Surprised there wasn't a mention of Your Only Move Is HUSTLE when talking about Mega Knockdown. It's also a turn based fighter, however it's not on real time, instead, each player picks there option (in which they are shown a small animation showing how it would theoretically play out) and once both pick one, the continue on until one's hp drops to zero. It then replays the fight at full speed showing the crazy combos that had just happened. Also, it has a workshop with costume characters. Anywho, my biggest picks from this vid are Kings of Hell, Aero GPX, Varvarion, One Shot Fighter, Fumes, Nightshift Galaxy, Project Turbo Blast and Geno Kids

Fun fact: the one guy developing VARVARION is Junya C. Motomura, a technical artists who works at (with?) ArcSystemWorks. I'm not 100% if he's still an employee, or freelance currently. His credit listings go as recently as DNF DUEL, which released in 2022. Good stuff! 🔥👍

I want indie games to succeed and surpass triple a games but my issue with many of them is that they choose style over substance. Indie games should really focus on their gameplay over how they look.

“Style over substance” is a mute criticism because a visual audio medium’s visuals and audio are a core part of it identity, it’s mood, and the ideas it conveys (watch “aesthetic is narrative” video by digibro it’s really damn good)
