Despite the deceptive title, this was rather informative. I recall when John Amos' character was written off the show. I was a kid and at the time, I thought he'd actually passed away. Of course, later on I realized the facts. I always thought Thelma and Wenona were very attractive. Esther Rolle was an outstanding actress and the show was iconic. The cast of Good Times was not a cast of Comedians. Esther Rolle and John Amos were dramatic actors. Ralph Carter was also from the stage and a dramatic actor, which was one of the problems with Good Times. And the producers did not want a Black Father and Esther Rolle is the reason that John Amos was on the show.

Back in the 70s my father was James going from job to job trying to keep our head above water my mom was Florida staying home cooking and keeping us straight I was JJ the oldest an inspired artist and goofy my sister was Thelma the middle child and my brother the youngest a real life Good Times family growing up in the hood in 1970s Jacksonville Florida The cast and show may have went through a lot but the experience was way more significant than you could imagine along with Sanford and Son Whats Happening and the Jeffersons

John Amos as the father was one of the best things about the show. When he was no longer on the show, it was so different, as if he had died for real. He was greatly missed. Norman Lear allowed his racism to ruin the whole vibe of the show by firing John Amos. John and Esther were right about JJ, he was so Stepin Fetchit like, not what blacks wanted to see in those times/that era of being proud of being black. Although he was funny, it was embarrassing and, seemed he didn’t really fit in with such a proud, dignified family. It was also irritating that they never left the projects, never could get ahead no matter how hard they tried. Obviously, racism played a big part, just didn’t want positive black role models who were striving and thriving, only striving. It really makes me angry.

John Amos was absolutely right. The writers wanted to emphasize Jimmy Walker's character, but not as a real person with artistic talent, which they actually did for a short time. They reduced him to a wisecracking stereotype spouting one-liners and a corny catchphrase. They completely ignored the aspirations of the other two siblings, Michael and Thelma. This type of negative portrayal of Black characters is exactly why writer-directors like Robert Townsend, Rusty Cundieff, Keenan Ivory Wayans, and Spike Lee have created films on this very subject. The mainstream media, from television to the big screen, has a powerful influence on how people view themselves and their real-life roles in society.

I think it was said that in the beginning, they didn't want a father figure in the household. They wanted it to be just Florida raising her three children in the projects on her own . I watched Good Times when I was a kid in the 1970's and reruns in the 1980's and I never thought that the show was to focused on J.J.. For me, when John Amos left the show is when it all started falling apart.

When we were kids, 'Good Times' and 'Happy Days' were must-see TV shows. Certain nights were associated with certain shows, and 'Good Times' was associated with a certain day of the week. My mom, dad, sister, brother, and I would watch 'Good Times' together for the 1st 2 seasons. My father noticed I paid more attention to the show when Thelma appeared. I loved Thelma.
