when i started learning english from songs exactly a year ago, i didn't even noticed that im learning, i don't know how it happened lol. this year when i took an offline English class for the first time at school, our teacher started teaching us new grammar stuffs, that most of my classmates had no idea about it. but i automatically remembered those phrases that were in lyrics, comments. i already saw them hundred of times. i was kinda shocked like wow i know it. don't try learning grammar without using it every single day

Language is not about perfection; language itself isn't perfect! That's why I like when teachers pay attention in other skills such as communication. Unfortunately my entire school life was based on grammar, so I feel not so confident at speaking, but I've been improving my skill by watching videos, TV shows... now I only need to talk... Thanks for the amazing lesson!! 😊

Many good points about how learning phrases can help you learn grammar automatically. I agree with that. However, I believe that learning some grammar helps you to express yourself in English because you need to be able to make constructions without relying on phrases that you've memorized. Also, it's super important for writing, so if you want to go to school or work in English, you should have some grammar knowledge. Plus, adults learn languages completely differently from children or native speakers. That being said, you are right that learners should not translate and should not focus only on grammar. 😊
@brendon2462
@brendon2462 2 жыл бұрын
You don't need a grammar book to learn grammar. Listen and read to thousands of hours of native content. Once you've heard the patterns thousands of times. It becomes like second nature to reproduce it. You develop an intuition for what's correct and what's not. Maybe learning a few basics from a grammar book might help. To get you started along with the most common 2,000 words. But after that it's all just exposure.

I agree with you 100%. Language teaching has been evolving and now we aim a balanced approach that tackles all 4 abilities. Of course, grammar shouldn't be the only focus as it was long time ago, but the grammar shouldn't be ignored either.

I have been learning English for a while and I do know what it means. Over the years, I have come to the realization of the fact that vocabulary expansion is by far the most difficult part of it. Do not learn grammar on its own. Internalize it while reading or listening in English. Who agrees? 📌

I learned English through listening and speaking and let me tell you something you don't really need to learn those grammars. I mean, this not always necessary to know the structures. you just need to listen carefully and speak without any fear of making mistakes. You will see how everything changes.

I disagree. Most part of people weren't born in a native speaker country and they use English as their second language, also the most part of people are not kids. Grammar can help us to get a good English foundation and also help us to speak English correctly. We also need to know every grammar structure if we want to become a good English Teacher. Remember that grammar is also important to take some exams like IELTS and some job interviews requires that. As you can see there are great advantages in learning grammar. Native speakers don't care about grammar and they don't speak English correctly. For example, my native language is Portuguese and I know how to speak Portuguese, but I would say that I don't speak Portuguese correctly because I'vent learned Portuguese grammar. The way that people speak Portuguese without grammar is terrible.Marina, you also said that if someone learn grammar they will think about grammar at the time of speaking to others all the time, but it's not true. I've been studying grammar for years and I don't think in grammar when I'm speaking to others. I can say that grammar have helped me a lot to build a sentence and speak English correctly. Why should we sounds like a native speaker if we weren't born in a native speaker country? The most part of people from a non native speaker country don't sounds like a native speaker, they don't use lots of idioms or slangs all the time and if we start to sounds like a native speaker, they will not understand us. Everything is important when we are learning a new language because we don't know what might happen in the future. We should learn grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, reading, listening, so we should learn how to speak English correclty first of all and after that I don't see any problem in learn slangs, idioms, phrasal verbs and sounds like a native speaker. Both formal and informal way are important. This is also related to our goals in life. If we have a goal to live in a native speaker country we should learn how to sounds more natural and learn many idioms, slangs and phrasal verbs in order to understand them. But if we have a goal to live in a non native speaker country maybe will not be necessary to sounds like a native speaker. I can say that because I've talked to many people who lives in a non native speaker country and they speak English correctly, most part of them started to learn English with grammar and they don't sounds like a native speaker. Some people who have difficult in speaking English focus only in grammar all the time and they think that classes is enough to become fluent, that's why they can't speak English. We should not focus only in grammar all the time, we should learn everything related to English like pronunciation, reading, speaking, listening, idioms, phrasal verbs, slangs. We cannot become a good speaker if we focus only in some of these things, we should focus in everything because as I said before the most part of people weren´t born in a Native speaker country. We cannot say that some part of English is not important . Everything related to English is important.
