Hey Mark, thank you for your lesson. I play in a couple of punk bands and your lessons have given me so much more scope to come up with interesting bass lines learning this stuff. I am currently doing your chord essentials course which is awesome. Learning Jazz and reading music and the harmony behind it are explained so well on this channel, cheers mate.

I have spent WEEKS and WEEKS learning this (bloody) riff! I've studied all the live footage I can get my grubby little hands on, in quarter speed; I've purchased Transcribe and created loops where it's further slowed down to a snail's pace (on Quaaludes); and I've practiced and practiced it at embarrassingly slow BPMs; and you know what? After all this ridiculously-painstaking work, I've discovered that... *YOUR VERSION IS *EXACTLY** *CORRECT!!!!* I mean, I'm good...but you're better. I PROSTATE myself before you, Master - or do I PROSTRATE myself before you, MISTER? No matter, I think you - in your infinite bass-stuff wisdom - get my drift. So if anyone out there has read this far: DO AS I SAY, NOT AS I DO!! Learn this song EXACTLY as Mark describes it here, and follow his sage wisdom and practice it SLOWLY. I you will, as I have done, get this friggin riff under your fingers! Good luck. And Godsp- wait, no God-SLOW to you, mams and sirs! Yours Truly (Insane) - JD, Montréal

A beginner and layman asks: are there only theoretically 30 keys? In practice, aren't F# and Gb identical on the instrument and so are C# and Db and Cb and B? Is that just a theoretical thing? Aren't there practically only 24 keys on the instrument (after the enharmonic equivalence)? And why is minor (Aeolian) a key of its own and not just a mode of major?

@@talkingbasslessons You don't explain why minor (Aeolian) is a key of its own and not just a mode of major...
@talkingbasslessonsСағат бұрын
@@alphasor4076 Natural Minor is not the Aeolian mode just as the Major scale is not the Ionian mode. They might have the same notes and construction but modes are separate from the traditional key system. They have a totally different historical context. When we discuss keys and key signatures we are NOT talking about modal music. Modes are different in the same way that Just Intonation is different from Even Temperament and Serial music is different from Tonal music. You could use a phrase of C E G in an Atonal piece but you would not describe those notes as a C major arpeggio. They are only a C major arpeggio when operating within a certain context. If we are working within a twelve tone serial context, those notes are described totally differently. The Aeolian mode is described as an Aeolian mode when used in Modal music. If you are using the term Aeolian in any discussion of the Minor key then the term is being used wrongly.

You know you're dealing with some genius musicians when it literally takes 5 minutes to explain to everybody how to even come in on the very opening lick of a tune like this. There's never going to be another Police. Man I wish they would get back together. What kind of mountains would we have to move to get those guys to do 10 new songs and go to her again

Wow, that is a fantastic bass line. For me though, the best part of the lesson was the second half when you explain and teach us how it works over the chords and key. Fascinating stuff! And man, what a great tone you are getting. I love those staccato notes. A lot of punch in that tone! A classic song from the 80s from a masterpiece of an album. Thanks Mark!

I guess I have to be the only one who points out that you're missing a very important part in this lesson. It's at :51 and :58 on the original recording and it's heard on a separate shadow track and panned to the right side. If you're only listening to the isolated main bass track, you definitely won't hear it. But it's there in the full recording and I've only seen one player get it right on all of the bass covers of Roundabout here on KZbin. Watch below and you'll hear it at :11 and :17 on this video. (which is clearly audible on the full recording) This guy absolutely nails it, and he does it without a pick! kzbin.info/www/bejne/eGjSd4Vjadd2d6Msi=Z2pFCRD-5KUVEyZH

Excellent choice, Marc. Honestly, this album is so strong, front to back, you could have gone with almost any Song(s) from The Big Chair (see what I did there?😁) As a teenager during the 80's I felt there were many strong bass players and bass lines to pull from that motivated me to pick up the instrument. Jumping Someone Else's Train by The Cure probably did it, though.

This lesson DOES have everything! I’m really enjoying the tweaks you are doing with the weekly videos, more close ups and your editing choices. Occasionally, I feel it could be helpful if you were able to have tight close ups of your fretboard and/or right hand when there may be more intricate plucking, or would that bring major editing headaches into your production?

There are lots of great basslines from the 80s ? Japan, Duran Duran, being amoung them ! The bass player and band that came up with great basslines for me was Colin Moulding, of XTC, the best all round bass player iv'e listened to! Check out the bassline to " The Mayor of Simpleton " Only Andy Partridge, could come up with a bassline like that. But have to say this is a great bassline by Curt. 👌

Another great bassline of his is Millions from Oranges/Lemons. Rio and Girls on film are excellent basslines. But you would expect that bearing in mind the late great Bernard Edwards, taught JT how to play bass.

Kajagoogoo’s ‘Too Shy’ is the best bass line of the 80s. However, that song in general is, well, kind of crap. Tears for Fears, on the other hand, is an overall outstanding band you just don’t hear about much these days even though songs like ‘Head Over Heels’ dominated MTV at that time. Other notable bass playing of that era/genre can be found bands like The Cure and Duran Duran.
@DahcipheR7 күн бұрын
Completely agree. I always hated on Too Shy for being corny as hell (..still is), but that bassline really brought a new level of appreciation for me. Nick Beggs had absolutely no business being that beastly on that track 😂 ended up buying the album after just to see what else I’m missing.
