The bass line give the song that haunting feeling indeed. Tony is a legend. Beautifully played, Mark!

I love Peter Gabriel, and I really love Kate Bush ( I had all her albums after discovering her in the 1980s). But, for some reason I hated this song. Maybe because it was such a massive hit in the US, and seemed like it was always on the radio. I never really thought about that bit being a bass guitar. I'll have to check it out again, so I can learn this lesson. Thanks Mark for opening up my mind a little. You're never going to get me to listen to reggae or Bruh-Country.

So beautiful. More like a pianist's left-hand accompaniment pattern than a traditional bass line. Tony Levin's creativity is simply off the charts.

Pls comment some day on the grief suffered by us mere mortals should we dare try such a bass line in most bands: "Too busy! Too much! Shut up and play the root! What, are you the lead bassist?"

I’m no pro or even an advanced player but I’d say in bands like that the most successful bassists are those that can either solo underneath the guitar solo if there’s enough space or lay down a bass line that makes the guitar solo shine more. It’s a skill in itself and worth working on, that said it can’t be ruled out they don’t allow you enough creative freedom, but this is a stereotype we’re talking about.

Also: sometimes if you are doing a busy line it helps to turn the volume down, I don’t know if you’ve ever heard the war pigs solo and really listened to the bass solo which has two bass tracks layered underneath the guitar solo playing different parts, it sounds great but when you really listen in you can hear some of the.. discord, discourse? In the solo

Hey Mark . You are definitely a fabulous and well-versed instructor, let's not forget bad to the Bone bass player. I just have a quick question I practiced this and correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't he also using a 5-string because he gets those real low notes I hope I'm making sense just curious.

He gets those low notes in the outro of the song am I correct ❓
@dwells377 күн бұрын
@WALTERTLHB he does hit an Eb note in the outro, which leads me to think that he either played it on a 5 string (as I do), or he was tuned down, which would move this whole riff up a fret.

@@dwells37 that's what was said when I viewed Dan Hawkins lessons Peter Gabriel's don't give up Tony Levin on bass . I really dig your input are you also a student or a member of talking Bass❓🤔 If so what kind of rig do you have and are you right-handed or left-handed❔🤔

@WALTERTLHB I'm not a member of Talking Bass. I play a Sterling By Music Man five string bass, a 500 watt Hartke head and Hartke 115 speaker cabinet. I've been thinking about trying out the TC Electronic BQ500 bass head. I am righty. How about you?
