I like these type of videos. It shows how much effort it takes to maintain a van or camper without spending a lot of money with other people handling repairs or upkeep. Solar panels sound really cool for Clifford!

Thanks for PSA! Yes, every Vanagon owner needs to do this! Another item that is highly recommended is installing Blazecut in the engine bay. It’s an automatic fire suppression system, and cheap insurance.
@DemopVWgarage3 жыл бұрын
Two things to get for your T3 kombi , get a blaze cut unit in the engine bay and then change out your rubber fuel lines for teflon lined race braided hoses and "AN" fittings, job done :)

Sure, replacing the fuel lines is so much easier than maintaining fresh marshmallows in the smores kit to take the coolest Instagram photo as Clifford gives his life to toast the marshmallows to perfection! 🤔😬🔥 Thanks for sharing the latest round of updates for your van. Hopefully you will soon get to take it on a new trip. 😁

Yes fuel lines break down . Back when the factory built these vehicles ethanol was not in gasoline . E-10 and higher fuels nowadays increases the fire risk because stock lines were never meant to handle ethanol . Replacement hoses should be rated and labeled SAE 30 R9 .

Hi very cool and practical everyday maintenance and upgrades! I can relate to almost all of them! $0 years of owning my 1980 Vanagon, and still driving it almost daily. It sure doesnt look like yours on the outside, but what you dont see is all new. I have done a lot of panel and rust repair, but currently taking a break from all that. You guys are a awesome team, and congrats on your recent marriage!

In the Navy we call standing by with an extinguisher 'fire watch'. Practice using an extinguisher! Approach the fire while crouching. Sweep the extinguisher across the flames, back and forth. Courage and training and practice will put you in control. Or, join the Navy for free training.

Great tips! I just picked up a Titian red 87 myself and I'm going through a lot of the same things. Check out the rubber intake elbow between the air cleaner assembly and the throttle body, looks like it's collapsed which really restricts the intake. Mine was the same and I just replaced it. The new elbow is about $60 at CIP1. Also check your hard metal brake lines, the rear ones after the brake tee are rusty and the rear left blew a hole! There can be a couple thousand psi in there. Good luck and keep it up!

My brother's VW fan caught on fire because of that plastic fitting. Good catch. Matt, I don't know if your VW van has it, but many of them have a resettable fuse under the body on the frame near the large side door. You might want to check to see if you have one just in case it goes so you know what is going on. You may not have it though. Oh oh, social media security alert at 9:15.
@mattofstie92983 жыл бұрын
Wow, sorry to hear that about your brothers van 😕 It definitely makes me feel more comfortable now having done all this work. Thanks for the tip about the fuse, I actually haven't heard of that before! Will look into it 👍

Because of the 30 year old, brittle wiring in the Vanagon, electrical shorts are now becoming as much of a fire starter as the fuel lines. There are several wires in the dash that have power even when the ignition is off, so they ground out & smolder for hours after you park & then eventually ignite. If it's a manual transmission, once the ignition wires melt together, the van can start driving on it's own as the starter cranks & many have rolled up a driveway & set houses on fire. So as critical as replacing fuel lines, add a kill switch with removable key & cut the power anytime you are not driving the van. The kill switch will also help foil thieves, the 3rd most common way to lose a van unexpectedly, which is on the rise.

Love the videos where you guys work on the westie! Is Matt an engineer or mechanic by trade? It is so fun to watch him fix so many mechanical and electrical issues with your van!! And he makes it look so easy lol! also Nadine; have you thought of maybe throwing a couple water purifying tablets into your water tank for good measure? Not sure if that’s a good idea or not I just thought of it while watching you clean the water tank lol
@mattofstie92983 жыл бұрын
I'm both a welder and heavy duty mechanic by trade :) The water tank tablets are something we've talked about before, but I haven't really looked into them yet. I know a lot of people with RVs use them so it's probably an option we should explore 👍

The explosion just happened to me. Took my Westy to VW for full inspection before loaning it to my son for a camping trip. VW said the vehicle was fine. Gas and oil were leaking after one day (few hours) of driving. Took it to another VW dealer who let him leave with it and said he should be good to get home. Then it exploded on fire but they got out alive. The van is totaled. Very scary.

I lost my Westfalia syncro to a fire that started with a fuel leak in the engine space. Only liability insurance so it was a total loss. Inspect and change out any questionable fuel components
@cst20283 жыл бұрын
You forgot the fuel tank grommets !! The trouble with the original fuel system is it is not compatible with ethanol fuel that they sell in the United United States. It dissolves all the original rubber from the inside out. Then you have gas leaking everywhere when they finally fail
@cst20283 жыл бұрын
There are fuel tank and vapor recovery hose and grommet kits on various web sites . By they way the one engine hose correct size is 7 mm. Not 8
