Do you find that photography 'gets in the way' when you're traveling?

Another great video discussing very valid photography points. I know for a fact that photography (kinda) took over during my trip to the US, so too with a few other destinations. I’ll be travelling to Japan in 2026 and it’ll be my wife’s first time outside of Australia… I gotta try real hard not to ruin that for her! ✌️😂

It’s hard to put it down when you’re in a new place for sure! No doubt when I get to visit Japan I’ll run into the same. That’s a spot that’s very high on the list for me

All the footage is so beautiful and you captured everything so beautifully and is definitely a topic to pay attention to, we’re always so focused on registering the moment and saving the memory that we just forget to live it. Can’t wait to live these memories with you 🥹

I can't wait! 2025 is going to be incredible. Thank you for always being the first one to watch 😌

It’s hard-especially traveling to someplace new. Thankfully I was visiting friends with my family which mentally cued me to put the camera down and enjoy the trip.

I find that shooting with other people around can have that effect for better or worse. I’ll always get better photos shooting by myself, but we’ve got our whole lives to be alone and who knows how long with friends and family. Plus I’d rather have the people and the memories than just another batch of decent photos from a trip! Thanks for your comment!

Another great video and I 1000% agree. We took a family trip to Paris and I was stressing trying to photograph everything that I wasn’t enjoying myself. The moment I decided to put the camera away I began to enjoy myself. Next time I’ll be more selective with my shots.

Thanks so much man! Yeah it’s so hard to strike a balance. I think being super picky about what you shoot and not is the key. I’ve just been trying to keep my ‘minimum photogenic-mess’ bar relatively high haha

Who in the heck tried to say Caipirinha came from Portugal? That’s wild

A waiter in Cascais! I was appalled 😂. He was super friendly though and I ended up running into him on the train back to Lisbon too

Until one learns to photograph their own neighborhood as a world class destination, photography will always ruin your travels. Otherwise, one is nothing more than yet another KZbin photographer chasing likes. The same can be said of wedding photographers. Always chasing the destination wedding. Leaving money on the table for the rest of us in the local market.

I agree, I’m still learning that first part for sure, though I don’t really live in any one place so I’ve been incredibly spoiled. One of my biggest fears is that I’m too dependent on having all of these amazing places at my fingertips and I would be nothing without that crutch to lean on. It’s a long journey but it’s can always be an exciting one.

@@gunairy It doesn't matter where home is, the sentiment still applies. Because if I can't photograph my hotel or AirBNB as I would what's outside, I'm right back in square one. It's the same as having too much gear. As they say, limitation fosters creativity. Look at Jurassic Park. Severely limited by early CGI at the time, yet, it has become one of, if not the best movie to incorporate CGI to this day.

@@thedrunkweddingphotographer Fair point! And traveling light too. I'd rather have 1-2 lenses than 10 any day of the week. Photographing the hotel or AirBnB as you would outside reminds me of Greg Girard's work. He documented most(?) of his hotel rooms and inspired me to do the same when I found his work a few years ago: instagram.com/p/C7ul0W8yuW1/

@@gunairy Ain't even gong lie, I don't know who that is. I don't follow photographers. Outside of Ansel Adams, I'm oblivious. I follow chefs and leather makers. Took a look though, very good work. Reminds me of daily life in the hoods of Mexico where I'm from. One of the few places left untouched by the "influencers" on this platform. But yes, Girard proves the point of photographing one's mundane neighborhood because that's what stands the test of time. That's what will set you apart. Took a LONG time for me to learn that.
