Don’t Let Your Tire Pressure Monitor System Leave You Stranded!

In this video, we wanted to share our experience with you in order to help you be safe when pulling your travel trailer. We believe that our tire pressure monitor sensors are damaging our stems on our travel trailer. The weight and the centrifugal force of the wheel spinning, is causing the stem to bend and cut on the rim which is causing rapid air loss and blowouts.
After experiencing this thing several times, we believe that we are going to upgrade to metal stems.

Good to know, thanks! Good to see you again! I use those tire pressure monitors that have green yellow and red you put onto the valve stem. They don't help during a blow out. I guess I like to live dangerously.

@bertkelly7650 So nice to hear from you and hope you are doing great! Have the TPMS helped you avoid a blowout? Thanks for taking time to comment! 🤩

You have to have metal stems to use these aftermarket tps systems. I have the same system you have and I think it’s in the instructions.

Hate to say it, but I'd just chuck out the external TPMS, unless I hated people, then I'd put them on eBay. Here's why. I'd never use an external TPMS. There's a handful of reasons why the automakers put them inside the wheel rather than outside, and you just discovered one of those reasons, maybe not even the most important one. Another major reason is that it must hold the tire valve open to be able to read the pressure. So the external TPMS device and the valve stem threads, rather than the tire valve, become your last line of defense, rather than the tire valve. An external TPMS totally takes the tire valve out of the equation for keeping air in your tires, and I don't find that acceptable. That's as bad as, or worse than, driving around forever with a known leaky valve. You'd need the valve stem cap and threads to both work perfectly, as the only thing keeping air in the tire. And I think a solid valve stem cap is more reliable than some electronic device that also acts as a cap. So, external TPMS is a no-go for me. A tire valve is a very mature technology and proven piece of hardware. Not foolproof or bulletproof physically, but all the incidents that should cause a design change, happened 50-100 years ago, not rolling down the highway now. Automakers are willing to face lawsuits if they have a design flaw, because they don't. I don't notice them offering external TPMS as a factory option, because they've decided that internal TPMS is better, and they'd get sued if an external TPMS caused a problem, because it is inferior. I'm a mechanical engineer who loves technology. TPMS is a good thing to have, in theory. But I've been driving for 49 years, and haven't been in one situation where TPMS would have helped me personally. I've been in a few situations where it would have helped anyone (like many of my family members) not on top of how to take care of tires. So, TPMS is a good idea if done right, overall a lifesaver for the general public. Car makers do TPMS right, other than having crazy prices for replacing a dead TPMS sensor, and making them so that a dead sensor battery equals dead sensor. Yes, they rip people off about that, even Toyota. Using a valve stem that doesn't bend, will be a big improvement for you. But it's still disabling your tire valve during normal operation, at least to some extent. I don't like that, and personally I'd chuck them out, then just check the tires visually/manually however often I felt was needed. And if really concerned, I'd get internal TPMS. If there wasn't a brand I trusted, I'd remove TPMS sensors from my car and use them (if they transmit far enough), because I can tell how my car tires are doing, no matter what happens, just by how it handles.

@EfficientRVer We appreciate the information! This is something to definitely think about. We did have a situation where the TPMS saved us. Thank you for adding this to the feed and thanks for watching! 😃
