I've also been planning on talking about this. With how the market has grown, its important to remain humble and remember all the goofs we made made when we were more inexperience in collecting. Some other mistakes I can think of is 1) overzealous buying, 2) mishandling cards and damaging cards on accident, 3) missing out on deals due to fear or reluctance.

I’m constantly scouting eBay, for Pokémon cards, 24/7, it’s basically how I make my living (buying and selling) the best bet is to always research even if you have no interest in the card or item. If something comes up and you have no idea what it’s worth, check out sold listing, so you have a reference for the future if that card or item comes up again at a really good price, you don’t have to waste time doing research and have the chance of the item selling before you have the chance to research it. It’s probably my number 1 tip. Know your prices, understand how the market is moving. Always stay up to date on prices for hot items!

Something I learned from buying anything off of eBay is that, if the item you’re interested in is listed at a “buy it now”, you can “make an offer”when given the opportunity. I’ve taken advantage of that feature, and been able to purchase cards for $20, $30, $40, $50 off of the asking price. People are generally willing to negotiate

Great video. Some of my mistakes - (1) feeling pressured to buy without full info - sometimes this is a big mistake and yet sometimes its a real surprise / bounty. An example may be that you suddenly see this card pop up at a real great value but the pics are shoddy - many times pics are shoddy for a reason (dishonest seller), but sometimes it is genuinely an issue with a seller having a bad camera or having very poor marketing knowledge, (2) Not buying something because you are too focused on the haggling and losing context of the big picture (ex: a seller was selling the entire POP 5 for asking $3000, and it included the Espeon and Umbreon gold stars in great condition) - I was so focused on haggling that I lost context and someone else picked it up, (3) Shipping expensive cards without purchasing insurance - learned a hard lesson with 2 tracked, shadowless Chars just dropping off the radar, (4) Grading cards that are not popular - it may have a great price per publicly available sold price info, but the sales cycle is huge, (5) Selling cards on "buy now" instead of auctioning - especially high quality, but low demand cards, (6) Selling PSA 10 cards instead of holding them for longer terms .... So many opportunities to learn and do better.

I spent over 10K in a short period of time in both modern and wotc but primarily modern. Convinced myself early enough that prices can not hold at this pace after watching channels like this. Sold off everything in auctions. Took maybe 1-2 losses but primarily made good profit on the sealed product. Broke even on a few. Made double on a few. To date I only open modern to open with my son for fun. I have 2 wotc cards left and will come back after the big dip.

Man, that supplies mistake is so true. I wanted matching sleeves but that process was a lot harder than it should have been. First you buy penny sleeves, but they don’t fit into binders well, nor do cards fit well in them. Then you buy matte sleeves only to discover that the holos don’t sparkle. After that, you find fitted sleeves and re-sleeve everything. There’s even more to it because fitted sleeves still have an open end and you consider double-sleeving only to want to send the card to psa and you’re back to penny sleeves, lol.

I bought one of those PSA 10 "red's pikachu" for $40.. Most "experienced" guys in the hobby would call it a mistake because theres like 1800 PSA 10s blah blah. I bought it because I wanted it and liked the card. I even named my character the OG "red" when I played Red on the gameboy. There are NO mistakes if you buy something you have an internal interest to own. As you always say, Buy what makes you feel good and you'll never regret a single purchase in this hobby. Lastly, you said it in your video.. The bulk you purchased was a learning experience.. Doesn't sound like a net loss transaction to me ;) P.S. Ultrapro stopped making those fake leather feeling binders.. They must have changed manufacturers/materials. I have 4 of them and a bunch of the new "leather padded" ones. They suck.

For me my old binder collections I prefer them damaged or not in pristine condition. Cause for me if they are in pristine I rather have them graded. Idk why but to me it feels like I am doing a disservice to the cards if I put them in a binder if they are in such good condition.

I know the feeling. I have been taking some of the chase cards out of my binders that are in 8-9 quality and grading them because the prices have gone up so much and then replacing them with 6-7. I don't like having cards in lower then 6 condition myself. But to each their own for sure.

Love the content. Thanks for sharing. To add to this video my experience & thoughts. (1) Buy within your budget: I think alot of people go crazy and buy non-stop and when they don't need it. In hindsight I definitely bought things I didn't need. (2) Do your homework: I think it helps to know who to buy from. There are plenty of youtube and forums out there on how to spot fake pokemon cards, fake booster boxes, and what are reliable sources. So do the homework because knowledge is power. (3) Don't fall into fallacy trap: People will say "I don't know how much longer this booster box or card will be available so I will buy it at a high price before it sells out." This is simply not true. Think about it. 20-years later and we have PLENTY of unlimited base set sealed booster box. There is ABSOLUTELY no reason to spend 10,000 dollars on it when it sold for 3,000 last year. People are driving the price up because of the "bubble" and some people need the xtra cash because of the COVID pandemic. But no reason to purchase 10,000 box simply because of the idea "it will sell out." Trust me when I say this, no one knows how many WOTC printed these boxes. The fact that plenty of these boxes are still in circulation means you can get it--depending on the price you are willing to pay. But don't do it because of the notion it will sell out. Ebay has PLENTY of listings and so do collector stores. Now, I am not saying don't spend 10,000 dollars on it if you have that cash and you want it--I am simply saying dont do it BECAUSE of the idea it will sell out. (4) Have fun: If buying and selling becomes laborious or if you start to hate it--then I will say you probably are doing it for the wrong reasons. Pokemon cards are just that. And I get it because I am collector first and value the art but at end of day, my PSA 10 blastoise first ed, shadowless will NOT have liquidity. So I buy it for my own collection and looking at it. So do the things that make you have fun (5) Be respectful: This one is probably more of a vent from me. I see some youtubers ripping cards or throwing it. Nothing bothers me more. Even if it is a common card, don't forget there are kids out there who cannot afford one blister pack. I know this because I was once that kid. So don't do it. Respect the cards and art and dont trash around even the common ones.

A piece of advice for any new collectors, if you are interested in a card just watch it and wait. Tons of times the sellers will want to get rid of the cards and will make you offers even if there is no best offer option. If they do that make a note of it and when that items sale time is almost up message the vendor with your own offer.

They are generally okay, but some people have had issues with them overstating card quality and or not shipping your card very safely. A lot of people have had good experiences with them as well though, so I guess not a sure thing but not terrible. Generally buying directly from a trusted seller on ebay is a good choice. Ebay can also be very quick just search the card you want and go by lowest option. Check it against recent sold listings to make sure you are getting a fair price. TCG player can be a good place as well to determine what the raw card is selling for. Best of luck on your search!

I think there is an inconsistency with grading which is the problem. For example I sent in about 30 cards got them pre-screened by Ludkins, which they tell you all the flaws they find on the card and tell you what grade they expect you to get for each one. Of course it's not 100% accurate, it's just their best guess. Either way the cards that came back with just off center issues even if it was a tiny bit off center, none got a 10. Other than a slight off center there was nothing wrong with them. That's from me looking at them prior, Ludkins looking at them and then me looking at them again after grading. In some cases a card that was just off center even came back as an 8. The majority of the cards that came back as 10's were Japanese full arts, and Japanese cards from the WOTC era. However I have seen 10's out there that are just as off center as the ones I got back, and even with a little issues like slight silvering, or white specs on the back. So perhaps the grader looking at my cards was a bit more harsh than another grader? None of them came back with the OC qualifier. That's just my experience so far with sending stuff in for grading. Of course everyone is going to have different experiences. What are your thoughts on CGC Card Grading? Storage is certainly expensive, I know I have overspent on storage. Nothing sitting around I am not using. But yeah I bought a bunch of binders and I also like the binders with that leather feel and harder cover. I went to BCW Pro-Folio TX binders. I love these.

I think a good tip for people starting out is to not rush to build a collection , when i first started I over brought which sometimes would lead to me over paying or buying things without doing enough research which caused me all sort of problems and losses. This connects to another tip which is always research what your buying and dont buy out of you knowledge range , so for example if you have more money than most but are still new to collecting dont just jump in buying a £2000 card without researching into pop count ect ect ect. I feel like people feel very rushed starting out to catch up or dont want to miss out on things they have seen other people buying. i think people should really be taking it slow when starting out so there able to buy cards they actually want to be buying and can collect for enjoyment and not just buying simply for an investment or to make profits it also lets them build up there knowledge so they know what is worth what and just gain more knowledge in general about the market and stuff and it also allows them to find what they personally enjoy . i feel like doing this leads to natural profits as what you enjoy other people are bound to as well its what keeps this community alive people who simply enjoy owning the cards weather its becuase of the artwork , pokemon ect. (rushed typing this so many mistakes but i hope its readable , also typed before i watched the video so i hope you didnt already say this lol ) also would love to see the video of what sleeves ect you use

Big mistake in Pokemon Card collecting and investing is FOMO....there are so many cards that werent selling pre covid, I was simply buying these slowly or buying them if they popped up in auction so i could get the card 10% cheaper....some of these cards are now 5-10 times the value...i refuse to believe the demand has increased 5 to 10 times....rather the supply has been temporarily cut off. One thing to help the case of the prices holding though is those genuinly rare cards such as neo cards with low pops, dark magnetons, jungle snorlax, various gold stars will definetly hold or drop by much smaller amounts. I have real concerns for people who are paying crazy prices for psa 9 dark charizards, unlimited base, jungle and fossil which was easily acquirable for long periods of time and it is only due to the hold up with psa the prices have been driven high, further compounded by people believing its the value increasing thus making the increase even higher! I brought the entire set of team rocket 1st edition psa 9 1 year ago in auction for less then what the dark charizard on its own goes for at todays prices, that isnt sustainable and the demand/supply doesnt swing that fast, it never has in 20 years of Pokemon Cards. So in summary, 1 mistake is to panic buy believing the value will only ever go up so its ok to buy at any price.

@@bustascammer5514 I lost faith in humanity after i saw a couple of his streams. It's because we have such an unethical seller like him in the Pokemon community and people who are THAT stupid to buy. If those people were to look around, they could buy almost everything of half the price or even 1/3 of what he's selling.

Hey Nancy you may remember me you may not but why go on this crusade against tcc? I don’t buy from him either but the people who do purchase from him see the prices and click buy anyway, if they don’t want to do their research then they pay for it, it’s their money at the end of the day

What do u people think is it a mistake to buy with these highly spiked prices? Just coming into this hobby and seen spikes on other games would say -50% is possible especially on most spiked stuff. Unloading this _never before seen amount_ of graded cards from PSA markets probably take hit.
@pokenomics4 жыл бұрын
I think it is likely that some of the new supply from PSA hitting the market soon will lower the prices. But nobody knows this for sure.

What is your opinion of mtg investing? Could u see yourself to collect mtg in some point? If not, what does it not interesting?
@pokenomics4 жыл бұрын
I just didn't collect it when I was a kid. Raffi does collect some MTG and likes it. I like it to and could possibly collect some of it some day if I ever feel finished with my pokemon collection. But for now all my budgeting money goes to pokemon cause I still have so much left I want to own.

Definitely true, pokemon card price is innacurate at times. Always got to compare it to sold listings using flipper tools.
