Yes, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes reached No.5 in the UK with this in early 1977, and Thelma Houston's version was lower down the Top 20 at the same time. They were both excellent, and far better, in my opinion, than the Communards' eighties rendition. All credit to Jimmy Somerville and his team, however, for picking up on it and taking it to No.1.

You could buy these two records but they ultimately mean the same thing, whilst being different for the time/ era. Some of the other music on YT, et el has been changed over the years. That is another reason why not to compare the archive footage to the newer old footage that has been uploaded and changed.

The seventies was the best era for music. They were my clubbing years too and it was one of the best times ever. A friend and I could walk home from a club at 3am and never have to worry about whether someone might try to abduct us or attack us. We never worried about leaving our drinks in case they were spiked. We would leave them on a table while we danced. They were different times, more innocent in lots of ways and safer. I miss those times.

Of the handful up there, second to none, BUT.... you should not dismiss James Brown, he thread where others walked only after he did. David Ruffin, Smokey, Tom Jones and that elfish boy, Eric Burdon as that other White (Italian) boy alled "The Voice", Frankie had the pipes. And not to forget, as Lil' Richards said about that boy from Tupelo, "we all had some gifts we polished together and performed our best, but that White boy came with all of them, that voice, the ear for Music, those looks, that wild dance, and stage and off stage presence that you couldn't take your eyes, ears and all senses off him. I hated disco, the mid seventies were one of the worst periods in my young adult life. This song however makes me want to cry any time I hear it, truly heart wrenching and yet so uplifting. Superlative example of what great music was there amongst the dessert that was the "disco era".
