some people really think when we put on a costume that we are there to serve them, and people just act like we are wild animals and ask us the most uncomfortable questions that they would never (at least I hope) ask regular people on the street. I've heard the opposite of this so many times, where I'll be wearing a costume of a character I LOVE (like Jyn Erso) and people just straight up say "I hate that character, you should cosplay Rey/Leia/etc." and CONTINUE ASKING WHY I WON'T and I'm like .... no????

SAME. I pour my heart into my cosplay gear because I make it myself, so if it's not a character I really love, there's no way I'm gonna put in the work to cosplay said character. Even worse if it's a request by someone trying to sexualize me/said character
@animefan73552 жыл бұрын
Same. I'm a girl, but I like cosplaying male characters because I relate to them more and personally believe I pull them off better than female characters. Thankfully, no one's had a problem with me doing so. I've never had cosplay requests myself, but I can already imagine what it would be like if I ever came face-to-face with one. It's really sad that folks would force their sick desires on others who want nothing to do with them.

Agree with ALL these points! I also think sometimes when people give suggestions they sometimes word it like a request or genuinely think they are giving a suggestion but instead it comes off demanding. "This character made me think of you, I thought you may like this as a cosplay option" = good. "I have a new cosplay for your cosplay list!!" or "You NEED to cosplay this character!!" = getting demanding and into request territory. You don't NEED to cosplay anything you don't want to cosplay. And if you suggest a cosplay don't ever go around telling everyone that a cosplayer did something because YOU suggested it. That gets into a very odd possessive situation towards that cosplayer, who may not have cosplayed it because of your input but because they genuinely liked the character whether you suggested it or not.

The way you describe the argument reminds of one where the roles were reversed somewhat. I take pictures of my cosplay friends, as a hobby. At some point, I decided to be brave and ask random cosplayers instead, because I had a theme for a shoot depending on a location. I asked on a discord server if there were any My Hero Academia cosplayers available for a rooftop shoot in a modern city. The rooftop would be available to the public for a limited time. It involved ordering tickets, time slots and it involved other visitors on the rooftop, so I wanted to get a small group, really 3 cosplayers max. So this guy enters the conversation, saying he doesn't have a My Hero Academia cosplay, but he has a totally unrelated cosplay, from a fantasy setting, which isn't really fitting for a rooftop shoot in a modern city, and he should be included anyway. Even after explaining it might be crowded and I'm looking for a small group so he's not invited, he still insists that he should come along. In the end, I didn't get any good responses from the Discord server, so I just left it and picked out models through Instagram. Cosplayers, don't be the guy that you don't like!

100% everything you just said. And while I don't have the same issue with portraying a villain (most bald characters are villains, and I like the Umbrella Corp. aesthetic) I understand your desire to not. I've definitely seen an uptick in people objectifying cosplayers. I have a few theories on why they've become so much more bold, recently, but the important thing is that everyone that sees this behavior shuts it down, and shuts it down hard.

Of course, the gross implications that are probably behind the insistence are also awful. 😖 I hope I never have to go through something like that.

I get a lot of suggestions and requests and I usually just respond with “Thanks for the suggestion” even if I absolutely hate the character. Saves a lot of nerve cells trying to explain to the idiots how much work goes into each cosplay. If they get too pushy I suggest to commission me and make sure to break down the cost. 1 photoshoot would normally take me ~20 hours to do in prep, shooting and editing + costume + photographer fee so even if you charge min wage the cost is enough to deter weirdos from asking anything further 💀

That's completely understandable. It's always people who don't cosplay that make these requests. On a similar note, I don't like it when people bring up memes involving certain characters during a convention. I understand that they just want to have fun because they find it funny, but it should be consensual. A few years back, the whole meme with Nagito from Danganronpa and Sans from Undertale was very popular and it was pretty much everywhere. I wore my Nagito cosplay to a convention and I had one group of younger cosplayers come up to me asking where Sans was. I get that they were just having fun, but I wasn't a fan of that meme. While that interaction didn't ruin my enjoyment of the cosplay, it did prompt me to temporarily retire the cosplay until the meme's popularity died down. Which did upset me a bit since I really enjoy cosplaying Nagito. I was lucky that it was a more positive interaction. Another cosplayer that I follow had a similar situation happen that didn't end so well due to the other person being an absolute a** about it afterward.

Ive gotten some requests as well, but as a guy cosplaying girls, I've generally just ignored them. My friends sometimes say stuff like that, but thats on a different tone then some random saying stuff like that. It's just wrong to force your preferences on someone, and even if its a good fit, if they say no just accept it 🤷🏻♂️ If you nail it, and they agree, good for you! But that is rare and it should be special. Also, if they agree but they end up not doing it, and they explain why, accept it. The investment is hard enough on themselves.

I still have a slight fear of cosplaying a certain character from my first anime I ever watched I related to her so much growing up and the struggles and successes she went through as a character hit very close to me but I’m afraid of getting judged about it because I know that there are people that have a very strong opinion of this character I know I shouldn’t care about what other people think but its hard and I’ve put off the cosplay for a long time. I agree It’s so rude and disrespectful to give requests to cosplayers when they have put in time, money and effort to make something special I’m in the process of making a dress for Arwen from Lord Of The Rings and so far I’ve put in at least $200 into it and I still have more fabric and things to buy lol but it will be worth it. And i’m the same way I’m not comfortable cosplaying characters that wear sexy or revealing clothes its not something I see myself doing. While this hasn’t happened to me personally *knock on wood* I was trying to find a Hades(doing a female version of him) cosplay cause my friends and I are doing a Disney villain group I’m super excited cause Hercules is one of my all time favorite Disney movies most of the stuff I found I wasn’t comfortable wearing and I ended up just getting his normal outfit. If they are so passionate about a certain character being played, why don't they do it themselves? My own take on cosplaying an antagonist... because that's so opposite of my personality it's fun to pretend to be a villain once in a while... stretch my acting abilities!!! I'm NOT saying you should... you do whatever makes you happy!!! I see it more as paying tribute to a great actress who has brought to life a memorable character!!! 💚

As a cosplayer of a darker skinned persuasion, I've gotten hit with this a few times. It's definitely a, "Really? Are you serious...?" Moment. One time it'd been after I had participated in the masquerade at a con. It legit kind of sucked.

I'm so sorry to hear that, that does suck. 😣

This video is so good at explaining everything, I personally find it hella annoying when people request me to do certain characters (or tell me that I can do others because weight/height/size) but I've never seen it be more prevalent than with my black and poc friends, the shier ammoun of times they get asked to do characters like garnet, tiana, aisha and such is ridiculous! And oh lord forgive them if they do a non poc/black character because "x character isn't black" meanwhile I never get told "x character isn't white" when I'm cosplaying asian characters, nor does ANY other white cosplayer who does anime get the same reaction

You look super cute, don't worry about it. I got a request recently that I did actually accept. But I picked the version of the character and they are covering material costs. I often ask for suggestions, just out of curiosity to see who people want to see me as, but I've never taken one of those seriously. Mostly because they are from shows I've never seen, and I'd like to know a character before cosplaying them

I'm in the same boat with you with the overly revealing cosplays. People should just realize, even outside of cosplay, that no means no. I shouldn't have to explain or defend myself, just respect my answer.

In regards to cosplay request, while i personally wont do request if the character doesn’t vibe with me, i do follow a cosplayer where she does requests but only if the person asking is willing to pay for the costume or for the materials.. lol i always thought that made so much sense in a business stand point

While I didn't know that this was something people actually did, I can unfortunately say I'm not surprised. So sorry you had to deal with such frustrating, entitled people!

"Get the 'enjoyment' out of it." That was really politely said. XD Yeah, there are many p*rves lurking. Honestly, people like that act like they don't know how much time, money and effort it takes to make a cosplay. I remember this one guy following me around at a Con telling me that I have the body type for Margaery Tyrell and he kept insisting(harassing me) that I promise this complete stranger that I will cosplay as this character and he kept asking me(harassing me) to tell him which Cons I would be at this year. He kept showing me these picture of other cosplayers that did sexy versions of of Margaery Tyrell's outfits and pin up pictures and how I should do that. 🤮🤮🤮 I think he got a lot of "enjoyment" out of my obvious discomfort.

Most cosplay requests in my personal experience tend to go all in one direction and it's very uncomfortable. It's one thing if you choose it yourself but...

I don't mind your rant videos... In fact, the world needs more of these videos because some people need to know that they're being rude and creepy and basically objectifying cosplayers. The only people who don't like these videos are those creeps. I just hope that you don't get too upset because of them. Great video!

Imagine having the audacity to tell a cosplayer what they should like and what they should be comfortable with! I can't imagine someone DEMANDING I make something, especially something I am not passionate about. People need to chill out. Had no idea this was even an issue for cosplayers :(
@ReverieCosplay982 жыл бұрын
Random requests for pix of a cosplayer hardly wearing any clothing is much too common and it makes me livid. The response to “no” is usually along the lines of “but other cosplayers do it.” I think no cosplayer regularly on socials is alone in having interactions similar to this at least 1x in their cosplay adventures, sadly.

I once got told "nice ATTEMPT at Sumia (Fire Emblem)". Ruined my whole day, and honestly, I'm still sour about it.
@umbreeunix2 жыл бұрын
You can say it. It is a disregard for the cosplayer's autonomy and consent. It's objectification, fetishization, and absolutely disgusting behavior, and cosplayers you should feel more than entitled to respond with "because I said no." Those folks don't deserve a reasoning beyond that tbh.

i admit i have asked a few fellow cosplayers if they would do a character thats not in their plan and if they say yes, i wanna collect money to support them to get it done while i prepare my own different character from that same place... cause i really want to do a group project XD

See, there are cosplayers that propagate this problem as well, I used to enjoy the cosplayer Jessica Nigri she was absolutely gorgeous and she still is, however her "cosplays" no longer fall under the category of cosplays and she's now literally just dressing in skimpy, what is supposed to look like "cosplay characters". Now people demand that she dresses up in the skimpy outfits and she complies because she knows it makes money on her only fans as well. So there are cosplayers or "cosplayers" that seriously propagate this problem EDIT: for the record you're not being asked to do certain cosplays, you're being asked for fan service. Which is completely and utterly different than cosplay, those who say they don't understand are literally just looking to see your body revealed so they don't have to imagine it. Mostly it's men who think women cosplay for fan service when really women just want to fking cosplay to cosplay. I've been to conventions where even if they did do a fan service for somebody, or a group of somebody's, people always nag them because they didn't reveal enough skin or body parts. No, that is not what cosplay is about. You can be an awesome character that doesn't have to be revealing.

I only cosplayed as my O.C. & that’s the only cosplay I’ve ever done & I’ll most likely won’t cosplay another character or another original character. I’ll stick with my awesome O.C. cosplay.

I just found this channel and thanks for some of the tips. I just looked into it cause I started Cosplaying. And of course I haven’t had this and I guess Nobody will ^^ thanks to beeing not handsome. But I have then a „Request“: do a Cosplay that you’ll feel good and special about, have a Good time with your Friends on a Con and don’t take Numbers, Social Media or a Cameraman into consideration. Is this possible? ☺️

I take cosplay requests but not weird ones, with waifus and all those things I would definitely deny. I like when people comment on my TikTok "You should totally cosplay "name" they would go with your skills so well!"

Can you make a video of characters or archetypes you would like to cosplay? I am very interested :(..
@shariswartz28032 жыл бұрын
If someone "requests" a particular cosplay why don't they cosplay that character themself? Isn't that the main point of cosplay? To show your own enthusiasm for a particular show or character? You cosplay who you like and I'll cosplay who I like and we can just enjoy and RESPECT each other's efforts!!!
