Don't get a Forward-facing Car Seat Stuck on a Plane!

This video shows how it is possible to get some forward facing car seats stuck on an airplane and how to make sure that you install the car seat so that it does not get stuck!
It is a simple trick that can make all the difference.
The following car seats have a closed forward-facing belt path and will require this trick:

This only works if the airline seat reclines. I once used this trick to install a car seat on an ERJ with 2 seats on one side and 1 on the other, so small plane. At the end of the flight, I discovered that the airline seat didn't recline. I could not reach far enough between the airline seat and the car seat to lift the buckle tab. Using a seat belt extender and adjusting it so one buckle is off to the side in easy reach is a more fool-proof solution.

If the seat back doesn't recline, there is often a gap between the lower part of the car seat and the airplane seat where you can sneak your hands in to unbuckle the seat belt. The seat belt extender often leaves many car seats too loose as you have too much webbing that can't get tight enough.

I got a diono rainier stuck rear facing, I couldn't use a seat belt extender because the belt path is so short that it wouldnt tighten enough. So since it's a closed belt path I had no way to get it out. I ended up pushing the loose end of the belt little by little loosening it. We were the last people on the plane and I felt so bad for the flight attendants waiting on us.

What car seats are approved for airline use?

Most with a harness. Check for an FAA approval sticker (or check the manufacturer's website). For US travel the seat requires an FAA approval label be affixed. Backless boosters or boosters without 5-point harnesses cannot be approved.
