Durante la storia, ci sono stati molti scambi culturali e migratori tra la Sicilia e la Spagna, soprattutto quando la Sicilia era sotto il dominio di potenze come gli Aragonesi, che avevano anche territori in Spagna. Inoltre, i nomi di luoghi che diventano cognomi non sono rari in Italia, e spesso indicano l'origine geografica di un antenato o il luogo da cui una famiglia proveniva originariamente. Potrebbe essere che un mio antenato provenisse dalla città di Barcellona o che avesse legami significativi con quel luogo, al punto da adottarlo come cognome.
