Great video! 1 piece of constructive criticism aka recommendation. When you speak of a neighborhood whether this video or another, flash it's location on the island via map, so main landers know where you are speaking (without googling it). Thank you for the insight.

As a haole I could not agree more. I live in Kailua (I rent). I’ve lived on Oahu for 8 years. Picked Kailua for schools and multiple highway accesses to town for work. I noticed less then a year living here that when I go to places like Nanakuli, Waianae, etc.. I experience so much Aloha. It genuinely fills your soul.

I grew up in Hawaii from a young child (2) back in the 80s and my 4 children are all Hawaiian/Japanese/Philippians and a mix of European American from me, and sisters and niece/nephews are all light eyes/white or mixed. I love and miss the Hawaiian islands so much and the friendly laid back vibes people have there! I lived in Kailua, Kaneohe, also Big island (Hilo-Puna), and Kapaa, Kauai. We were local-haulis depending who you’re asking 😂. No matter how much you try to respect and integrate with the culture and islands, there are always going to be people who love and accept you, and people who are racist and make it known they hate your presence and existence. 😢❤ Growing up there as a child who loves people and life, it was hard to understand that kind of hatred. I would not change where I grew up if I could. Looking back it was cleverly challenging but sooo beautiful and peaceful compared to MANY places in the US. That said, Kailua was amazing the beaches there are gorgeous, but it’s way too crowded. 😢 driving to the beach is useless, walking or biking is the best way, but why? It’s too crowded most days. I don’t recommend moving to Hawaii for most people not from there. Go for a vacation, island hop and tour the best locations. Kauai and Maui are the most beautiful and laid in my opinion. Oahu is way too traffic jammed. Living there is awesome, but by moving there you’re going to make Hawaii way more crowded than it already is which drives costs up way to high for locals which then causes tensions to rise and corruption and racism are a big problem there. 😢 cost of living is fueling that as well as violence and turf wars. I say get a beautiful bnb on the coast and live it up doing the best it has to offer on vacation and then go back home or enjoy another vacation somewhere else that is more spacious and welcoming. This is just my personal opinion and experience. Much love to the Hawaiian people culture and the islands! ❤I do miss it there soo much! ❤😢

My wife and I really enjoy your channel. She’s Kamaʻāina and is Hapa and I’m Haole. We live ninth island now but lived on Oahu mostly in Kailua together from 2005-2015 and had a custom cake business there as well. I don’t think Kailua is without problems but I do think you guys were a little more hostel about your view of the people there. You didn’t seem to talk about the other side of the same coin when it came to other neighborhoods. There is small mindedness and disrespect towards others in all of the neighborhoods. We delivered all over the island and was able to meet many different types of people and most were kind and had aloha but there was a lot of hate towards me simply because I was white. There are lot of white people disrespecting the culture and are hostel towards locals (no aloha spirit)in Kailua but there was also a lot of unkindness from other areas of the island towards me. So I think it goes both ways. I love Hawaii and we plan on moving back some day. Anyway we enjoy the channel and love seeing Hawaii from a locals perspective….🌺 🤙🏻

@@aartisan44 There were excessive fireworks to about 2010 from Oct to Feb., Anzio every night. A new state fireworks law tamped things down for about 8 or ten years, the effects seem to have worn off, and fireworks are on the upswing. I moved away from 'Ewa after 14 years in 2015. I lived in Leewsrd Estates, a 1959/60 subdivision, not equipped with homeowner's associations, as are most of the '90s-present homes in the 'Ewa/Beach area. 'Ewa town, on Renton road dates from 1890 with the 'Ewa plantation and mill. The interwar managers mansion and homes of plantation officials and workers are there. The Plantation folded in 1995, and much is in private hands. Plantations began to fold at the end of the War, and the last one closed on Maui c2016.

Hawaiian history & world politics were pretty complicated in the late 19th century. I'd encourage folks to listen to Dan Carlin's "Supernova in the East" epic podcast series on the topic. The geopolitics of the time pretty much sealed the fate of Hawaii, it was going to be annexed by Japan (indeed a full 25% of the population at the time was Japanese), or the USA. Even if the coup didn't happen, there was no way the USA was going to let Japan have an island chain that close to the west coast, period. Eventually, some pretext would have been cooked up to annex it, if not in the 1890's then soon after. Hawaii is as much a victim of history as it is anything, and the for what it's worth, Japan at the time was not exactly known for treating it's colonies super great (there is significant mis-trust of Japan to this day in places like Korea & China), so Hawaii probably got the best of two poor choices. I'm not saying it was right, or fair... but history is rarely either of those.

Don't move to Kailua if you don't like swamps and Mosquitos. Don't Move to Kailua if you have to go into town (Honolulu) in the morning because that might be another 2-3hrs in traffic. Meaning if you start work at 7am you might have to leave around 4-5am. Idk I lived their as a kid? Oh lower Kailua. Idk I like ward. But I love the city. If you looking for Hawaii slow then Oahu would be the wrong island I love downtown, downtown has first Friday. The Manapua Man is something I miss in town. If Eva has it that a plus idk why anyone wouldn't like that? Yes we are a landmark culture. Kaimuki I lived there too don't move there if you don't like hot, Don't move there if you like things close to you, Don't move there if you like continual sidewalks. Don't move there if you have to walk a lot and you hate walking up hill, Kaimuki is very hilly.

the talking point of not owning the beach applies to those transplants from the mainland living in Lanikai Kailua, you, know the ones thats been putting up gates and blocking public beach access walkways illegally, Or is it legal? because those keyed gates keep popping up and the argument and battle continues on, its been ongoing for years...

I didn't watch the video, but I bet Kalihi is one area to avoid. I lived in Kalihi Kai, when it was nice. I left Hawaii and Kalihi in 1953. My family has a farm in Waimanalo since 1948. It is a nice place with one of the best beaches in Hawaii. I don't know if Waimanalo is still a nice place. Waimanalo became a place for Hawaiian homesteads and a lot of Hawaiians moved in so I don't know if Waimanalo is still a nice place.

Don't move to Kapolei if you want quick access to the beach/water. There's beach next to the runway of Kalaeloa and there's Barbers Point Beach Park in Campbell, but neither of those areas are conducive to casual water activities or quick to walk to from anywhere in Kapolei. This leaves you with Ko-Olina and Kahe Point/Tracks and all of those will require you to drive. You can ride a bicycle to Ko-Olina through Campbell if you know the route, but if it's not an E-Bike it's going to be a workout coming back. That being said, Kapolei is a nice place to live and Makakilo has nice views and a breeze most days.

I'm glad y'all are doing this, but at least put a nice photo or painting of the 'Āina in the background. Better yet do the podcast on the lanai or backyard. The 2 of you are actually better outside, you know. Even better, get another native guest to share knowledge about what it REALLY takes to get there and STAY there (people, ocean, land, kids, karma, etc.). If y'all just gonna sit in that dull room and talk S then might as well return the studio equipment.
