I got a good one for you. I Tarpon fish off a kayak. I'm anchored up 100 yards off a Sarasota beach. A gaggle of scuba divers taking their open water test surround me and my buddy. The divemaster finally shows up and I request he take his divers a little farther down the beach. He tells me he hoped we would move. I explained to him I got up at 4:30 and have been sitting in this line for hours. Jetski's also have no respect!!

Thanks for sharing CA. Being someone on the receiving end of a bit of a scolding, I felt like a kid learning a lesson from Pop. It was very well received and I did learn due to the discussion. I took my licks like a champ and thanked the professional for the lesson, and as a rookie I became more versed on a beautiful fishing experience. Trying to catch the elusive Silver King!

If you get angry hearing this, then you might be doing things wrong. I learned a very long time ago to give other anglers space, whether walking the shore or in a boat. Just don’t do to others what you don’t want them doing to you. The old golden rule applies- treat others the way you want to be treated.

I have yet to go out on my own for tarpon, but have been out with a guide in your area (a friend of yours). I was upfront with him and told him I am there to learn, with the goal of going out on my own boat. While I am absolutely sure he didnt take me to his favorite spots, he did take the time to teach me some of the etiquette and I asked a bunch of questions about what NOT to do. I had an awesome trip and I feel like I am better prepared to hunt tarpon and not stand out as "one of those guys" when I am out there. Great video. Thanks!!!

Fishing curtesy is part of being a responsible fisherman, providing respect for both the fishery you are enjoying and the other fisherman that share the fishery. Thank you for your message and manner in which you share , what I hope will be, influential advice. We all get to enjoy better days, when we all behave better with understanding and respect for each other, and the fish we are seeking. Thank you, again. Good fishing!

Have you videos discussing catching or encountering dangerous fish? How do you handle #Shark #Baracuda #Stingray You know the list where there is a risk of getting maimed or killed if you do something wrong. Mako, hammerhead, Blacktip, Lemon. When do you want to hook a tasty shark, ie mako, but do you really want to hook a hammerhead? How does the beginner and intermediate skipper differ in how they handle the situations? Tne flat boat or V hull or Gheenoe . Is there a technique to pop off? Do you sacrifice artificials? Removing hook.

Thanks for the badly needed video and advice! It was a very well thought out video! It’s gotten to a point where Tarpon fishermen should be tested in the same way that Shark fishermen are tested before getting their license permits. The ones that drive me crazy are the guide jerks that think that because they have a ‘no catch no pay guarantee’ that they are entitled to first consideration regardless of the circumstances and are willing to ruin everybody’s day to make sure they get their paying customers their opportunity! Incredible! I wish you had spent more time with the subject of courtesy when tarpon fishing on the beach. People are constantly climbing all over each other to get their line in the vicinity of a tarpon and don’t care whose line they crossed to do it! There are many parallels with boaters courtesy but the possibility of confrontation, in my opinion, is much greater on the beach simply because of the proximity that many fishermen are to one another. It’s too easy for people to ignore the others because of the intensity of emotions when the moment comes when rolling fish have been spotted! People seem to be totally ignorant regarding the concept of shared space and how to cast to a Tarpon. It’s gotten to a point that the only times worth fishing are first and last light of the day when many fishermen aren’t interested in fishing. Thanks again!

It’s always good to talk about it. It’s always gonna happen. We’ve all done it. Don’t run your motors over their migration routes, poll your way in. Minimize running your trolling motors. Pole your way into your spot. Give me a couple hundred yards and I’ll do the same and we’ll catch more fish.

KZbinrs and social media have destroyed any chance of peace, respect and tranquility on the water, pretty much everywhere. From Flip to the thousands of "look at me" KZbinrs trying to get their faces recognized (kind of including my retired self) it has altered and destroyed what was once a leisurely form of recreation. No one to blame for all of it but ourselves. My reputation was built as a guide in the 80's, 90's and early 2000's, not with edited videos that make everything look phenomenal every second of everyday, but with good old fashioned elbow grease as a guide trying to emulate the guides that I thought were the super pros 40 years ago. It's all just a flat out shit show anymore. But we fish on.

Too many Wally’s out there now. Hardly anyone gets it anymore. The worst are people who sit on spot lock vs actually taking the time to make the right drift. My favorite is when people are spot locked where everyone is dipping crabs in a pass. 🤦🏻‍♂️ that really blows my mind. Let’s not forget the jetskits and credit card captains that just run the fish over. Don’t get me started. Tarpon fishing almost isn’t fun anymore with everything out there not playing by the rules.

Nothings changed huh? I can't remember how many times we responded to guides firing at each other in Boca over jigs and hooks! Is this one of them talks where everyone thinks that they're entitled to be in your space? Where have you been sitting all morning or all afternoon? And they say We have every right to be there in your casting range and you and tell them that there's a whole f---ing ocean out here . And they start arguing the point. With? You. Been? There. Done? That. When I was a kayak fisherman, and they almost capsized my wife in her kayak And they didn't think a Hobie kayak would move that fast when I got between him and my wife He started running his gums, and then he flipped me off. Then he got what he'd never expected

Two comments, one, how is what you said not 90% common sense? That's a rhetorical question. I believe most people know when they are being rude or wrong, but they just don't care. Those are the ones that I want to give a one finger salute, but I know I need to refrain from doing so. Two, the commentary from guides that " this is my office, and I don't come into your office and sit at your desk" is total BS. For one, my office is a private space. The water is public. Moreover, yes, I work elsewhere, and I do so to make enough money to have the time and money to come out here and fish. Just because I don't make that money on the water means nothing. Unless I am breaking etiquette or messing things up for anyone else, be they a guide or a recreational angler, I have just as much right to fish that spot as anyone else. What's funny is that I DO go out of my way to let guides do their job. I respect that they are working. But I have no obligation to them as they seem to think.
