Disclaimer: I'm not an engineer. If they were to put the spring trap in a concrete foundation and bury the base, it would probably help mitigate the damage to the trap itself, since being grounded would help direct the energy upward to the trap floor instead of outward and into the structure.

I haven't heard of a Canadian tree that's toxic to the touch. I live in AZ, USA and we have plenty of dangerous fauna and flora, but we can't compare to y'all, the worst vegetation I've run into was poison ivy and jumping cactus(cholla).
