I made a video game for my final High School Senior Project. Here's why that was an absolutely terrible idea.

Well whatever you do, you at least didn’t try to make a fighting game in two weeks in pygame where you spent that first week simply building the computer and learning pygame and spent half the second week making a playlist to make it to for an end of year project in sophomore year of high school

My take on senior projects is that if you work on it in highschool, you can work on it when you're out of highschool on your own time, so go for something easy especially if school is already stressful for you. Or you're in a situation where doing things is in general difficult. This is totally what I did myself, and did not have to scale the project back so far that it was about 1/20th of it's original size and basically amounted to making the work I already did enough.

procrastinating over a month? waiting for the absolute last minuet to finish? feeling overwhelmed from the amount of work required? entering panic mode close to the deadline then zooming through the entire project? yup, sounds like ADHD to me😅

WHAT THE HELL THIS IS LITERALLY LIKE LOOKING INTO A MIRROR LIKE ONE FOR ONE, THIS PRETTY MUCH EXACTLY HAPPENED TO ME context: 2 aps, capstone project video game (roblox dungeon crawler) spent the months from september to december doing NOTHING despite the fact i literally told myself "if i don't finish this over christmas it'll actually be impossible" then april rolls around and i STILL have basically nothing done (a ton of hopeful planning mixed with the barest traces of code) OH AND DID I MENTION I HAD ZERO EXPERIENCE IN ROBLOX STUDIO???? then i CONTINUE to procrastinate, leading on to the last 3 weeks where i locked in (worked on the game for like, 6 hours at a time, 4 of which were probably spent dissasociating) pretty much my ENTIRE final slideshow was like "wowow this was a real great learning opportunity" or "i will be sure to not procrastinate later on" i had a 'playable' version by the end, by that i mean a bunch of systems that were integral to the final game, and a somewhat crappy fireball spell implemented on hopes and dreams my one solace is that what i did end up with (no matter how little) was good enough to be still used as i take it from capstone to personal project SO YEAH. MORAL OF THE STORY IS: do NOT make a video game as a capstone project or if you do, make sure to have good habits (impossible)

@@quantumportal8486 real, i basically blacked out for several hours at a time whenever i had to code something and woke up with something that kind of functioned motivation is probably one of the hardest issues to manage when making a senior project, and it's pretty easy to feel unmotivated when working on a project as overwhelming large as a video game

@@thefuriouslucario8019 yeah absolutely, motivation failed me but the good ol stress monster managed to push me through in the end ultimately what ive learned from it is that i need discipline rather than sporadic motivation but... yeah making good habits sucks ASS even now that its summer and i have legitimately all the time in the world, i still am avoiding working on MY passion project full of features that I WANT worst part is, it's not necessarily difficult, i can definitely do it, but that first step is so daunting for no reason just getting that snowball moving etc etc, welp if anything the game will appear in my mind more often now so i can eventually rationalize why i must work on it

...You are about... 3 months too late to save me. I. Uhh. Might be making a video game for my senior project. Luckily I specified it was a demo so it just needs to be playable and it doesn't need to be fully finished, but I feel like I'm just a tad screwed now. Any suggestions for getting art/music? I have no interest (and negative interest in making art), but I'll probably have to and I'm not sure where I'd start with either.

@@puddlesl1me In terms of art and music, I'd probably recommend just using placeholders, like the square people in Min-Max Wages, or some music from another video game (not sure if this is legal tho lmao), if you haven't had any experience with making either before. When making a game, you really want to make sure it functions first and foremost before making it look good. I enjoy doing art and music in my free time, so it was just something I was able to do on the side while working on the project, but not everyone has the same interest or ability to work on every little asset of a project like a video game, so it's best to work on what you know you need to and are able to do, especially since a senior project is done in a fairly limited amount of time.

I figured I'd need to use some assets from other sources, and most likely it would be fine if I decided to use a bunch of free assets/try and get someone to make some random art since the focus for mine is the programming and game design side of things. Thanks for the advice.

I’m guessing if you tried a game jam, the universe would implode from the sheer stress focused on a single point. Actually though, this was a great video. I was hoping that your alternative was switching to Godot, but Unity was a fair choice as well. As a fellow game dev who’s about to go into their final year of school, I promise I won’t try to make a video game as my final project… maybe

@@TheEpicKeyboardSmasher i got my grade after the first semester because my capstone class was only a semester long, and my teacher liked the video as well as the little bits that i had already finished, so i got an 'a' (my school works on a 4 point scale, so basically a 4/4) technically, i only needed to have 15 logged hours in total, which i had barely managed to do at the end of first semester, but in all honesty i really just wanted to challenge myself to make the game playable for senior exhibition night. my grade kinda became secondary since i had already received it, and i actually ended up finishing the project with 36 logged hours :P

Its kinda sucks when you realize that you have to work in the same damn work for all your life (if you wanna stability in your misery life). And you will not even able to buy a home or appartment due of crazy prices. And even IF you will drive away from parrents you still will suffer from minimal paydays and constant savings for "bad day" when you have to buy food, pay for services and pay the rent just to prove that you wanna to exist and not stray on streets like a homeless. The most idiotic thing about growing up is when you realize that in the future you will be run over by a train with all the responsibilities and discipline, so you stress a lot more often, and procrastinate until the very last moment because you don't want to work and convert your mental and physical health for a couple of miserable money. I have no idea why KZbin recommends it to me when I'm trying to sort out my own cockroaches in my head
