Hey! I'm Alanna - a twenty-something documenting my life as a Canadian living in England.
I share the ups and downs of an expat living abroad and what it's really like living in the UK. It's not always easy, but there's been so many wonderful experiences, too. I post a KZbin video every Tuesday and an additional video every Saturday on my Patreon account. I also livestream every Wednesday and Sunday at 6:30pm GMT on Twitch.

That shot as you left Whitstable station was very familiar. Almost 40 years ago that metal folding door in the building near the corner of the road was a place called “Days garage”, there was a lovely big black dog that used to curled up outside most of the times we went there. The Estate Agent over the road used to be a delicatessen where used to get Rhum Babas and other cakes. A lovely town.

What a great video! I passed through Whitstable last year while I was on bike tour. It had a lovely peaceful vibe. The reason so many people are getting food poisoning from the oysters is because of Southern Water illegally dumping raw sewage into the sea simply to save money: one of those places being Swalecliffe, very near to Whitstable. I saw an article about this last month. The fish and chips look nice! I'm glad you enjoyed your visit. I'm wondering whether you've been to the Isle of Sheppey. I went there too.

It's certainly changed from my idyllic childhood in S E London where like many people from that area we left our Council accommodation and spent all Summer at our Caravan in Seasalter next to Whitstable but it really was an Olde World High Street with all individual shops and certainly no Iceland or Charity Shops for better or worse and they had the Annual Carnival where the streets were packed. Seems a different world from those 1960s and a lifetime away. :)

@@Isleofskye You're right that the nature of the shops have totally changed but luckily not so many of the actual buildings are that new, at least not in Alanna's shots. Don't get me started on caravan holidays - the only affordable way to get a holiday until I was about 10 years old!

My Parents were the 3rd Caravan on a site called "Waldens" on the Seafront between Seasalter and Graveney/Faversham after the War. They used to go Hop Picking like many working-class Londoners. Our next site was a massive field with it's own Pub and only 12 caravans ( It now had 70 Mobile Homes) and Lady made Toffee Apples all day and it was next to the woods. Then we were the 3rd and 4th on a brand new site just 2 miles from Whitstable and our 2 caravans had a large area in the corner. Nowadays they are all crammed together. It was a 6 Berth with no water but it did not matter and we were there every weekend from the end of May, weather permitting and all 7 weeks of the summer school holidays (Dad only had 2 weeks and joined us then ). It was idyllic with Radio Caroline on but we had to come off in 1970 as they wanted us to get a newer caravan. 51 years on and I only live 45 minutes drive away in Bexley and I would have loved to have had a little bolthole there because although I have flown around 34 times, I hate it. :)

@@Isleofskye I can, as a local (my dads side of family has lived in faversham since time immemorial while my mums side in Kent generally since 1920s) tell you that many shops in whitstable are independent shops but they are a bit posh and tend to cater to posh people coming from London :)

Post War: " Wardens of Seasalter" near The Sportsman Pub. THen from The Mid 1950's "The Four Horseshoes" in Graveney and then "The Applegarth " at Seasalter Lane from 1062-1970 ? Traditionally, "The 'R' Rule" says that oysters should only be eaten when there's an R in the month, (i.e. between September and April) since the warmer months of May through to August are when the 'Red Tides' occur, that cause much higher than normal bacteria levels in the sea, so you can never be sure how edible and safely digestible the oysters really are. Basically if people have been going down with vomiting and diarrhoea after eating oysters recently, then they have only themselves to blame. (I would add to that: personally I believe that if you eat anything that a) looks like snot, b) is raw and c) is most probably alive when you eat it, then you ought to be more suprised if you DON'T get vomiting and diarrhoea!)

Oysters: Ancient tradition "only eat oysters in months whose name contains the letter 'r' '. This rule is because warmer weather causes more bacteria, etc to grow. September to April are the cooler months in northern hemisphere, July in UK has been hotter than usual, therefore the oysters (& shellfish, crustaceans) are not ideal. Strangely, as I'm in southern hemisphere, our rule in Sydney, Australia happens to be the opposite, we should avoid oysters in the months containing the letter 'r' !!! Love your work - I am so happy enjoying armchair travel with the vlogggers in UK, taking bus rides, London & countryside walks, narrowboat rides, chats with you & lots of others, thanks so much.

I visited Deal castle on a school trip many years ago. Our teachers arranged a night out for us at a nightclub in Margate. We were the only people there and one of the acts was a drag artist. Me and my mates were arguing about whether he was male or female and our suspicions were confirmed when we saw him go into the gents. The experience was a bit confusing for us as we were ten at the time. The village of Tyneham in Dorset is worth a visit. It was evacuated because the Allies wanted to prepare for D-day in that area and the villagers were promised the right to return after the war. That promise wasn't kept and what you see is a ghost town.

@@grahamsibbert2412 Going roughly from where I estimate you live, there are beaches closer to you than the ones you mention. King's Lynn for one, possibly Clacton too but I'm not so sure on that one. I live a little north of you in middle England and it's only two hours to Skegness. I suspect that might also be closer for you but obviously it depends on your exact location, which I don't expect you to divulge. The furthest settlement from a UK coast is fairly closely to my location. That's 70 miles from a coast. I'll give you that coast doesn't always equal beach but a beach isn't going to be far away. Even so, none of the times/distances mentioned are that far when compared to some other countries, especially Alanna's origin of Canada. :-)

@@grahamsibbert2412 I have read that there is nowhere in England that is more than 80 miles from the sea. Whether it takes 5 hours or 2 is relevant but consider for some, the seaside could be thousands of miles away & they never experience it in their lives !

Elwaves. You really need to check your maps. Kings Lynn is not a coastal town with North Sea beach’s, it’s just on the mouth of the river Gt Ouse. Ok so it’s tidal and like London the Thames is tidal which means that any where the waters are tidal they are classed as coastal, this makes London a coast town right the way west inland to Teddington. A small town in Kent on the Medway named Wateringbury is tidal also so that is a coastal village. No. Where I live we are way beyond 80 miles from the coast. Clacton is exactly 119 miles away.

Did you “push the boat out” and try any other traditional British seaside delicacies? Cockles, jellied eels, winkles, whelks, Crab, to name a few.
@Thurgosh_OG
@Thurgosh_OG 3 жыл бұрын
Several of those are not 'traditional British delicacies'. Jellied eels for example are only a SE England thing and mainly disliked. The others vary in availability depending on the coast/place visited.
@ecowomble1781
@ecowomble1781 3 жыл бұрын
@@Thurgosh_OG I believe you are confusing regional and British. If something is regional within Britain it can certainly be said to be British. Whether something is disliked or not is subjective, if you don’t like something you don’t buy it yet jellied eels have been sold for a couple of Centuries or more. All of the afore mentioned seafoods have been eaten for centuries in the British Isles and are more British than Tea, Scouse, Polo , The Windsor’s, and yes even Fish and chips. What are some of your favourite seaside foods? Have a great day.

Nearby to where Alanna got her Fish 'n' Chips, is a bench that Peter Cushing bought in memory of his wife. It's at a spot where they used to sit and just look out to sea and is now officially named "Cushing's View". Also, up the High Street is a Wetherspoons that was an old cinema back in the day; it's called "The Peter Cushing".

@@AdventuresAndNaps I enjoyed that but b4 people started going abroad in The 1960's it used to be packed solid with holidaymakers, mostly from South London and mostly staying caravans which were massive Business in those days but, sadly, most English Southern Coastal Towns have fallen victim to the natural desire to "guarantee" the sun in Spain, Italy, Portugal etc... That High Street was ALL individual shops in The 1960's with 4 local Butcher Shops and you could buy everything Pre Supermarkets.

You would be amazed how many S E Londoners moved from Inner London in The 1970's/1980's and now have taken another step to Whitstable and the surrounding coastal towns. :)
