Why would you bother doing all this rigmarole she's describing?!?!? You don't have to purchase any add ons so if the dealership attempts to push you into it tell them to fvck off. And if they insist then have the balls to walk. You don't need to look at a contract with fine print to know that you don't need to. The approach she describes is beyond weak - just man up and put your foot down.

For years I’ve told the salesman to tell finance that I want zero discussion about extras or add on’s. IF finance goes down that road, I walk. Period. I expect to be in and out of finance in 15 minutes or less or I walk. This has worked perfectly for me on my last 6 car/truck purchases. I also tell the salesman that I want zero dealership branding on my vehicle when I pick it up. No stickers, license plate frames, branded mud flaps, etc. I’m not going to be a rolling billboard for your dealership. This has worked every time as well.

I’m in F&I and I do believe in a few of the products but I no matter what have to offer you the products to protect myself. If you’re the only one I didn’t offer GAP to and you total out your car and your insurance doesn’t pay off the loan you could get a lawyer involved and say you were never offered it. I would have you sign a settlement disclosure saying I offered you declined and are assuming risk. If you get some of the products at a good price they are always usually worth it. Most of them are pro-rated also…. I always recommend gap if you’re not putting money down. I personally get a service contract on my vehicles too with 0 deductible so I don’t have to worry about a mechanics labor rate or mark up on parts. Most places mark up the service contracts they aren’t usually worth it and it gives dealerships a bad name. There are dealerships out there that are ethical and put customer service and satisfaction above making the most off of customers because the manufacturers give kick backs for high customer satisfaction score and you get repeat business forever.

I have no issue with a dealer sticker on the car as long as that dealer has respected me and a family member I help with a purchase. The dealer that has worked several deals with my parents even allows them to borrow the vehicle over night to test and to bring back. It was interesting that my Dad had always been the negotiator on vehicles until the last two - both of which I negotiated for him. He could not believe how easily things worked and we didn't have to fight with the salesman. After the salesman had been through me and my Mom's deal, the other two deals he earned were smooth and the salesman knew we were legit buyers and we weren't out to screw them. Interestingly, operating from trust earned smooth transactions, no negotiations beyond what we were willing to pay, and mutual trust.

The last car I brought from a stealership I had already pre-negotiated the price via email and I had a record of it. I drove over an hour to the dealership which was several towns away and when I went in to the finance office the vehicle was $100 more than I had negotiated. I went through every line item I wasn't charged anymore for anything it was just $100 more. So now the salesman is completely MIA and I'm dealing with this young kid in a cheap tie who's angry that he has to go back and reprint everything. He literally said to me "it's only a hundred bucks." So I very kindly replied, "give me a hundred bucks and you don't have to go back and redo the paperwork." Needless to say that hundred bucks was much more valuable when it was coming out of his pocket. I didn't walk out. I made them go redo the paperwork and get it to the correct price.

Good for you! Similar thing happened to me last Friday. The salesman and I had been texting back and forth the night before and I asked for a number out the door and he gave it to me. When I went in for the deal he had me sign a piece of paper that showed a 14 day payoff of my trade instead of the 10 day I already gave him. No big deal...yet. Get to finance and they try collecting $75 from me and I ask what for. He said the difference in the 10 and 14 day payoff and showed me the paper that I signed. Like you, I guess they thought I was just going to pay it. I said nowhere on any of these papers did I agree to pay anything. I'm not paying it. Fix it. After a call to the salesman, he reprinted the paper. Snakes. Since I brought my own financing, they were trying to get anything out of me they could.

I walked out of a dealership in Miami when I was told that there was a $1,000 fee for interior cleaning and protection that was required by the manufacturer to help prevent transmission of COVID-19. When I asked if this product was applied by the manufacturer, they answered "yes." When I asked why this wasn't included in the MSRP, they knew they'd been caught in a lie. True story, my wife and I went with our daughter to buy her first car in 2020. A 2019 Civic with 13000 miles. After 6 plus hours of negotiations we made it to the finance office where we discovered over 4K of added crap in the contract. On his desk he had pictures of his wife and daughter (about 6/7 years old) and vacation photos. I commented on the photos and asked if that was his wife and daughter to which he replied “yes”. I then said “ as a father I am here to make sure my child gets a good, safe and reliable vehicle for an affordable price. In about 10 years you’ll be sitting where I am and undoubtedly will be guiding your own daughter to decline all this unnecessary add-ons as your primary duty as a father is to lookout for your child’s best interest. What kind of a father would I be if I allow this?” The man looked at me for a few seconds, took a deep breath and asked for the contract back which I had been looking at. He re-wrote the contract for exactly the price we agreed in the beginning plus tax, tag and tittle.

I was almost a Napleton customer. I negotiated a price on a Ford Expedition and told the manager and salesman several times DO NOT RUN MY CREDIT. I was approved by our credit union and did not want another hard inquiry. The salesman gave me a form to fill out and I said "this sure looks like a credit app!" He assured me that it was not a credit app, but rather a required form ever since 9/11/01 for security purposes. After I complied and filled it out, he took it to his F&I manager and they ran my credit!! I told him he could keep his Expedition! I reported them to the BBB.

@@conchobar is correct. The fear of personal financial contact is costing you big. When you're online you get it all jammed on you in a bundle. Any negotiation requires a CSR who is not incentivized by you in any way. Their job as well is to get you signed, paid and out as quickly as any India help desk phonecall. The dealers compete to sell the same product from the same mfg...so you can always leave and buy it from another store. It takes so long....why....I want it to take 10 minutes....like an impulse Amazon purchase of a blouse. That's foolish. The longer it takes the less impulsive you are...and a good buyer will pay less. Every 30 minutes in the room makes you less in love with this shiny new toy, and more in love with your money. It took 5 hrs....just to buy a car...golly I hate this is often said. I say GOOD. The longer I tie up the sales and support staff, the more they have invested in the sale. My time is free. Their time is being measured. If they spent 4 hrs with you, that's cars they weren't selling. Eventually they will come to your price (if reasonable) remove all the add-ons to make it work and once they come close to my price I say the magic words: I will pay X out the door....write it up any way you want. You wouldn't believe the crazy math to maximize their commission and minimize the taxes and fees. Works for me every time. I typically come out about $2500 ahead for 4 hrs of drinking their coffee and saying no.

I started politely by asking what all that was and was told "Everyone vehicle gets that, it's mandatory". I had a deal "blow up" in the finance office in the mid 90s because finance guy wouldn't take NO as an answer when offering an extended warranty. Told him I wasn't going to waste any more time if he wasn't going to listen to me. Manager said they couldn't find keys to my trade in and I ended up having to call police. Once officer showed up, keys to trade in magically appeared so I could leave. Manager actually called me at home that night (I know don't give them home number) trying to save deal and to be honest I used language with him that would have made a sailor blush.

I think everybody who has ever purchased a car has a horror story. I was buying a used Camry in the SF Bay Area and I was paying cash. They were doing the offer/ run to the manager/offer/run back to the manager ...finally I told them I would only pay $17K OUT THE DOOR. ( it had low mileage and was in great shape.) That, to me meant: NO ADD ONs. Well, the finance guy whose job it is to close the deal and make some more money started in on me. I told him : I can save you a lot of time- I don't want ANYthing more. He said ..in effect: he was required to go through the motions. Well, I held firm, he went on for 45 minutes, and I didn't add a single thing. I should have walked when he came up with my total as $17,000.01. But I liked the car and liked the sales lady so I handed my check over and pulled a penny out to close. I love telling this story to let people know the true nature of car dealerships.

I negotiate all the car deals for family and friends. Over 10 years, I've 'bought or leased' 19 vehicles from one local dealership with several franchises. A few months ago, I went to negotiate a lease deal for my daughter's third Honda Odyssey. They added a $2,700 paint-and-interior protection package, and then told me that Honda mandated that I buy that if I wanted Honda finance! I called Honda. They were shocked, and appalled, that one of their dealers was telling such a lie. It is illegal to tie finance to the purchase of a dealer-provided add-on. Yes, it is illegal, not merely deceiptful. Firstly, absolutely no concession for my history with them and, secondly, I feel sorry for all the people who parted with $2,700 after being bullied and lied to by those clowns. I worked at a dealership and later owned a small one. Now that I am an "old man" in their eyes I tell them up front that I will not pay for ANY addons. Then I do the dance and later show a copy of the manufacturers cost to the dealer for the vehicle (you can get this on the internet) and offer a reasonable amount of markup. I also always buy at the end of the month and bring up what they are spending on "flooring" almost all dealers are "leasing" the vehicles on a monthly basis from the manufacturer or banks and the next payment is due at the first of the month. The sales goals are also calculated at the end of the month, and everyone wants that number to be up. You have very good information and I think people will save a lot if they listen to you. Thanks.

As another commenter said, you loose out on bargaining for a better price if you don’t go on the lot. My lil sister wanted to buy a brand new car 9 years ago but wanted to take my dad with her so she wouldn’t get swindled. I told her our dad didn’t know about the art of the deal and I would tell her what she needed to do. 1. Get your financing before you even go in. That way you know exactly how much car you can afford and what your payments will be up front. 2. Browse their inventory for the car you like and print it out because that’s one you like at the price point below your prearranged financing because we are walking out the door tax, tags and title either below or at that check you have in your hand. We go in and they pull the swicth of we don’t have that vin on lot. Cool pull the same exact model car with the same specs. She drives three and likes one and we go inside to make the deal. Meanwhile every guy in the place is making an excuse to walk by and chit chat. my sister is gorgeous. I mean I’m pretty and all and I definitely wore that particular sundress for all the right “Sofia Vergara” reasons but lil sis is extremely pretty so I’m assuming it’s just to get her number or something because they seem to be pretty interested in what was going on. . Salesman comes back and has everything for her to sign and I look it over and told him no, we said we wanted it for this price and this price only. Go back to finance. She gets it for this price including tax. Tags and title or we walk. She already has a check. They aren’t the only dealership that sells this car. Guy looks surprised but goes back. He comes back with the paper work shaking his head and she looks it over and tells him she told him that she was here to buy a brand new car. Like, 20 miles or less brand new car, what is this. Car had 35 on it but okay. It’s her car. Well turns out the car whose vin number they didn’t have was suddenly found and it only has 15 miles on it. She’s happy and signs the paperwork. At that point we had been there 4 hours because you have to wait for finance even if you have financing already but he sends the car to get a wash and all the dealership stickers removed and I tell them I’m going to head on out because she’s just waiting to sign the paperwork with the finance dept and that would only be about 20 minutes or so because she was already set on that end. That’s when the salesman explains to both of us why all the guys in the place were circling us. They had never seen a woman come in to buy a car on her own. THe women always brought their dads, brothers, boyfriends or husbands to the dealership with them. This was the First time women came in on their own, with their financing already in place and threatened to walk out on the hours longs deal if finance didn’t make it work for her price point. Plus they wanted to know if we were single. 😆 I told him I had an ex that was into buying and selling cars for himself and he liked to talk about it. A lot. So I learned about it so I would be able to talk about his hobbies with him. It all boils down to research. The more you know. I saw him the following year to buy my brand new car and again at the end of 2021 to buy my SUV. in and out each time in 4 hours and that’s only because I had to wait in line for finance. He was begging me not to leave because finance was slow but I just watched my movie on my iPad and was done in 10 mins when my turn came up. He told me my sister and I were this legendary tale that they tell new salesmen about all the time. Go figure.

I’m glad this is all on one channel now. When I first bought my car I had to scour a LOT of websites and KZbin channels. I’ve been to a lot of car sales with friends and family so I knew what to expect. In any case, when I did my research I was surprised that it was ILLEGAL for dealerships to say that warranties were required for sale. It just gave me flashbacks to all the times it was pushed on my friends and family. The slickest one would have to be the guy who tried to sell my aunt a Buick and worded it as something that was non-negotiable and the option was the base warranty or one that was more expensive and had ‘more coverage’. Aunt walked away from that deal. Thankfully, I also did research on the dealerships in my area and picked a good one. My car buying process was painless. Now, I help out my friends and family. When the finance manager asks about adding warranties: I point blank asked them if it was required for the sale. So far, all have said no and backed off pushing the warranties and cut the time spent in that office considerably.

I learned early on in my car buying life to simply add up all the numbers myself in the finance office. At least half the time, the finance manager made a ‘mistake’ (in their favor, of course). At a Hyundai Dealer in Athens, GA. I had to walk out of a MSRP deal for a 2022 Elantra Hybrid after the Sales manager just straight up marked up the car $7000 dollars above MSRP. And laughed while saying go ahead, walk out , I know I'll sell this car for even more to the next guy that walks thru that door. So once I told him I would report his tactic back to Hyundai Corporate, He handed me his business card and said," Oh yea, When you call Corporate, Be sure to state my name and title. They just don't give a shit.

I'm 72 yrs old now and have bought my share of cars, lessons learned the hard way. Dealers have always taken advantage of customers but, try being a soldier from out of state, during the anti-military days of Vietnam! I learned a lot of lessons the hard way. Anyway, the hardest lesson I learned was to say, "No, thank you." And then get up and walk out. Not pretend walk out but, having your mind made up to leave. Do your homework and have a list of dealers ready. (I actually have a set of spiral-bound index cards with me. The particulars of the car I want are written on the top card. The following cards I write down the dealer, salesman, and price quoted.) I let the dealer "see" that I have this set of cards as I write down their information. When they see I'm serious about "researching" and shopping, they usually come up with a better offer. Be committed and firm. Good luck.

I bought a new Outback at a dealer and during the financing paperwork I was pressured into "adding" the additional dealership warranty for a substantial amount of additional money...After declining several times with the finance person we were joined by the dealership manager who gave me an additional hard sell and warnings about how much repairs would cost without the additional warranty. As he continued to press me about the issue, I finally told him that I had lost confidence in the reliability of the new car and the commitment of the manufacturer to honor the new car warranty. I said I was going to reconsider the purchase and they both fell all over themselves to accommodate my purchase. When I went a few years later to trade that car for another new Outback, I explained the previous ordeal to my sales lady and told her if anyone mentions addon warranty or other items during the financing paperwork, I'm walking out. No one did. Nevertheless, I will never shop at one of their many dealerships in my area. When I recently purchased my new Honda Pilot, I explained the previous experience to him and was assured that the dealership did not use such tactics. The key to buying a car is always being ready to say thanks for your time and walk out. I've used that tactic to get reduced interest rates and additional vehicle addons at no or little cost. Unfortunately, with the market for cars and real estate being in disarray the past year or so, I'm not sure dealerships really care because there are more buyers than cars...in my area anyway.

A few years back I was purchasing a Mercedes Benz B250, I told the salesman NOT to put any dealership stickers on the car, you know the sticker or emblem they put on the car showing their dealership name and logo where you purchased the vehicle. They said they need 2 days to prepare the car for delivery, I said fine i'll be back and I will sign the contract at that time. So when I went back two days later and the first thing I did was to go and inspect the car prior to signing the contract, and sure enough they had their sticker on the car with a license plate frame with their dealership name, so I looked it over and said okay,, goodbye. You should have seen the look on their faces,... they said whats wrong?... I said, " I told you NOT to put your dealership stickers or any other publicity garbage on the car, and you did, so I am not taking the car. The salesman said, " seriously, you're not going to take the car because we put the stickers on it?" I replied, " That's right, i'm not playing games with you " and starting walking out towards the door,..well I've never seen people move so fast, they said okay we are taking the stickers off right now, I said fine, I'll sign once I see the stickers are off. 10 minutes later I was driving the car out of the dealers lot, with no stickers on it of course. Most people don't mind the stickers, I do, I like a clean look to the car.

Have had a few instances where a dealer started this garbage and I would push back from the start. If they didn't stop, I just forgot about doing business with them. My last car, the dealer worded something to me to make it sound like one of the costs I had to pay was required. I replied back via email and said that if this was a legal requirement then I'm out. The manager backed off and said no it wasn't and made it sound like I twisted what he was saying. I guess it made him feel in control but anyway, that cost was not brought up further. I ended up buying the car because pretty much it wasn't available within a 50 mile radius but the deal was acceptable, no hidden costs. I just hate the crap that so many push on you. I see some are now allowing you to go to the manufacturer's website to buy direct so maybe that'll be something to check out on my next car.

I'd say "no" you want to be paying LESS than everybody else is paying these days because most are paying MSRP or above. 3 years ago it was almost unheard of to pay even close to MSRP - now you're doing pretty well to be paying sticker. Watching dealerships I've been familiar with for many years that used to have 100+ new vehicles on a pretty small lot and some with several hundred - have perhaps 2 to 10 new cars at any given time. They may receive in about 8-12 cars and in less than 3 days all but one or two are gone. I do agree that the end of dealerships "as we've known them" is or should be a thing of the past. With EV sales being very popular that new way should serve as a wake up call for manufacturers - I believe that it is...

Actually sometimes adding vehicle warranty at finance can lower your interest rate due to lower risk of the finance company. So accept the warranty then after the deal closes go back in a week or two and cancel the warranty to get a full refund, your rate will stay the same and you get the money back in full.

This just happened to me. I worked for hours getting a good deal on a used truck. Went to pick it up and there was an issue with the title. As a stall tactic they had finance work me over with the add ons (this dealer dose not do the hard sell, but you have to decline soo many add ons). All was said and done and I had wanted the extended warranty and the tire coverage (I have gotten way more than my monies worth on both of those) and the title issue is unresolved. They finally killed the deal as they were going to have to go to court to get the title released. They worked up a different truck and promised me everything the other truck had and more. We came to an issue with the bed of the truck being all scratched. They said they were not going to paint it. I agreed and told them to toss in a free bedliner. another refusal. I walked out on the deal. A couple hours later the GM of the dealership called to talk some sense into me. We went back and forth and I got to hear how they were not making any money on the deal (with 40 dealerships in my area owned by them, I hardly could believe they lost money on ANY deals). I politely told the GM I had to get going because I had a test drive scheduled for first thing the next morning and that after I looked at a few other trucks I would call him back. That was the tipping point and he told me that he was going to personally pay for the bedliner, because he was not going to let a deal walk away over a bedliner (which was my original point with him in the first place). He said it may take a couple days to locate one (really with 3 CHevy and 1 GMC dealship you can't find a bedliner?) I said take all the time you need as I have not signed a single form yet, so as far as I ws concerned we still didn't have a deal, and I was still shopping. Amazing that they had a bedliner in the truck the next morning!

1. Bring in your own financing before putting a foot in their door. (Leverage!!) 2. Negotiate price, tax, tag and title only. 3. Do complete walkthrough of the vehicle. If a particular option is listed but it’s not on the vehicle, lower the price according to the cost of that missing option. If they don’t allow you to do any of these, RUN! Tell them no deal!!

You can negotiate price, but you can't negotiate the tax, title, and tags. Those are all government fees and the state collects all that garbage anyway not the dealer.

I am simply going to ask upfront if you are financing. Changed your mind after negotiations? Then I changed my mind as well. Now we get to start all over because the customer wanted to waste our time thinking they read something cool on the internet. Dont like it?? Want to walk?? Cool. Ive got every car for the next 2 months presold.

I will always tell the salesperson when I am done negotiating that if your finance person tries to sell me anything I will walk. I will always negotiate only for the car and not add ons.

@@stevornrichards1380 That's what I said I do right up front. I have worked at many dealerships in sales and I know the routines. You do not need to tell me what to do.

I tell them at the beginning that I'm selling my own car and am paying only for the new car as it comes from the manufacturer, tax, and state fees. Nothing else including doc fee so make your offer accordingly. I always get what I want because I will walk if I don't. I also tell them the time limit is one hour or no deal.

I ran into this on a recent new car purchase. Didn’t notice the adds until we realized the price was suddenly about $1,900 higher than MSRP. Since the added items in that case weren’t the typical outright “fluff”, but were in most cases things that had real value to us anyway, I just offered to split the cost with them 50/50. They accepted that immediately, which told me a lot about the markup on those items.

If the dealer would not back down about the optional padding of the invoice, I would not only walk away, but let them know I do not do business with LIARS, [bait & switch or lying about the extras bbeing mandatory] then LEAVE -- and I have.

everyone lies, so at your job, no one should do business with you? Just negotiate and come to agreeable terms and keep it moving

I always say the same thing: "I've already agreed on a price, and shook a man's hand (the salesman). That's all I'm spending. If you want to throw in some extra goodies for that price, that's fine. But that's all I'm paying." None of the dealers have walked, so far. But I would have walked if they had argued...
