What gear should you be checking to make sure your rental gear doesn't kill you? Turk goes over the parts to inspect and how to inspect them to keep you safe.
*Please note that the gear used in this video came from our pile of gear to be serviced and IS NOT currently in our active rental line*

Inspect your rental gear as if your life depends on it ...because it does. Rental gear is by definition ~HEAVILY USED~ LIFE SUPPORT equipment.

This is a great informational video/PSA. I recall doing dives at resorts where everything is assembled and your gas turned on by someone else before you're thrown off a cattle boat. Definately don't get complacent, especially without your own gear!

You should include viruses and illness. My wife and I spent 2 weeks in Fiji last December. We both ended up getting pneumonia. We heard people talking about a "bug" going around. Its likely our rental gear was used by someone that was sick befire we got it. The part that sucks is I brought steramine and the dive manager wouldnt use it. He did keep the bottle though. We bought our own gear as soon as we got home and will never rent again.

While I agree that bacteria from other divers can be bad, it is not something we can actually check for. Here at Prana Dive, our gear is cleaned with Steramine so we do not have those issues but thank you for mentioning this and commenting.

@@pranadive I took steramine with me but the the resort wouldn't use it on their equipment. Hopefully, now that we own and travel with our gear, this won't be a problem.

@@marcusstratton5 Did they give you a reason why they wouldn't use it? It is food safe so not sure why they would have an objection to it other than basic lack of knowledge.

Once I was diving in rental gear at 25 meters the regulator gave me sudden water breath and I was literally choking on that depth , thanks god I was able to get myself together but I am sure that second stage was never been serviced for 10 years
@mattbockman
@mattbockman 8 күн бұрын
I agree with checking both regs underwater. I also check for a poorly sealing diaphragm by breathing the regulator with the bottle closed. If there is no pressure in the lines, you shouldn’t be able to suck any air out. If you can, you have a leak somewhere.

Hello. I took my PADi Pool Sessions back in May 2023. In Aug I am going to the OW portion. This is a Good Refresher of what I learned almost 3 months ago. My Shop normally uses Dutch Springs, Now Lake Hydra, Which has been Closed. We used a Weight Integrated Jacket BCD. I found it easier to replace the weight pouches facing down. My Rental Equipment was in Good Shape. Think I managed 4 or 5 Breathes with the Cylinder turned off. They thought I was "Cheating" on the First Day. I returned the AL80 with about 1600 psi. The 2nd Day we were given Free Dive time. I was the Last person in my Class to leave the pool. Took the SPG down to 500 psi. I wasn't in any danger. As there were a pair of Nitrox Divers down there with me. One I think was an Instructor?? And I was only 12 Ft down.

Thanks for the video, good to remind oneself to never let complacency settle in. Also before every dive, I open the cylinder, do all the checks, then I close the cylinder and watch the spg to see if the system holds the pressure. I caught a busted SPG-o-ring once or twice before going in the water and could fix it on land.

When i am " interviewing" a dive centre😁 i ask about servicing intervals of B.C.D and regulators, their reaction to this question speaks volumes, some brush the question off, saying "everything is good" ,thats a fail. A reputable dive centre will straight away give details of their service schedules. Be prepared to visit several dive centres until you find one you feel comfortable with, be prepared to put in the work, not just go with the first one you come across 👍🤿

Not sure what you mean. A cylinder does not have rubber seals. A yoke valve does have an o-ring that can be checked but this is mentioned in our previous video which can be found here : kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5aTm5qGm6qZkKM

While I agree that having your own gear is key, the majority of divers do not own their own gear. Also, even if you have your own gear, these inspection tips are still relevant. Thanks for watching and commenting. 🙏
