Something I love about the villain's song, Hellfire: The guard interrupts him right after he says "Let her taste the fires of Hell, or else let her be mine and mine alone." When the guard opens the door, the room is suddenly filled with a heavenly light, a contrast to the hellish light that accompanies the rest of the song. The guard informs Frollo that Esmeralda has escaped. It's as if God is speaking through the guard to answer Frollo's demands, essentially saying "She is not yours to keep or kill." In this moment, Frollo now has one final chance to redeem himself. He can accept God's answer and move on, or to reject it and damn himself. He chooses the second option. When he turns away from the guard (who is currently God's mouthpiece) and says "Get out, you idiot", he fails his final chance at redemption.

To add to this excellent analysis, at the end of the song when Frollo falls to the floor they purposefully drew him in a cross shape. Which, from the audience’s perspective, is upside down. In that moment he, literally and figuratively, fell from grace.

During that chant, it’s like Frollo is justifying his feelings and actions to manifestations of his guilt. He knows he’s wrong deep down but his lust and pride are too strong for him to give up. Even at the end of that verse he was deflecting his guilt and admitting that he’s powerless to the thrall of his sins in the line “It’s not my fault, if in God’s plan, He made the Devil so much stronger than a man.” This song and scene are dripping with symbolism and I love it.

In the book, Frollo is a lot scarier because he is a lot more human. He is the priest that takes in Quasimodo and actually raises him because he cares. Disney made Frollo very despicable and evil because that's easier to understand and portray than true human evil. The priest Frollo of the book goes completely mad over his lust for the 16 year old Esmeralda and kills her in the process. Technically speaking, everyone dies except for Phoebus lol.

I'm surprised they did in the first place. The US has some extreme branches of Christianity so I would have thought they wouldn't want to risk angering them. Even here in Canada the film was controversial in some ways. But I can honestly say, as a Christian, that Frollo is so terrifying because I've known people like him. He's 100% accurate to how they justify their evil actions.

Phoebus is so underrated in this movie and I love him. From the beginning he is shown to be someone who has worked his way up to a good position in society but he never abuses this power. He has no prejudices, neither to the gypsies or to Quasimodo himself. He treats both Esmeralda and Quasimodo as equals from the start. And he has a strong moral compass. Even during the festival of fools, Esmeralda saved Quasimodo, but Phoebus was about to stop it himself being horrified, and of course saving the people from the burning house. Frollo and Quasimodo both lust after Esmeralda, either for being some evil vixen or for being an angel. Phoebus is the only one who actually gets to know Esmeralda and respects her for being her. She is no saviour or temptress, she is just her. And that is why I love that she chose him ❤

In the book Phoebus is a bastard who manipulates Esmeralda who is a teenager. Victor Hugo tells us not to trust appearances. He rewrote the story of NOtre Dame de Pris in the book The Man Who Laughs, we have the beautiful Lady Josiane who is a woman of great beauty, but she is a cruel person. He tells us that appearance doesn't always match who the person is.

The analysis I heard was that Frollo sees Esmerelda as an evil temptress, a demon of lust. But Quasimodo goes the opposite way: she is a pure angel who can do no wrong. That's why neither of them can "get the girl." But Phoebus, as you said, sees her for herself and that's what makes him worthy of her.

I deeply love this movie. And Frollo always creeps me out. I'm gonna leave here some trivia about the original novel "Notre-Dame de Paris" by Victor Hugo, which I loved too: • The story is set in 1482 • Esmeralda is a 16 year old girl and she's beyond naive • Frollo is actually an Archdeacon (and alchemist for his pleasure) and he's full of lust for Esmeralda, everything that happens is a direct consequence of his lust, he even orders Quasimodo to kidnap her. But at least he genuinely cares for Quasimodo and really chose to adopt him after his mother abandoned him • Captain Phoebus is an asshole that only wants Esmeralda's body, he doesn't care at all about her, but she's too madly in love to understand that • Quasimodo is also half-blind and fully deaf because of the bells, he falls in love with Esmeralda because of her kindness, like in the movie. He actually can leave the cathedral • The law of sanctuary is a thing in the book as well • Clopin rallies the Court of Miracles to charge Notre-Dame in order to rescue Esmeralda, since they want to execute her, and this is the first tile of a Dominoes of pure chaos, and the scene with the "lava" flowing down the cathedral exists in the book as well • The only character surviving in the end is Phoebus. It's a great sad book.

(This information about Hellfire isn't mine): First of all, Frollo doesn't speak or sing to God, or Christ, but to Virgin Mary. Why? Because, in the first scene that Clopin sings about, when the archdeacon points out the statues, Frollo focuses above all in Virgin Mary. Then, a thunder resonantes, and for a very short time (and almost invisible), Virgin Mary opens his eyes and stares at him like saying "You've done a bad thing". Also, the Cathedral's name is "Notre Dame", which means "Our Lady" so... Secondly, now focusing on Hellfire, the dark blue colour simbolizes good, and Heaven. The red colour, Hell. That is why you see a big Cross above the chimney, but the fire's red light doesn't reach it, it's dark blue. Also, Frollo wants to be "pious" as those cardinals dressed in red, who are judging him ("Mea culpa"/"My fault"). But, as his actions aren't pious, in the end, when he positions himself against the wall, forming a very little cross ( which is very little compared to the shadows of the good cardinals and Saints that ascend to the blue side ) he stays in the red side. The scene when the soldier appears to tell Frollo that Esmeralda is gone. That solider is surrounded by dark blue colour. He's an angel who comes to give him an ultimatum: "leave her and come with me, or continue and you're doomed.

Gypsies (Romani people in this case) are possibly the largest European minority arrived about 600-700 years ago. Originally from Northwest India (Rajasthan) they behaved and looked different as more nomadic non-white people. With the time the integration went better but discrimination was still on daily basis similar with Jewish people. And just as them they were a main target during the Holocaust.

As a kid I was annoyed that Esmeralda chose Phoebus but with a more recent watch it makes total sense. Just about every scene between the two showed how much they admired each other as people. From the onset, Esmeralda saw how Phoebus helped her escape the guards and when he gave her money (while she was disguised). Every other time they shared the screen they were constantly flirting and helping each other.

The story takes place in 1482 so the Eiffel Tower didn't exist yet because it was built since 1887 until 1889. Notre-Dame has a total of 16 bells so it's not surprising to see how strong Quasimodo is. I have to admit even if I'm french, I never had the chance to visit Notre-Dame. I saw it from the outside but there's always too much people who wait to come inside, and that was before the fire of 2019. For me, it's a good thing Quasimodo and Esmeralda didn't become lovers because for me, he saw her more like a mother figure. I also hate to admit it but Frollo was right about one thing : how the world can be cruel with people who are different. The scene of the humiliation shows how much the people are sheeps

It really showcases his struggle with the proper theme and tone, and portrays it in the sinister way it's meant to make you feel. Notre Dame was originally a book written about the historical importance of architecture and preservation (in an era when buildings were not considered historical value/important property markers (and caught on fire every 4 years) And within the city of Paris. It was the argument that the buildings deserved recognition not only on the efforts to build them and keep them but the general city appearance as iconic France creations (as German style architecture would creep into some popularity for a time being) the church Notre Dame was not only a visual marker in the city and skyline but was a historical importance for all of the religious practitioners and people in the city who attended that very building. (Also riots destroying the king statues that frolo gets stared at by. Those were ‘imported’ and expensive they don’t want to replace the noses on those things ever few years best consider them ‘art/important/protected property on private property.) It was turned from a serious book about architecture, into a more novel thriller version (to make public profits) then written as a more soap opera style novel (to make even trashier profits) then as a stage play. (Even cheaper lucrative money) In the original stageplays the characters their depictions and even details are very different then the DISNEY PG VERSION lol it was written as a spicy trashy penny play in like what 1700? (Esmeralda was depicted young and far more racist then the Disney version. There’s different versions where she dies different ways and ways in which Quasimodo kills her/other characters etc it’s pretty varied it’s a very old play) Originally quasi is the son of Frolos Brother (frolo has a brother who acts more as a playboy romantic falls in love with a Romani woman and dies from disease, frolo as the uncle and remaining family is given quasi and told to raise him as his own. Frolos despise and hatred for Romani women starts at this moment because his late brother and his wife and their sinful behaviors cause the loss of his brother in his rational. Him seeing Esmeralda entices him to sin like his brother and have ideas of love/marriage/sex and so he hates her similar to his brother wife but with more anger because he feels personally attacked/victimized/allured This Disney version actually paints frolo as a more overall cold and isolated unfeeling man, who’s sudden change of having desires not for ‘the lords control over all in righteousness and justness’ but for a common woman becomes an aspect of himself he hates (sort of cuts out the middle man of I had a brother and he had a wife and I hated her and you remind me of her) Overall the Disney version is probably one of the best versions (there’s something fantastic about seeing the building/how quasi runs and flys around it which a stage or book performance can’t truly compete with.) and the music is done fantastically it’s both really catchy songs that flow well and simply put by 90s standards (somewhere out there stands out) yet also has very intense and historically accurate music theory and references like Gregorian chant systems implemented by the church and choir/ vs music not inspired or involving Gregorian systems (be it modern or be it more classical works)

The sequel gives Quasimodo a love interest. Also the movies are set in like the 1400s, and times were very different back then. Females became old enough to marry by Esmeralda's age, even younger I think(14 maybe). Also, significant differences in age between a husband and wife was a sorta common thing back in those days as well.

The reason Frollo wants to kill Esmeralda is because he has lust and desire for her which is a sin. He is a priest so he can’t have sex or marry anyone anyway, which makes it even more sinful for him to want to have sex with her. He sees Esmeralda as an evil, seductive object sent by the devil to tempt him, when she’s literally just a beautiful young girl who wants nothing to do with him. This has happened a lot throughout history unfortunately.

Frollo in this film he is a Judge, but in the original version he is actually the Arch Deacon of the Church. While they changed his title, and made the role of Arch Deacon a kind of voice of reason in the film to protect people and Quasi, they kept Frollo unhingedly pious and obsessed with religion/religious purity. Film Frollo seriously considers himself a truly HOLY man, like more than the actual Deacon of the Church, because the original Frollow *was* the holy leader of Notre Dame. He's so psychologically twisted and delusional, he deserves to be in a horror film. ETA. (no one cares but) Frollo also exhibits traits of the Madonna-Whore complex (Madonna as Mary, mother of Jesus), which is characterised by idolising one woman (Mary) or a symbolic woman (Frollo has none bc he's trash lbr), and treating and acting like every other woman is a whore, *unless* the woman behaves or represents the Madonna (Mary) figure. Frollo sees all women as sinful, lustful, sirens, who are there to corrupt the pureness of mankind through sexual temptation, with the sole exception of the Blessed Mother; his song is a prayer begging Mary (Maria) to help him, not Jesus or God or any Saint; she is the only woman not deserving of hatred. The Gypsy woman to him is his greatest hatred, because he is racist in all things and sees the Gypsy 'race' as a scourge anyway, but if you add that on top of him focussing on a woman; what you get is a racist, religiously delusional, possibly even schizophrenic, overly powerful man with a God complex who is fixated on one person he believes is the crux of evil. This just escalates to a highkey level. He literally sees her as something akin to a demon in human form, and as a witch, and I think comes to a point where he believes she has been sent specifically to destroy him, but because he is so attached to the concept of his "viRtuE", he sees his attraction to her as something from Satan, and has to either destroy the symbolic 'whore' (burn her) or break her and make her into his 'Madonna' ("mine and mine alone"). In his burning of Paris you can also see how he's rationalising destroying everything in search of her, because Frollo believes she is tainting everything with sin and evil with her mere presence, and therefore it's in God's 'will' to do this literal fuckery/kill and destroy whatever in his path.

Chrollo doesn't "love" Esmeralda, he "lusts for her" and that's the topic of his song by the fire place. He lusts for her and yet he can't blame himself, but rather selfishly blame Esmeralda and call her an embodiment of sin. He's not the one willing to sin, she's the one that makes him do it. Just like rapers blame their victims for acting, dressing, doing anything literally "just to provoke them". Esmeralda is "provoking" him to turn away from God, so he decides to rather kill her than to stop sexualising her

The only thing that kind of bothered me about this reaction is they kept saying Frollo liked/loved Esmeralda. He lusted after her. There is a big difference between the two. He saw her as a physical manifestation of his sin that he had to get rid of either by making her only his or killing her.

In the book originally, right before Esmeralda is hanged but then Quasimodo saves her, Frollo's literally like " I can save you if you marry me", to which she refuses. Maybe in Hellfire, he's like " yo, god, I wanna (maybe) marry Esmeralda! If I can't tho, I'll just burn her to death". So maybe that's why he wanted to slide into her DMs (something Messages) and get with her.
