LOVED this episode! I saw Mike speak at a conference in my hometown several years ago and it's hard to explain, but his talk really made me respect myself and what I do more. In high school I got told it was a 'waste' that I was focussing on 'art' subjects like design and photography rather than 'academic' ones. Hearing Mike speak, about similar stuff to like he talked about here with not letting people call you a creative, helped me put into words why design is important, and it gave me the confidence to stand up for myself!

Sara this was really good. This guy knows his craft and doesn't make it seem like it's magic or what. He's just keeping it real on how living as a designer truly is.
@edgr8 жыл бұрын
I've managed designers for years and those who succeed the most don't treat themselves as high and mighty "creatives" who need inspiration to do work. Those who succeed treat design as a craft you work at for years. Your not blessed to be a creative. Plenty of people are creative. What sets you different is the work you put in.

+Edgar Licea - my youngest daughter got me to see this clearly... for years i would tell people she was so talented, one day she corrected me while we were looking at her body of work, it became obvious she was evolving and learning new skills as her portfolio grew. Will never call anyone "talented" again.

If you enjoyed this interview, you should go buy Mike's books. "Design is a job" and "You're my favorite client", especially the audiobook of the former. Not only should they be required reading for any design student or fresh design practitioner, but as someone who's been in the industry for a decade, I still go back to them about once a year just to make sure I haven't forgotten any of the great lessons in them.

So out of the videos I watched of yours so far Ms. Dietschy, this was my favorite. The rawness. The organic feel. The fact that you're 21 and doing what you love. I'm also 21 without a degree, and this time last year I was homeless from poor decisions. I now run the marketing dept. for 2 real estate companies, but slowly transitioning fully into film / photography. Keep up the awesome work and if you are ever in Phoenix, AZ, I'd love to take you out for coffee. Keep doing what you do best :)

I loved his take on college. There's a giant push for everyone to go to college, even when they are already on the path to success in their craft simply because it's the norm. Do not let people convince you to do something you don't feel up to. If you want to go to school right now do it, if you want to take a break do it, if your school sucks and you hate it transfer, whatever you want to change, do it! Do not continue to live life as if you had more than one, do not spend 50+% of your time doing anything you do not enjoy, life is way too short for that pooper scooper. "Don't work for a jerk," let's take it one further, don't let yourself be the jerk that keeps you from enjoying this beautiful opportunity we've been given called life.

I'm a graphic designer and motion graphic artist still in school finishing up my degree, I would have to fully agree with this guy. The media arts programs are just full of garbage and lack many things. I use school as a crutch situation, always projecting outside the system to own my craft and marketing side as an single individual. The key is knowing how to personality apply and network on any platform with clients or companies. Just allow yourself to fit in those shoes. Its not about why you want to work for someone, its about how you can benefit your talents to improve.
@NathanielGE8 жыл бұрын
Great episode. I'd say my biggest takeaway was speaking the language of who you are presenting to. Like we were talking about vimeo a few videos back. Most viewers on KZbin are looking for the story and not necessarily paying attention to your grading and shallow depth of field. (Although having a beautiful looking story would be the ultimate goal)

Cool, thanks for sharing! Can't say I haven't heard this narrative at universities before... I do a lot of corporate video production work for a university, and I've come across a lot of bright new PhD's, masters students, engineers, etc, who are genuinely concerned about how to market themselves, or find a career path outside of academia. I think many of them could benefit a little from some basic business/ marketing education. Quick question for you Sara - when using free downloadable music that you find on Soundcloud, do you still contact the artist for permission?
