiled.

Question: Since bleach expires can a person use alcohol or Vodka instead? The two circumstances I am thinking of are when a person cleans off the top of a mason jar prior to canning or when there is the need to purify water. Any thoughts?
@JA-fg7bi8 ай бұрын
Look into calcium hypochlorite. You can make bleach with it, then use the bleach for water. It is a dry powder for shocking swimming pools. Make sure to research some how to videos and read up to make sure you do it correctly.
@lyndarina98398 ай бұрын
I just paid 12 dollars for a bottle of water preserver that will preserve up to 55 gallons for 5 years. Why mess around with bleach which starts to lose its potency after 6 months? I will boil any water that my pets or I drink during an emergency just as a precaution. During an emergency, or SHTF I sure don’t want to be sick with dysentery or worse.

I have been meaning to ask: Did you take the picture? Was the bear family at your house? Always great advice! Most prepping channels go only hard-core and basics, and would lose it over Chef Boyardee! I don't eat it much at all, but I have them because those I would have here do, and they are ones that we are willing to eat. We used(and use) a sifter in our house to keep the flour fluffy and remove lumps, (no weevils).

Walmart sells stove and butane. You can also order I believe 12ct or more. Delivery to Walmart. DFW, TX. IT DOES SAY TO VENT FOR PROPANE. I LIVE IN SENIOR APT COMPLEX. NO GAS. BUT, IF THINGS GO WRONG.....I WILL USE NO MATTER WHAT. PROPANE IS BETTER IN A HOME. YOU DO NOT HAVE ALL THE FIRE ALARMS AND SPRINKLERS AS THESE APTS DO. BUT, YOU PROBABLY DO NOT WANT TO GRILL OUTSIDE. COOKING FOOD SMELL TRAVELS. YOU DO NOT WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW YOU HAVE FOOD. NO BEARS IN TX. BUT PLENTY 9F COYOTES. THERE WILL BE WILD PACKS OF DOGS PROBABLY, TOO. PEOPLE WILL BE THE PROBLEM.
