I didn't make it explicit in the video, but I thought it showed a lot of insightfulness and maturity from Kevin Constantine to put Makarov/Larionov/Garpenlov/Ozolinsh/Norton together, and trust them with playing their own decidedly un-Constantinely hockey. For a first-year coach to be open to their style of play working despite how much it clashed with its own, I thought that was an A+ move. I mean, how many times have we heard of coaches and players having irreparable friction due to clashing coaching/playing styles?
@gabrielarrigo15257 ай бұрын
The best ones usually do. Joel Quennville was always tolerant of Patrick Kane doing his thing. Scotty Bowman let Lemieux do whatever he wanted so long as he was producing. Good coaches get teams to buy into their system. Great coaches mold their systems to the shape of the team they’re coaching. In the latter case, the buy-in becomes difficult to discern from the players just going out and playing.
@chevelle17 ай бұрын
@@gabrielarrigo1525fair point, but speaking of Scotty Bowman, he went to Detroit and set his mandate on turning the Wings from an offensive centered team, to the best defensive team in the league. Play a little less pretty, and a little more gritty.This is from Steve Yzerman himself. It turned into 3 Cups under Bowman. Everyone had to adapt, all the way up to Yzerman himself, blocking shots and playing on the PK.

What’s also incredibly painful in that game 6 between the Sharks and the Leafs is that shortly after Garpenlov hit the crossbar, Sandis Ozolinsh had a perfectly clear view right in the slot to shoot the puck on a 3-on-2 rush, but instead of shooting it, he inexplicably decided to pass it to Larionov at the side of the net who was in no position to shoot. If Ozolinsh had just shot the puck, he would’ve scored and the Sharks would’ve advanced to the WCF.

Those 1994 and 1995 teams and upsets of Detroit and Calgary were so memorable and moments that really got the franchise on the map early in their history. However, looking back, it really felt like lightning in a bottle before reality set in, and they had to really build themselves up as a solid, perennial playoff team in the Sutter years. The 2003-04 season had a bit of a similar feel. There was no more Nolan and Selanne. They picked up lesser known guys like Alyn McCauley and Wayne Primeau. They won 1 out of 1st 10 games before finding their groove in late Nov eventually earning the 2 seed and going to the WCF. Honestly, to this day, I feel like that Sharks team played better together as a team than in any other season so far. Excellent video. I was wondering if you were able to find footage of that G6 OT in Toronto of the Sharks having a 2 on 1 and being broken up after the puck carrier decided to pass. I've heard over the years that if he shot instead of passed, they might have won that game. I never saw it, and I'd like to see what happened

@dcfog814 ай бұрын
@INDLIS What I meant was they earned 1st round upsets beating Detroit in 1994 and then Calgary in 1995. That 1995 schellacking vs Detroit in the 2nd round is what Dan Rusnowsky referred to as the tennis series since the Sharks lost 6-0, 6-2, 6-2, 6-2. I remember KTVU, the Fox affiliate in the Bay, didn't even show G1 because they had to show the Cardinals vs Giants game instead handing it off to Sports Channel Pacific and would show their own tape delayed broadcast later in the day (so terrible). I had no idea the live feed was on SC until I was flipping channels. By then Detroit had already scored their 4th or 5th goal.

@INDLIS No, G1 was on a Sunday and was nationally televised on Fox. Hence, KTVU was in charge of bringing the game to the Bay Area. They were notorious for prioritizing their commitments to carry the Giants over the nationally televised NHL games. The ones I remember: 1995 Sharks vs Detroit G1 as mentioned, 1995 SCF G4 (they cut out right after the game so they could show Giants vs Dodgers instead of the Cup celebration by NJ), and they showed Giants vs Arizona instead of Wayne Gretzky's last game in 1999.

While this is the greatest turnaround, the 2008 Flyers are definitely up there as well. They finished dead last the year prior and traded away Peter Forsberg during that year, which also saw Ken Hitchcock getting fired and Bobby Clarke resigning. Bringing in Jason Smith and making him captain was seen as laughable back then (as well as bringing in a lot of former Predators between the beginning of the 2006-07 season and the start of the 2007-08 season), but they ended up making it all the way to the conference Final in 2008, which was legit a big shocker, despite being a formidable opponent just 2 years prior. Sharks were never really my favorite team but I remember this year's team well. Irbe with his ugly ass hencoop helmet and the Soviets were always fun to watch. Irbe was basically a poor man's Dominik Hasek but way more of a vibe goalie. If he was in the zone he could shut out anyone, but when he was having a bad spell he was pretty painful to watch. Not so fun fact: Jaroslav Otevrel, the guy who put an end to the losing streak by scoring two goals moved to play in Finland after his short NHL career and got paralyzed after a freak accident where he collided head first with an opponents knee.
