Oh we have lots of these in northern Ontario Canada. I made the mistake of eating pokeweed when I was 7 years old at reccess, since it was growing on the fence. It dries your mouth out, and you feel as though you cannot swallow. Your whole mouth and throat will feel crunchy. I went to the hospital and was there for two days. Horrid.

Extra lily of the valley top tip... If foraging for wild garlic (ramsons/ramps) in Spring, learn to differentiate wild garlic leaves from toxic lily of the valley leaves. Very similar looking.

As a child my friend and nextdoor neighbor had Yew bushes lining their sidewalk. We used to throw the berries at each other. Surprised none of us ever ate one. Thank you Alfie!

The yew berries are edible but they're surrounded by the highly poisonous rest of the tree. I have eaten them many times with no ill effects. Thing is, you have a highly toxic seed in your mouth and eating it accidentally won't kill you but give you a stomach ache.

The reddish part that grows around the yew seed is called the 'aril', and it it non toxic and perfectly safe to eat, assuming the (!very poisonous!) seed inside is discarded before ingesting. It's the only edible part of the Yew plant

The Yew, Taxus baccata isn't poisonous only the seed is. The berry it self is even a vitamin bomb! Always avoid biting the seed inside.

I was about to post the same- fleshy red aril edible, seed inside deadly. Same with Podocarpus, except the seed is below the aril, NOT inside, and Podocarpus arils are dark purple.

I would only add that although Yew is very poisinous the only not poisinus and actually edible part of the plant is the soft meat of the berry. One must be extreamly carefull to remove the seeds prior to ingesting but yew berries can be eaten if handeled correctly. It also makes a great jelly

A note on pokeweed - it's leaves are often prepared as poke salad in the Southern US, but the leaves are preped by washing and boiling/blanching. This makes the salad generally edible, but some may people still get stomach upset. Don't eat the berries though, that generally won't end well.

Good info as always. Like others say yew berry flesh is edible. I’ve tried them. Very sweet. Spit the seed out. All other parts of yew are toxic.

Pokeweed info: you have partial information here so let me add. Ripe berries can be used to get rid of intestinal parasites in humans and livestock. It is mildly toxic but is fine to consume in small quantities (see Pokeweed Berry Pie in the South). All parts of this plant are toxic and nothing beyond ripe berries should be consumed. From least toxic to most: Ripe berry, unripe berry, leaf, stem, root (super toxic). These list videos, where they cram a ton of list points, tend to omit important or interesting info. ALWAYS do your research before consuming wild plants.

my poor mom had to have nerves of steel - she knew if she told 4-year-old me not to eat poke berries, I would. they were all over the woods where we lived. Luckily they aren't poisonous to the skin, as I proved timing again by using their vivid magenta juice to stain my hands or paint my face. When I was older she told me how poisonous they were! During your introduction I was watching to see when they would show up, and there they were. :-)

I saw some dingleberries whilst camping with friends. I don’t think they’re poisonous but I definitely wouldn’t recommend eating them.
