Today is the last port day of our British Isles Cruise on Norwegian Dawn and we lucked up and got an extra port in Ireland since there were strikes happening in France and that port was canceled. So today we are in Cork.
Once we get into town, as the port is about 35 minutes away, we head straight to The English Market for lunch. Even though the name is English, this is a very Irish Market! This place is fantastic! There are food stalls for locals to come and by 'groceries' such as a butcher, fishmonger, etc and stalls where you can have a great coffee, try some delectable cheeses, and so much more. After snacking around a bit, we head upstairs to the cafe for lunch. We both go traditional Irish with a cheese and onion pie and a bacon and cheese toastie.... yum!
Now to walk off all that food, we trek (what feels like straight up a hill) to the Cork City Gaol (jail). This was an active prison for 100 years but looks like a castle. Such an interesting place! The history is fascinating and seeing how men, women AND children were imprisoned... and often for small crimes was very sad. This is definitely a place I would not have wanted to be!
We end our day in an Irish pub... well actually a local Irish brewery. The perfect ending to this day. Now, back on the ship to end this cruise.

As someone mentioned in the notes below, be sure you stick around Cobh next time. Literally one of if not our favorite little towns we have ever been to, great place to hang out and have a pint of Murphys and listen to some music. Also wondering where Steve got his hat, I bought the exact same one at St Patricks church last year. Great video as always!

You guys did an amazing job with the video and informative presentation as always, you always presented professionalism high spirits, and enjoyment of your show, I am always looking forward to following your trip. Somewhere in Ireland is my part ancestral homeland my great-grandfather left with 4 brothers for America and split up all over the USA. I'm still learning and investigating the brother's hometown.

This was so interesting, thank you! My Grandfathers parents were from County Mayo and County Cork, respectively. My #1 bucket list trip will be a week in Ireland.

I’m glad you got to see a bit of my home town. Next time you dock at the cruise terminal in Cobh, consider spending the day there and exploring Spike Island as well. There is a lot of history in Cobh! And if you do go into Cork, consider taking the train. It’s much cheaper than a taxi and the station is next to the cruise terminal.

Because this was a last minute change we didn’t get to dock on Cobh but were at the industrial port. We took the free shuttle bus back, it was nice that they arranged them for us.

The prison cell reminded me of an interior room on the Carnival Radiance. Hey that’s what we booked for January. The interior room, not the prison.

Even into the late 90's and early 2000's many English Prisons were much the same as Victorian and Napoleonic times and with slopping out still, but with 3 or more times the population number. No one was popular with their cellmates (up to 4 in a cell) if they did a number two in the bucket! Banged up for 20 hours a day. 10 days spent as a Civil Prisoner in a Napoleonic era Prison.

Your video is EXCELLENT, world-class and no complaints about your video. I married Irish and when I migrate to Europe, I HAVE to start in Ireland. I don´t want to, to be honest. My heart and soul are in Spain. My comment is away from the ¨oh, everything is so wonderful!¨ obligatory horsesht way too many people spew about Cork and Ireland. Cork is not a friendly little village. The people are mean, rude, arrogant, busy and this city is not geared for tourists. The traffic is the worst in Ireland. The English Market is a smelly grocery store and nothing else. Our hotel gave us two €20 vouchers to spend there and, I ended up giving mine away for a €10 hat that is poorly made. However, if you get away from S. Mall street and all the crappy overpriced, boring traps, Cork people are more relaxed away from the desperation of traffic and work. I would recommend skipping ALL the tourist traps and churches and all that garbage and getting out of downtown. It´s better out there.
