I used to force myself to play faster than I could actually - without any warmups of course. I ended up with a ball in my left wrist (Hygroma), which only was painful at the beginning then later led to not being able to move my wrist. After months of suffering I decided to go under the knife and get a surgery. Then I started playing traditional grip because I wasnt able to play matched grip. It was still painful for several years. Now its working perfectly, however my left hand is way weaker than my right. Please warm up and down properly and dont force yourself into single stroke roll races. Some drummer have a different muscle structure and they are able to play naturally faster than me or you. I have now something similar on my right hand, I hope it's not gonna end up the same way like my left did. Stay safe and warm up always!

I'm 73 year's old and I was a carpenter, tennis player and a drummer, and I was told by an osteopath that the shoulder joint is very loose as that joint has had 3 careers. I had to stop 5 months ago when I got some bad pains in the joint from a very energetic jam session - hard rock. Yep, still rockin' at 73. Which exercises can I do to strengthen that shoulder?

Copper and aspirin for joint pain. I didn't start playing until I was 39, now I'm 47. Lower back, elbow pain sometimes.

Thanks drum channel for putting this out, it is nice to see some attention being placed on the physiological side of drumming. The lack of knowledge in the industry within this topic is astounding. One main point you guys should of mentioned which in some ways answers many of the topics you touch on here is utilizing rebound and not holding the stick too tight. Dave Weckl himself mentioned that is the main reason drummers get tendinitis and Jojo Mayer also mentions this when discussing technique etc.. He says " It amazes me how many drummers don't know how to use rebound which directly results in RSI-Repetitive strains". So all in all "overuse" isn't usually the issue but rather "misuse". One last point... Having your cymbals too low can also contribute to tennis elbow because your only using your forearm and elbow to drum. If you are playing rock or something with more "output" having cymbals higher can have an advantage as the work is spread out to your shoulders for more power. ( You balance the work between forearm and shoulder- not just one. Its all about balance.

I love drumming played for 10 years and got extremely good at the instrument, but started having a lot of pain and injuries in my hands and other bones like foot, shoulders, back etc... so had to quit , I hope I can play in the future as long as I adjust my kit to the right angles so I’m not over exerting my self ... I guess it’s just time to move on to big and better things ... but drumming will always be in my DNA ...

I just called Dr Podesta's office, and he's retired. I'm going to throw a "Hail Mary", and prey he, or an associate of his sees this. I had a spinal fusion gone bad, and have some neurological issues that have messed up my playing. I've done everything I could think of. I won't quit, but at this point I'm banging my head against the wall. Please, if anyone could recommend someone in the NE, reply. Thanks!

I am scared, as I've been a drummer for close to 24 years and the repetitive activities at work. Lately I've been dropping things all the time at work, and I'm worried it's from both causes

achilles tendonitis/bone spur for me. The podiatrist says my calves are way too tight, and that's what led to it. I feel like drum lessons should come with PT lessons! lol.

If you can handle the pain, you should be ok. I’ve got breaks I never repaired in both hands, and feet, torn shoulders yada yada..... After back surgery (screws, and rods in my lower back), I lost feeling in my foot. Since, everything about ME, and my playing,if you wanna call it that, is awful. I’m hoping this guy is still practicing.

Was in a car wreck few years back, double compound fracture to my my left arm & really did a number on left hand. Have plenty of strength, however, coordination really sucks real bad. Can still play & groove fine, but my fills really took a hit. Been working on finger tech, holy crap my left is not good. Any positive feedback would be greatly appreciated...

david beeson do groups of 3 and 4 going from snare to around the toms with fingers and a little wrist action to start each group starting at whatever tempo is comfortable. Do that for 12-14 minutes at a time with 6-7 minute breaks in between each set. So starting with RH - 4 hit snare, 4 hit high Tom, 4 hit mid Tom, 4 hit snare then to the left and Just alternate over and over during the exercise. I started working on fills with fingers more recently just to get some more speed I couldn’t get with my wrists. It’s pretty hard to control at first but within a month or 2 of focusing on it you could start pulling them off. I can send a video to show what I mean if you need it Cheers
