Almost 60 years ago my father made the choice to leave Brazil and come to this country to carve out a better life for himself and his family. How fortunate am I that he chose Canada - a land that is not perfect, or without its challenges, but renowned for its history of protecting freedoms and rights. For me, Canada has always been the bastion of justice. This Canada Day, I wish you a day of celebrating peace, family and hope!

@kevin lawrence Strange that you have said that... Whilst on that journey, some years ago now, at one of the impromptu stops for a train going the other way, we saw a backpacker get off the train and start walking back the way that we had come. He then turned into the forest and disappeared. Later, train staff searched the train but found no sign of him. The following day, a Toronto newspaper reported the incident, we stayed in Midland for a couple of weeks but saw no more details regarding this guy. Perhaps wacky bakky had been responsible? Otherwise, a great experience. Have since taken the Indian Pacific from Perth to Sydney across the Nullabor Plain, about one day shorter but equally worthwhile..We have travelled all of the rail journeys in New Zealand, no overnights just several hours in duration. Regards.
@tonywatson4979
@tonywatson4979 4 жыл бұрын
@kevin lawrence You were not taken as rude, unfortunately I am now past the age of hiking, our trip was somewhere in the late 80's. My sister had migrated from UK years before, living first in Nova Scotia where her husband was involved with water reticulation and such. They moved eventually to Midland on Georgian Bay, that was our destination. NZ is much like Canada except about 10% of the size, the scenery here is spectacular but doesn't have the distances of Canada. My wife and myself emigrated from the UK in 1965 and settled in Auckland, NZ's largest city. We now live in Invercargill, right at the southernmost tip of the country. Next stop is Antarctica. We moved here on retirement in 1992. ps 10% may be an exaggeration.
@tonywatson4979
@tonywatson4979 4 жыл бұрын
@kevin lawrence The travel industry here, some years ago, had a slogan "Don't leave home until you've seen the country". That was because the temptation to travel overseas stood in the way of visiting areas in our own neck of the woods. NZ goes from almost sub tropical in the north to cooler climes in the south. We don't see snow very often where we are, then only an inch or two unlike pics that I see from my niece in Ontario. About 2 hours drive from here is Queenstown, our major skiing area. It is considered excellent by teams from Europe and other countries, they send their Olympic teams here for training. Invercargill has about 50,000 pop, which suits my wife and myself, we have 'old fashioned shopping', no malls, tallest building being a 7 storey hotel, the majority of homes are bungalow style . All in all, fine for retirement.

I am related to Cartier, who was the first to set foot in mainland North America. And about half of the first contingency of permanent settlers to settle in the new world in 1604 with Champlain are my ancestors. Little known fact, it was these French pioneers who were the first Canadians, as this is what the Huron would call them to distinguish them from other white men (english) that would come later. They were Canadians centuries before the land would be officially named Canada. Three of my French ancestors took Native wives, women of the Nipissing, Abenaki and Huron nations. Their children would also be amongst the first Metis people.

After a week in Las Vegas, a city I absolutely love, I have a great appreciation for being able to return home to Canada. What I can say is that America has incredible people, beautiful in their diversity and passion. The workers in customer service must work very hard for what they have, and many do not have a lot, but in general the people seem happier with less than Canadians working the same jobs. What is sad is the deep poverty you see when you travel around, even in Vegas which is a city full of ultra rich. The disparity in wealth and the absolute poverty in some areas really puts into contrast how good we truly have it in Canada. In no way is it perfect, and we have so many bigots of our own, but we seem to put more effort into bringing up the standard of living rather than ignore it. Again, we have poor and forgotten people, it just doesn't feel so pronounced all over the cities.

The more amazing videos ( and it really is amazing)like this that are put out the less secret the beauty of Canada becomes. The more desirable it becomes ...the more people will flock to it. The more people who flock to it means more disrespect for the land. More garbage, more rudeness and pushiness. More me me me and mine mine mine. I love my home. I love the slow gentle pace of everyday here in our quiet rainforest. I love starting my day with the grizzlies and the mountains, and ending the day with the last of the sun glowing on the quiet dance of the salmon in the river. I do not love the tourist season. I do not love the chasing of proud grizzlies for an Instagram shot. I do not love the river pollution and blatant disregard for our much needed salmon runs. I do not love the foreign fishermans garbage and beer cans. I do not love the disrespect I see given to my very small community , to my neighbors properties. I do not love to see their fences bashed in by hunters, their vegetable gardens thiefed by drunk glampers and their meager belongings stolen. I wish this was a world where we could all enjoy the beauty without destroying it. But sadly its not. I love my treasured Canada but please dont come here. Let it be beautiful a little bit longer.

I was born in the UK and came with my family in 1953 and grew up in a village in Ontario.. We got a cool to cold welcome and I always thought I would never fit in, until I moved to a city. It wasn't until I went back to the UK for a visit in 2008 that I realized how Canadian I was. I'm never going to leave again. This is HOME! The greatest country with the best people in the world. Peace.

@pontiuspilot5887
@pontiuspilot5887 11 ай бұрын
@@tiffaniterris2886 It was after the end of WW2 and Canada was still getting back on it's feet with employing the men who served. The younger generation were finding employment scarce as well! Then came the influx of Displaced Persons from Europe. The It wasn't so bad in the cities, but my parents wanted to get a house and the cheapest was in the villages. Unfortunately that is where the bigotry towards foreigners was still prevalent. Even though Dad was an employed Tool and Die Maker we were still called Displaced Persons (DP = refugee!). The Parents attitudes were reflected by the children and my brother and I were constantly bullied through out schooling! As I said it didn't change until I moved to the city! Take care dear and have a wonderful Holiday season, however you celebrate. Peace and Love and Best Wishes to you and yours!
