Your channel is a breath of fresh air. Most of youtubers can't stop explaining me how great and fast M1 will be for video editing, sound recording and other things. Seems like producing KZbin videos is their full-time job and they can't imagine somebody can use a Mac for programming, study etc. Finally somebody reviews M1s from perspective of a REAL user, not KZbin blogger. So you get a like, subscription and huge respect from my side, Alexander! 👍😀

My Acer Swift 3 which is around 50% cheaper than MacBook Pro is just a bit slower when running my softwares. My mac flow for following - xcode builds for react native and swift - aws (nodejs) npm - max battery for coding outside (around 4-6 hours would be best) getting 8-12 hours - some photoshop - lots of tabs (20-40) - ios simulator - android simulator All gets done on m1 macbook air. Swap memory works great around 4-8 gb with 1-2 gb ram free. I had a hackintosh with 24gb RAM , on this kind of flow makes it around 16-20 gb with still 3-6 gb in swap. So they are still using swap that aggressively. I wanted a machine with max battery life and this seems best option in all laptop comparison chart.

I use it for C, golang, and nodejs development. I run CLion or GoLang, two VSCode instances, discord, and several other apps all at once and my M1 doesn't give two Fs about the 8 gigs of ram. It manages and swaps things out almost instantly. This thing is amazing and I don't regret it one bit.

In terms of raw numbers, the ThinkPads shouldn't be able to put up a fight, really. That being said, I've used a Macbook Pro for development (professionally) and coming from Linux it was an incredibly stifling environment. Eventually it came to the point where I picked up an old T440 that was obviously many, many years older than the Macbook simply to get away from macOS. Out of my own pocket, for work. I did hold out for a year, so you can't say I didn't at least give it a good go. 😅 I still used the Mac via SSH though, just for its processing power. Wow, I totally respect the video, and generally what you're doing here on this channel. You're kind of 1 % of software engineer / tech-review youTubers... who really tell the truth. Other 99 % are just mumbling, having no idea how ie. software development looks like (external displays, docker everywhere, projects start and end - not everytime you can choose them, so compatibility with widest possible tools is critical, some projects use some very old libraries, so deprecated that you cannot update it (ie. some AI python projects)). There is also another part of youTubers - "tech-gadget celebrity youTubers" (the more subscribers, the higher chance that he has no idea what he is talking about or the "review" tells only obvious things). 99 % their review looks like this: "open final cut pro. render youTube video. omg it's so fast. Mac M1 is so pro, and for all pros" (having no idea that majority of pro / power user really needs to have computer that it's "all rounder" - having multiple displays working, having lots of ram, using all kind of I/O a lot. But yea, you won't hear any "issues" from these KZbinrs - they ran Final Cut Pro and it was smooth. That';s their the whole review ;) Mac M1 itself is very nice computer, overall, it changed the game, and pushed laptopt waaay forward - sooner or later I'll switch to it (because price / performance ratio is indeed great) but i hate that youTubers are simply not doing the reviews - they're just uploading the video about them working with final cut pro ;) No one mentioned that at the beginning Big Sur was soo buggy, that definitely, it wasn't a computer for professional work. No big youTuber ever mentioned that ie. if your mac goes to sleep then you had issues to log in again (keyboard in laptop was not working), or issue with motherboards being fried (goodbye your soldered data ;) ) because of some third party dongles / adapters, or the pretty wide known issue with external displays, or even that excessive use of SSD. For them, everything was "smooth" ;) Yes, some or even majority of people didn't have any of this issues, but few of my colleagues at work, at software house had and then it turned out that there were actually a lot of people on the Internet having similar issues. But all I heard at that point of time is that "M1 is so great" (because it runs smoothly final cut pro and youtuber can create a video faster ;) ) The "review" big tech youTubers are doing are so generic that it's not even a review - it's just more like a commercial, with low information value (or even none). Your reviews are honest, balanced

One important consideration that Apple generally lacks: repairability when the hardware fails. I've had a lot of issues with recent MacBooks and have finally made the decision to jump off the platform due to those issues. Their hostility to right to repair gives me serious pause to ever coming back.

Totally understand how you feel. But hey, it's all about money and non-replaceable hardware means higher profit for the stakeholders. Great review! Considering M1 only for the battery life. Since 2005 all of my work has been done on remote machines long before the "cloud" was a reality. Up until 2020 i had never spent more than $150 for a laptop. Developing with Linux for Linux has always had this perc. It is rare i am limited to the resources on a single machine. I tried working one month with just a raspberry pi 4 remote connected to an AMD Epyc 32 core server with dual GPUs for ML development. The setup worked great aside from many daily annoyances that come using raspberry pi. The M1 is overkill for me though it will offer more stability and local processing power over the pi4. Not every developer can work this way. those that can will love the M1.

How is it so far? I have an Asus Vivobook S14 with Ryzen 5 4500U (6 cores 6 threads), 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD for $700, which is around half as much as a base model M1 Macbook Air in my country. The CPU is very fast, especially for the price of the laptop, and efficient (6-9 hours on battery depending on the use case) and there is plenty of memory to run VMs, various development programs and a dozen Chromium tabs without ever using swap memory (I have it turned off completely). The cooling on my laptop is also very good and it only starts being audible when I force it to boost to a high TDP (25+W) for prolonged periods for the most demanding tasks, never going above 90C, especially now that I have improved the cooling by repasting the laptop (it does not even void your warranty on Vivobook S14) and installing a thermal pad to transfer some heat onto a metal backplate. Though I never need to push it past 22W or 80C, it's fast enough for pretty much all tasks. There was also an option to get an 8 core Ryzen 7 model for around $100 more, but it came with a Windows license which costs quite a lot, considering that you would normally install a custom optimized Windows version on a new system right away, as well as a proper Linux distro. I feel like this is pretty much the best kind of investment that I made, because unlike all M1 products, it can be easily fixed and the storage (but not the RAM, 14" laptops generally do not allow upgrading it) can be upgraded right out of the box. I've heard numerous reports that Apple laptops generally work for only 3-4 years before something very expensive breaks. You won't be able to repair the M1 in any way without buying a new logic board because of that. In contrast, Asus laptops generally work for a really long time, often more than 10 years given proper maintenance, like repasting the CPU yearly. The number one reason behind all CPU deaths is overheating, and M1 Air laptops usually run very hot due to the fanless design, but you can probably limit it to start throttling before hitting more than 90C. 7nm and especially 5nm CPUs also degrade much faster when they run at more than 85C for prolonged periods of time, so you should be on the lookout for that, upgrade your cooling with thermal pads and limit the CPU to 80C. Take care

The simple answer is : first of all serious windows people don’t even buy m1 macbook air / pro. Processes, handling of files, apps on mac os are cumbersome for no god damn reason . On top of that any experiment with apps can lead to irreversible memory wastage. No serious software is free on mac os. Please tattoo this on your wrist. Be it parallel via which u wanna run windows or the windows itself. No key generator works here in that case. If windows people still wanna flaunt the apple logo please go for mac with intel and bootcamp it. Oh by windows people I didn’t mean people who do video editing only. I meant some serious work on windows. Like running a tfs server from it, setting up a sql server . You name it. On top of that bootcamp helps to allocate entire RAM on windows os , not like parallel where you need to decide how much RAM to allocate to windows, so with M1 you will end up buying a minimum of 16 gb of RAM version vs minimum of 8gb version of INTEL macs in this regards. What common in tech reviews are like very few youtuber got the guts to speak truth rather than nurturing the fake apple impression. It’s unfortunate but a fact. Peace 🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳

Regarding FOMO feeling, there are 2 bounds: getting a cheap entry level lineup or getting a very powerful one (and expensive if the workflow justifies it) But anything in the middle is subject to performance/dollar metrics. But then some workflow are not M1 compliant so it becomes apples vs oranges if we dare to say... Form factor wise a Razer Blade 14 is wayyy much more polyvalent for the average folks. Maybe some workflow could benefit from a unified memory with 64GB (the playstation of ML in a way)... So the question is more about hype-factor/niche-efficiency metrics. One thing is sure, battery-autonomy is excellent (although VMs are ressource hungry beasts)
