Some people, as Americans, get the idea that American borders are “ bad”. The concept is crazy- we go into other states ALL the Time !! Uh ! I have a hard time getting them to understand this : all Countries have Borders. This is not a new thing ! If you arrive in your own boat to a new country : you check in with your papers , to each new country you’ll go to. It’s Their country you will be going into. Visiting, using their resources, Roads and rules need to be acknowledged. Fees paid. You two sharing this video makes this clear. Americans can be very naive until they travel about in the world. 8/2021. I’m impressed with your new truck/home and ability to go longer distances comfortably. I’m subscribed ! 😎

International border crossings have definitely been a point of much confusion and trouble in our own travels as well. Even when you're trying to be diligent it's so hard to get it all right the first try. I could definitely see me using Matt instead of Matthew on a flight and causing trouble. It's a good reminder. At some airport elsewhere in the world (I can't remember which country) I was trying to pay by credit card. On the signature line on the back I'd written "See I.D." instead of signing my name. The lady at the counter, who spoke no English, noticed that "See I.D." didn't match the "Matthew M....." signature that I'd just put on the receipt, and was making a huge issue out of it. No amount of attempting to communicate or showing her my identification documents was helping the resolve the issue until she got a supervisor involved, who spoke enough English to understand what I'd done. Lesson learned: I just sign my darn credit cards now. lol.
@SaltySunriseSailing
@SaltySunriseSailing 4 жыл бұрын
Haha! It's funny how those little things make for a tough time in other countries. I've started to change credit cards to show the same name even after someone at a supermarket in Argentina wouldn't let me pay with a card showing Tim. Thankfully we had others, but something that wouldn't get a second look in one place becomes a big issue in another. Cheers, thanks!

Thanks! We can get by in Spanish pretty well but don't know Portuguese much. We learned a few basics when in Brazil but I would say even if you don't speak the language of wherever you travel you can get by. We were just in Türkiye for a few months and neither of us can speak Turkish. English is not commonly spoken there so sign language and Google translate were our ways of communicating.

In Argentina I think you crossed the Triple Frontera(triple frontier). Ciudad del Este (Paraguay), Puerto iguazu (Argentina) and Foz de iguazu (Brazil). It is the place with the most drug trafficking and smuggling of all kinds of things (Ciudad de Este has practically no taxes), for all this, there are scams everywhere. That's why the complicated crossing, and probably the insurance issue.

I love your content, and recently subscribed. I've done some pretty extensive travelling in the US over the years, but I'm at the point now where I might start going internationally, living out of my SUV. My biggest question is whether it's even possible to do with a dog? My pup is a service animal (I hardly ever use that card, because I feel awkward doing it), but more importantly, I just wouldn't be able to live without her. Would this limit me to staying pretty much in the US? There are certainly plenty of areas in our great country to explore, but if I could go internationally, I'd like the experience. Thanks in advance.
@SaltySunriseSailing
@SaltySunriseSailing Жыл бұрын
You definitely can travel with your dog, but it adds a challenge. We see people traveling with their dogs all the time, but many have had to fly home to get a certain shot or paperwork for the dog. I'd just say to try and make sure you have all of that done before leaving and you should be alright. Don't let it hold you back. Do it. 👊

@SaltySunriseSailing
@SaltySunriseSailing 4 жыл бұрын
I haven't asked anyone about that, but the border agents don't specifically request a "title" just "the vehicle documents" in your case sounds like that would just be the registration. All the agent is really looking for is the VIN, make and model.
@thisbigroadtrip
@thisbigroadtrip 4 жыл бұрын
John - James here form This Big Road Trip. We are from BC, and have to use the single document that is both insurance and registration form. This sucks because the insurance obviously runs out (we have been away just under 2.5 years) and now you have a registration document that is attached to an insurance document that has an expired date on it. There is also the issue of the license plate, that is attached to the insurance too. So, the plates on the vehicle are effectively invalid as well. So ..... we kept the license plates on and use photoshop on a copied insurance document. This is what everyone with a BC plate that is away beyond their insurance expiration does. No-one cares after you leave the US. Your vehicle is still actually registered to you and you buy insurance in the individual countries you travel through. Hope that helps.

Tim replying now because I remember being in the border office while a Canadian in front of me presented his documents. It took a couple of "Si, es mi titulo. Solomente documento en Canada. No otro titulo" etc. Just to drive home to them that this is it, there is no other ownership documents in Canada and they took it. They said that on occasion this happened, but in the end it always works out. Good info from James below BTW.

I remember a few years ago some foreigners travelling in their car got attacked in a small village in the the Peruvian Andes. Is this something you think about? I know the question always comes up, is it safe? And the answer is usually yes. But going into some places is always an unknown, especially being Americans.
@SaltySunriseSailing
@SaltySunriseSailing 4 жыл бұрын
It's for sure something on our minds as we travel, but in our experience everyone is so nice you just can't imagine anyone doing that. I think being in the wrong place at the wrong time can happen, but we try to just trust our gut and not get too overly worried without reasons. In general, I'd say we had better responses than most being Americans. Everyone we met had a great story or dream of going to the USA. Only a few Europeans seemed to treat us differently because we were Americans.
@planetoverland
@planetoverland 4 жыл бұрын
We second Dirt Sunrise's answer. We never had anybody in South or Central America treat us worse when they found out that we were from the United States. We did talk to Germans in a military-looking Unimog who had "No Americano" stenciled on the side - they had gotten rocks thrown at their camp and car in a teeny village in the middle of nowhere, but they thought it was more because they were foreigners in a very foreign-looking vehicle. For us, we never felt unsafe just because we were from the US.

Hi, we are planning to do the same trip. What truck did you use for the trip? What brand do you recommend and year? What are you experience in getting parts when you are driving in not so developed countries? Thanks!
@SaltySunriseSailing
@SaltySunriseSailing 4 жыл бұрын
Have fun! We used our 1995 Toyota Land Cruiser. It has been perfect and in most of the countries they use this truck. In a few it was never sold. In reality we save every brand on the road except for maybe some French cars. There were tons of Fords, Dodges, Mercedes, Toyotas, Nissans etc. Getting parts everywhere takes time. Even for our truck. In "modern" Argentina to get a cap and rotor for our engine was going to take 60-90 days... If ever. So, we figured paying for a flight for a friend to visit and bring parts would, in most cases, be cheaper and easier if we had to have something.

What does it cost to make a trip like this?
@SaltySunriseSailing
@SaltySunriseSailing 2 жыл бұрын
It's really nearly impossible to say. We have seen all budgets on the road so it really depends on how you want to travel. Do you want hotels, paid campsites? How much will you eat out? How much will you drive? Our cost by far is fuel (now more than ever but even before the crazy fuel prices). Tim wants to put together a video dedicated to this question so keep an eye out for that.

Cheers, I have few questions: 1) When driving plenty of hours a day how’s the sleeping and finding places to camp out randomly in unknown places, Did just following iOverlander app or also like common sense etc? 2) How the rig behave after many straight hours of driving south, any major mechanical updates or problems? 3) What about driving in CA and SA with American License plates, dealing with all the normal or crooked polices on the road what is the best way to avoid this kind of situations? Thanks for your information and channel 💯🚙
@SaltySunriseSailing
@SaltySunriseSailing 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Claudio, 1. We like to use IOverlander as a backup only if we can't find our own campsite. We want to find our own spots and because of this we spend several hours each day looking for a spot to camp. It's difficult due to the lack of public land in CA and SA. 2. It's been great. Almost no issues besides replacing some bushings here and there and now we're rebuilding our rear shocks. Check out this video as well. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZfQo5dnrJdpjrM 3. It's always a concern, but we drove past thousands of policia and only had an issue a couple times. Be friendly, but firm. For the most part it wasn't an issue. Cheers! Tim

@SaltySunriseSailing
@SaltySunriseSailing 3 жыл бұрын
In general, no. We met some people traveling with an agreement from the actual owner or documentation from the bank for those that didn't own their vehicle outright. Some Canadian friends had to explain at some borders that they do titles differently there and the Registration is also the title or something. In general, we needed to show it or a good copy at every border, but we met many people who didn't have one so I can't say it's absolutely necessary.
